Nintendo Revolution Controller Reveiled! Are they joking?

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

Postby Kawaiikneko » Fri Sep 16, 2005 2:34 pm

I could go into the whole console wars junk, but my family ends up buying them all in the end so that would be pointless. XD;; I'm still iffy on this controller though. Its definitely different, and I'm kinda O.o;; on if they can pull it off or not. But then again, remember how much everyone hated the original xbox controllers? Its still selling.

I heard there was going to be attachments for the controller? If that's true, this is how you read it: $$$

IGN wrote:The Big N has developed a conventional controller shell that, according to executives, looks more like a Wave Bird. The "pointer" remote can be inserted into this shell so that more traditional games can be enjoyed as they always have. Obviously, it will be this shell that enables players to experience Super NES and N64 games on the platform. The even better news is that because the sensory functionality of the device remains operational even when it's in the shell, games like Madden could actually be expanded. Imagine, for instance, having access to all of the controls of a standard controller plus 3D movement options. Icon passing just got a whole lot easier.

Console war over. Revolution=Very yes.

Well, I hear that Revolution will have a port for a regular Gamecube controller, so I guess it shouldn't be too bad. I'll still get one.

The more I read the worse it looks... First off the revolution isnt going to have the best graphics out of the bunch and now this????? i mean come on this is sad, only a select few are acctually going to like this any. just think though of how much pain this shall inflict upon your hands after a long time of play and like the remote i see it getting lost...quite...often....(searches for the remote)

I read the article and on ign and the yahoo article and all it seems is that there was a metriod alpha (dare i say pre alpha?) and a bunch of bad graphics tech demos... i was kind of excited about a touch screen controller (if it had a analog nub i would have been fine but this...this is nowhere near what good is)

I actually expected something like this.

...I had a lot of faith in the Revolution until now. >_>

You, and everyone else who thinks this way never had faith to begin with if you weren't expecting the N to come out with something "whacked".

Yes, it looks wierd, yet cool at the same time. Still, I feel there's something we don't know, which can be a good thing (though the waiting does tend to be aggravating). As said before, things could still change. No one really has the right to judge until it officially comes out.

I'm still getting one, for more reason than I can count.

The more I read the worse it looks... First off the revolution isnt going to have the best graphics out of the bunch and now this?????

My GOSH, how much more graphical power do you want?!
The GC already had very good capibilities as it is. The N said they were more interested in gameplay, not graphics, and if you're one of those who likes games just for how it looks, you were'nt a true gamer to begin with.

good i guarentee you one of those games would have excellent gameplay (mgs no doubt but its looking good) i mean god of war (though it has to much gore for me) looks great and it is fun. you can have BOTH and the way the market is you NEED both.

To another extent i am in fear of playing a fps or sword game i know im going to get hit in the head by a wayward nunchuku (as they have now been named no less by the nintendo rep) (iwatu or what is his name?)

Well, whatever Desperado. :/

Being that I plan on getting into the gaming industry, this actually does solve alot of problems in gameplay. Say you have had a character that does hand-to-hand combat, but also uses "energy-like" shots to attack. The analog can be used for main movement while the controller itself would be used for attacking as well as aiming your "energy" attacks. "Lock-in" problems can be easily bypassed this way (as long as they're done correctly).

might be, and i guess i could say im passing it off already before trying it. i am just from the school of "it should have a controller or at least a keyboard" i mean yeah but seriously you got to consider whats going to be better in the end? a normal controller or a this. i cant even say that and i am going into the bussiness to. going to the best college in my state for it next year *shrug*

Uh... The new controller is very awesome and everything...

But, for ports and things like that, Nintendo is making a "classic style" controller for the Revolution as well.

The controller is supposed to open new doors while keeping the old one's open.

I actually am not surprised by this, just slightly disappointed from my own vantange point as a person with a TERRIBLE attention span who has difficulty keeping up with those wireless wavy mouse thingies and sword arcade games that bear a strong resemblance to this controller. Now go ahead and accuse me of passing it up before I've tried it, but I know PERSONALLY that I am going to have a difficult time playing with an apparatus like this due to prior experience. It's just like how I'm not too keen on the XBox because I have trouble using the controller with my tiny hands. Does that mean I'm completely going to blow Nintendo off? Not necessarily - I may try the traditional controller if they allow that to be an alternative for the newer games.

Bottom line: I'm not necessarily disappointed by how "whacked" the controller is, but I do think that it may be a poor move for Nintendo, since there are people out there who just can't manage a controller of the nature, alienating customers who may have initially been very loyal Nintendo fans.

Oh, man, I love this already! For all the naysayers, watch the Gamespot video and watch the demo. For anyone who grew up loving Nintendo, this should make you fall in love again. When that girl in the demo started flipping her controller up and I heard the quintessential Mario jump sound, I was hooked. I laughed and clapped in glee.

*sniff* Nintendo, you have revived my love for video games!

And I can't wait to play Zelda and swordfight for real. And I thought the whole Zelda concept was getting old... You know that they're gonna let you swordfight as Link.

I will buy the Revolution, and I will preorder it the second I find out preorders have begun. The other consoles are officially off my list.

*sniff* I love Nintendo oh-so-much!

well even though we already know there is going to be a classic controller, here is an article about it

"Eurogamer: How is the controller going to work with games that aren't designed specifically for the Revolution - multi-platform titles and so on?

Jim Merrick: We're producing a classic-style expansion controller, based on traditional designs like the Gamecube controller. It's like a shell with a hole in the top into which you slot the freehand-style controller, and then you can play third-party ported games, and retro Nintendo games you've downloaded.

So there's that option - but even while it's inserted into the classic-style shell, the freehand controller will still be able to sense positioning and so on, so there are more options too.

It's something that's just as true for the DS - not every game uses the DS's unique features. But some multi-platform titles do, like The Sims 2 for example. We hope other developers will do the same and look at ways their multi-platform titles can make use of the Revolution's features. "

When I first saw these pictures, I have to say that I was skeptical; however, I don't think that I would put it past Nintendo to release something like this.

Waving a wand to jump? Swordfighting in Zelda? That's not even innovative...that's the PS2's Eyetoy turned into a controller.

The ironic thing is that they could release a system with a controller that looks like a remote control, and consider not allowing it to play dvd's (if they take their gameplay-only philosophy in the same direction as the GC).

Perhaps Nintendo's strategy in the next generation will be to include a button in their remote-controller that turns off other systems...or crushes them in your garage door...or let's you channel surf through tv shows in which desperate gamers express their love for the SNES and NES. The possibilites are truly endless.

As for FPS games, what do they plan to do? Try to convince companies to make Turok games again? Steal back Perfect Dark from the XBox 360?

Seriously, Nintendo. You're making it waayyyy too easy for me to bash the Revolution with this lame controller design.

Well now it just looks like they can't make up their mind on the design. Having the remote inside the controller would be even more cumbersome than holding it in the hand.

cbwing is right this really isn't as innovative as everyone's saying it is. The Eyetoy does the same and you don't need to hold a dang thing. Albeit it does it in smaller less complicated games, but it's there. But I can just picture someone holding their arms straight out like that for more than an hour, tiring. And about the analog "nunchuck" deal, that chord from the pics can't be more than a foot long. I can just see myself, a person with long arms, making an exagerated movement and ripping the analog controller right out of my hand. Good thing they're having a traditional controller as well though.

Will it be that bad? Probably not...this isn't the 90's anymore. The serious contenders are here to stay, the big three have learned from their mistakes, and they can't afford to make dumb decisions anymore. It will probably work pretty good in the end, but until I see someone actually playing a game with it I'll be sitting on the fence.

Ok. The add on for making it a regular controller with motion sencing abilities just relieved all my fears. Now this is something that is good. Now, I will be buying a revolution, with no doubts in my mind. While that is a mock up of what IGN thinks it may be, I like the idea.

Exactly. As soon as soon as I heard about this controller, I bound every action in Halo to it and still had buttons left over. For example...
Joystick Peripheral: Movement
Z1: Change Weapons
Z2: Action
Remote Pointing: Aim/Look
Remote Downwards: Crouch
Flip Remote Upwards: Jump
Remove Forwards/Backwards: Zoom in/Zoom out
B Trigger: Shoot
A Button: Grenade
Anything else could be put on the D-Pad, and start and select are still available.
EDIT: For your information, CBWing, the new Tom Clancy game is already scheduled for Rev, and if nothing else, they'll have 3rd arty FPSes and Metroid.

Still innovative, by being in your hand and much more able then the Eyetoy. No to mention, you’ll look less crazy playing it. Anyway, thinking about it a little more, I am absolutely with Nintendo on this controller change. Just watch, after this generation Sony and Microsoft will be adopting the feature in future controllers. Nintendo may not be the leader in power, but at least they are there in the industry to throw a curve ball… keeping Sony and Microsoft on their toes ……and away from being stagnant by just relying on marketing. More so for Microsoft, because when Sony is at the top they do perform.
As for FPS games, what do they plan to do? Try to convince companies to make Turok games again? Steal back Perfect Dark from the X-Box 360?

Nintendo taking a chance by appealing to smaller game makers. You know, a company like Double-Fine (Pyshonuats) or Free Radical (Timesplitters). It’s a risk that can pay off. Lot’s of developers at GDC went on a rant at the price, predicting their own doom.
Seriously, Nintendo. You're making it waayyyy too easy for me to bash the Revolution with this lame controller design.

Yeah, it looks crazy, but the dual-analog is barely able way of translating the PC mouse/keyboard precision to the console world. Even the PC mouse/keyboard has it’s limits, so this seems to be the best marriage of the two. If this set-up is as intuitive as I have read, Nintendo didn’t name it Revolution for nothing. If Starcraft 2 *actually* comes out, it be will possible to successfully port it to the Revolution (free online play and all).

at first i had my doubts with the controller, then found out about the analogue sticke etc. and realise that it would work. it would feel weird, but i think the new control system could well work better than traditional controllers, though ultimately we won't kow until we try it out on some games, when i saw it i was like "how the heck are ya supposed to play games on a remote control?" but with the plug-in stick, which comes in the standard controller package accordong to miytamoto (i think thats his name?) and fot the people who aint a fan, you can get the addon (for extra cash of course) to plug in a more standard controller into the revolution.

Exactly, Shia. Nintendo said they were aiming not only for the hardcore gamers (like Micro$oft and Sony are), but to bring back those who have barely played since the NES days. It lets you relive that nostalgia and helps the casual gamer to get into it without having to memorize a bajillion different button combinations.
Microsoft and Sony can brag about their consoles playing movies, going online, and playing music. That's all well and nice, but they've lost the sense of what gaming is: entertainment. The Revolution is a player for fivedifferent systems, and it the option for playing DVDs is a very smart move. The other two can already do this, but it jacks the price way up, and why would you buy an extra DVD player if you already happen to have one (though I'll definetly get this feature for convinience ).

The only problem is something they'll most likey fix upon release (remember that this probably isn't the final version). They either need to add a couple more buttons or move the "a" and "b" buttons farther up. In more complex games, those would probably be needed, and it'd be agravating to have move your thumb so far down.
Other than that, it's actually something I expected. When I heard about it playing games, I wondered how they would make it work for functions such as the NES Zapper and the SNES Super Scope, and this got rid of all my fears.

If this set-up is as intuitive as I have read, Nintendo didn’t name it Revolution for nothing.

Exactly. Sony's original wireless controllers and the Eye Toy didn't feel that inituative to me, but we I got ahold of the Wavebird, I was shocked. I had used wireless before and was skeptical about it, but Nintendo did an incredibly good job with it (I'll admit to having run around the room and getting in every odd position I could just to test it out).
If this controller is as good as the Wavebird, we're in for a serious treat.

Imagine: Jedi Knight 3... Using the remote to guide your lightsaber. YOU deflect the laser shots, YOU fight with the lightsaber.

That is going to rock.

but I much prefer the old fashioned method of using a standard controller

Nintendo took hits with the SNES... Whats this? 6 buttons!? what happened to 2!?
Then the N64... "Huh an analogue stick? That's going to get broken easily, Nintendo suck for this."

Then rumble paks.
Then analogue buttons (L and R on GC controller)

Everything Nintendo do is innovative and up until now it has always worked with a few exceptions.

Nintendo has Metroid as their own FPS. Time Splitters has also been on it. If FPS games will work well with this, u can be certain they will get more. With the online capability of Revolution, it will definitely be sweet (hopes for Counter Strike!)

Overall: I like this idea. It has potential, I want to play it now...

Oh and it has 4 slots for Gamecube controllers. So games could be compatible for both...
I am the Reaper of Souls... and it's harvest time.
