Zilch's Open-Source Compendium of Rules for Online Play

Postby Zilch » Mon Aug 08, 2005 7:17 am

Well, I've been scooting around the online aspect of gaming for quite a little bit, so I figured I might as well give my two cents on the DOs and DON'Ts of online gaming. 'Course, feel free to fill in any spots miss, since I'm only covering FPS', not MMORPGs. <sarcasm>You freaks can get that after this</sarcasm> : P

The FPS Rules

1: Watch your butt, or you WILL die. Make sure you always check behind you every once in a awhile.
2: Learn the courses inside and out. This'll help immensely in planning your next move on your feet.
3: Smack talk in moderation. It's part of the game until you lose your temper and explode at someone, so just remember there's real people behind those voices that are annoying you.
4: For heaven's sake, don't teabag, dip, or do anything on people's heads after you kill them. That's just nasty.
5: Don't hog power weapons. That's just n00bish.
6: When you're about to die, drop a grenade. Many times, you can take someone down with you.
7: Avoid the curse of smack-talking before you frag someone. It's just going to give them ammo and reason to laugh at you.
8: Screaming isn't funny. It never has been, it never will be. It's just a reason for your teammates to kill you...which IS funny.
9: If you're under 15, don't play mature games. You're just gonna learn lots of new words, or end up annoying people when you don't have anyone on your friends list.
10: Don't get so competetive that it's not fun for you. Play some unranked stuff with your friends and chill out. Everyone hates overcompetative people.
Uh-oh! Your sig have started to move! -- MOES.

11: Don't be mean to people on your own team. Encouragement goes a long way, a lot longer than being told to hide or quit by your own team member.

12: Learn the mechanics on your own time. Explore the game offline before you ever play online. Questions like "How does the sniper rifle work" are things that you could have figured out easily by reading the documentation or simply trying things out on your own.

13: If it's a team game, obey your leader. If you just go off and do your own thing and ignore the team leader's instructions, you become a liability to the team.

I've been a member of a multigaming clan for 2 years.:eyeroll: We've had professional private servers for every game we've played, minus MMO's, we have a website built from scratch, an online store, a yearly get together. That's your opinion I for one take pride in that.

16. Don't Complain-If someone beats you, accept it; better still, try to learn from it. If you think someone is cheating, just leave the game and report them.

And here are a few for MMO's...

1.DO Join a Clan-joining a clan makes it a lot easier to find reliable people with which to quest. You might find deals on items that you wouldn't see in the auction house, and you will definitely benefit from knowing people with all of the tradeskills/professions/abilities available in the game. It's all about community.

2.Don't be a Ganking Fool-For those that don't know "ganking" is the practice of a high level player killing much weaker players in order to cause grief or amusement. This is just lame. We know that your lv.60 character can kill a lv.25...whoop-de-do! If you're going to do pvp, have the courage to challenge people of equal strength.

3.Take it Slow-Many players have a tendency to try to play at top speed when in groups, which can easily lead to reckless, foolish mistakes. Nobody wants to die, even if it means that you have to be a little more cautious.

4.Take Initiative-If you see that the group leader is incompetent, try to help him/her out. If it means taking over the group, so be it. Once again, nobody wants to die. In fact...

5.Nobody Wants to Die-Dying comes with varying penalties in most MMO's. It could be anthing from simply losing time, to losing experience and items. Add to that the fact that monsters respawn, meaning that if you die it might not be possible to complete a quest. In order to avoid dying protect healers, fully exploit your own skills, and don't be afraid to run if the tide turns against you.

Melee is fun- and if done correctly, can be extremely useful. I once beat several strangers on Halo 2 simply by hiding next to a doorway and waiting for them to walk by, at which point I would hop out, melee them to death, then laugh as these guys jumped from their seats and started cussing at me (I really did this at Six Flags; they had a bunch of games set up you could play there).

CAMPING IS FOR LOSERS

Don't be a chicken. Only camp if you have the sniper, and don't do that all the time. It's cheap, and highly annoying.

Corollary to above rule: When in a moderate to large-sized team game it is acceptable for 1 or 2 players to be full-time snipers, providing cover-fire and long-range crisis control for the rest of the team. Having clearly defined, specialized roles for team members is just good strategy.

Don't Cheat Cheating takes away from the fun of online gaming for everyone but you. Also, it can get you banned. Nothing good comes of this.

If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. Japanese text boxes can be fun- but be careful when you use them. Some people might actually be Japanese.

I don't mind snipers in a strategy situation, but people that camp for the fun of it ... it's just not cool.

I used to think that camping was stupid. But I've learned that it's actually a pretty legit and effective tactic at times. I don't mean when people sit in one spot the whole game. That's just stupid on their part and it actually works to your advantage nine times out of ten. But using certain weapons like a sniper rifle, melee weapon, etc. and moving to different corners around hotspots can help you get the drop on your enemy.

Don't be a noob and complain about auto-snipers or awpers: You just aren't good enough to face against them. They are not cheap, you just aren't any good in the game.

Amen brotha, amen. FPSes allow you to do the freedom of using whatever tactic you want to... like in CS... the point is to be realistic, so chooe your tactic, and those who complain about you camping are just noobs who want to kill you... They have to earn their kill

Which is why games with random respawn points make things a bit more interesting.
