To add to that, the vague background: an ancient race of people has the ability to create worlds by Writing them in books. Then people can go into these worlds. You, an unnamed person that supposedly is your actual self, is sucked into one of these worlds, and from there you try to figure out what's going on and unravel the mysteries of the world (you don't even know what I told you here, at first).

The puzzles are complex and vary, from basic logic to things that require you to think in very abstract ways. All of these puzzles are logical problems (how to make a steam-generator power a door, for example), not contrived ones (as in most platformers and adventure games). There is no fighting (though there are some ways you can get killed). I'll also add that the worlds are often creative, exotic and the graphics are beautiful (nearly life-like at times).

Overall, however, I'd say it isn't your kind of game.

What I can't believe is how Myst has been totally forgotten by 'modern' gamers. (Have I said this before?) Myst III and IV - not to mention RealMyst and Uru - came out with practically *no* fanfare or advertising, and I don't know how many times I've had to explain what Myst was to a gamer friend.

Just a travesty. There's nothing out there like Myst, and everyone should play it, gamer or no.

Man, you guys are making me want to play Riven again. >.>
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share

And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence.

Riven was a genious game. Just the amount of intellegence needed to play that game... the fact i beat it (though over a span of 3 years!) made me feel smart! ^^

The whole style of Myst definately created a new genre. Many similar games have come out, but none can compare to the storyline, the music, and the beauty of Myst. I srsly love it.

I have adopted aitrus and ti'ana as my great godparents and katran and atrus as my godparents. I love them!

Oh by the by... after the MYST: the book of Marrim, there is supposedly going to be a fifth book. *loves the books*

Riven in the total darkness with no distractions and with high-quality headphones is an experience, indeed.

I can't say that I played it in that manner, but I have long held that if virtual reality is ever created, the first game made definitely needs to a Myst remake or a sequel to it. Most games (such as platformers) you have no real incentive to play in virtual reality, but not only would it make Myst a great deal more life-like, it would allow for much more complex puzzles.

Good point. Myst in VR would be just a little bit more appealing than Halo 2 in VR.
