Ok, the following spoiler is my theory:

[SPOILER] What we know is, that each GF is contained inside a ring. Squall`s ring that I think was passed through his family indeed contains griever. He gave the ring to Rinoa for keeps. She grows up and is blinded by evil because Squall dies and isn`t there to help her. She combines time and has to fight her past self while Squall is still alive. She has desires of killing Squall anyways by unleashing the spirit inside his ring. Squall almost dies, rinoa saves him and changes the past, End of Story. [/SPOILER]

I might get to viewing what Myoti linked us to. i just don`t have the time now.

Off Topic: I made these drawings where HomeStarunner is dressed up as every popular FF character, even BLK Mage. It`s hilarious. Sephiroth came out messed up.

OR, it could be,

[spoiler]Rinoa/Ultemecia did the whole time-compression just so that she could see Squall again. Perhaps she used GFs so much she could only retain a fragment of her memory of Squall and wanted to see him more than anything. Did you also notice that when Ultemcia is in her final form and close to death, she starts spouting some things that sound similair to what Squall says earlier in the game? "We all die alone. You can never hold on to the people you love." I thought that was a little telling.[/spoiler]

Regardless of its validity, it's a fun theory to play around with. And that's what fanfiction is for!

OFF Topic: Yeah, i`ve written a couple fanfics for FF8. I`ve said this many times before, i have a hilarious fanfic called Cid Highwind Show wchich is a comedy with every FF character in it..

On Topic; Good theory Mike, unless you dislike that title. We may never know the true answer unless they do make a sequel.

BTW: There was a sequel planned but it was going to have the same style as FFX-2 and have Seifer, Fujin, and Rajin play as the main character. It was cancelled.

I want to see Seifer in FFX`s graphics!

I actually found Fuujin quite intriguing, and the trio was amusing.

^ Yes but they knew it would be less popualr than FFX-2 was. I used to talk to someone that worked with Square from time to time, and she told me that Square is trying as hard as they can to figure out some way to make a sequel to FF8 but can`t think of a good storyline.

How about Rinoa becomes evil and Squall has to fight her? That would be dramatic.
