This is a really old thread, but since I actually own the series and movie I felt I had to comment! I absolutly love this series, and though there is the Tarot cards, as everyone else said that is redeemed by the end when she refuses to tell fortunes.
*SPOILER!*The one thing that really bothered me about Escaflowne was Dornik, who turned out to be Isaac Newton, the christian scientist who 'discovered' gravity. Needless to say, I was a little ticked that of all the scientists from earth they had to pick a Christian one. But I got over it.*END SPOILER*
