What Myst games are there and what are your favorites?

So far the series consists of:
Myst
Riven
Myst III

There is a developmental title in the works tentatively titled Guru. The information regarding this, however, is several months old.

Personally, I enjoyed all three games to a certain extent. I disliked Myst III much more than the original games (the team was changed), and of the other two I found Riven the most enjoyable.

Actually Uru I think is technically considered part of the Myst series, though the on-line version flopped and won't be continued I guess.

The new one is being made by the same team that did Exile (Myst 3)... didn't think that Exile was a bad game, and the improvements to the game system (360 deg. viewing nodes) was a nice touch.

Riven was the hardest of the them so far, Myst comes in 2nd I think with Exile being the easiest (though maybe that's just my progression as a gamer).

Interestingly, I did not find them so. I feel that it has a great deal to do with playing styles. Exile annoyed me heavily and, unlike the others, I quickly grew bored and never finished legitimately. Riven, on the other hand, I beat in two weeks without help. I think the type of thinking it required was simply one that worked for me.

I have Myst and Riven, only one of which I've beaten. My game refuses to cooperate on the final puzzle (even with the guidebook, so I know I'm not screwing up) in Riven, so I've never been able to beat it after 5 or so years. Myst was actually probalby my favorite. I didn't like the wharks of Riven and I always had a creepy feeling when playing it.

I've only played the first one in the series, and I thought it was pretty good for the time it was made. Years ago, just before the game was released, I remember watching a documentary on TV in which the two brothers that created and worked on Myst were talking about its development process, and somewhere along the way they claimed to be Christian. (Just thought you'd find that interesting. ^_^ )

I really liked Exile. Possibly because it was easy enough without being too easy. I beat it about two weeks after buying it and it was the only Myst game I beat without outside help. However, it lacked the larger, more nonlinear feel that Riven had, opting more for the "separate ages" formula of the first one. But it did have Brad Dourif as the main villain. He's so good at playing those weird, socially-defunct, creepy guy roles.

BTW, if you haven't read them, I highly recommend the 3 novels that where written on the series. The 1st book takes you up to the start of Myst, the 2nd book actually shows where Atris comes from, and the 3rd book fills in between Riven and Exile.

Yeah, the books are pretty good. They help explain things one might have questions about when playing through the games. Even though The Book of Atrus came out first though, for the sake of chronological order I suggest reading The Book of Ti'ana first. They're really hard to find, though. The Book of Atrus is out of print and you'd be lucky if you found the other two in a bookstore. I also read something about a pending fourth book (The Book of Marrim?) but I don't know when that would come out.

I'm selling one of them on Ebay. ^^; No, but seriously, I looked into the books and they sounded really interesting, I just haven't had a chance to read them. I did start the book of Ti'Ana, and that was reallllly good.

I've heard about a game called Real Myst. What's that one? BTW, for me the orig. Myst was incredibly easy, Riven is incredibly hard, and Exile is pretty easy too...

Real Myst is basically the original Myst game with day-and-night phases and an extra Age.

It also has 360 degree viewing capability at each node, correct?

If you know, does the day/night pattern effect gameplay? Also, what is the additional Age and how does it factor into the plot?

RealMyst is the original Myst game done with FPS technology.... they added a new age too to give it something completely new. They also added weather and whatnot to the game.... I played the demo a while ago, and I own the game (though I've never loaded it here and I think my sister has it right now).

Game looks pretty cool, almost as good as the rendered images from years before.

The games are amazing. I love the style, the art, the music, and especially the story! I love the books! The 4th book is coming out soon and i can't wait!

Myst IV and V? I didn't realize they were that far yet (unless you're talking about speculative games). Does "End of Ages" imply a possible end to the Myst series? Also, who are the people in charge of the last two games, those who did Myst and Riven, or those who did Myst III?

MYST V: End of Ages, is the last game in the series. It came out last week, September the 20th.

Book 4 is MYST: The Book of Marrim

Hopefully it will come out soon. The Special Edition of MYST V comes with a short three-and-a-half page long preview of the book. I am really excited!

UC, i am not sure, but i believe that MYST V is done by the original team. Myst IV was done by another team entirely... but it has gotten rave reviews, and in owning it i can see that it is an excellent game!

I've played Myst, Riven, Myst III, and Myst IV. Beat Myst 1 wth the help of a strategy guide cause I don't own that one. Riven I beat with the help of a strategy guide, but recently I went back through and did the game without any help whatsoever. Myst III I beat without any help... It feels really good to beat these games without the use of a guide, btw

. I sporadically am working on Myst IV, no guide.

You *are* behind the curve. IV came out a while back. Unfortunately, it's on DVDROM only and therefore I cannot play it.

I found the first Myst impossibly easy,
Riven a bit harder,
and Exile impossibly difficult. (Still haven't beaten it.)

Can someone point me to some help for Exile?

I thought Myst set a good standard for the series, and I beat it mostly by myself, though there was at least one instance where I got annoyed and cheated (getting out of the mechanical age, I believe).

Riven I beat entirely on my own, and that felt nice. I found it challenging, but the intellectually-stimulating kind, not the type of challenge where you're ticked off and have no idea what to do.

Exile I thought was the easiest so far (which is why I find your post highly interesting, Godly Paladin). All the puzzles were relatively straightforward and didn't require as much thinking, but I played it on a computer with poor resolution and a slow processor, so it annoyed me very much.

The others, as I have previously mentioned, I have not played.

I like Myst and Riven a lot even though I've never finished either of them. (They used to crash our systems something awful.)
