what's is Gaia, exactly. I hear about it a lot, both positively and negatively, but I don't know what it is. : \

Gaia is a message board with interactive avatars basically, you get 'gaia gold' from viewing pages and such on the message board which you can put towards clothes and accessories for your avatar (which you design, choosing from hair style, eye style, male, female, hair color, eye color, skin color). You have to look pretty hard for a decent topic mainly, and it takes forever to save up gold. It's overrun with immature people, but there are just as many that are actually worth talking to. I've found that as long as I stay away from the 'chatterbox' section (Which is overrun with stupid topics such as 'lick me if you think my avatar is cute' type discussions) I can manage to actually have a lot of fun. There's always the Gaia shops to browse through to look at stuff you can buy for your avatar.

Yes. I am (though by technicality) a member of Go Gaia. During my time there I posted almost exclusively in the ED forums, specifically M&R.

However, after the avatar system's coolness had faded and I had tested out my apologetical skills against die-hard atheists, the forums lost some of their appeal to me. The Christians there, though some of them were intelligent and thoughtful, almost entirely struck me as arrogant and needlessly vicious.

I see you're a Hellsing fan. While I recognize the first Alucard, where is the picture of Alucard and Integra from?

I used to hang out in ED too, but after I got the outfit I wanted for my avatar, the viciousness in that place really started to get to me. both the Christians AND the non-Christians were hateful. and the rest of the boards were so inane that I decided to leave.

I really should give away my gold and stuff one of these days. anyone want it? XD

edit: never mind, apparently they've nuked my account. :shady: and I had 5000 gold too...

Hmm... well, it sounds like something that I shouldn't go and explore. The avatar dressing sounds entertaining, but I don't think it would hold my attention for long. But thanks for telling.

Well, they do have hundreds upon hundreds of different wearable items, and millions of possible combinations. And in an inane sort of way, I was vaguely motivated to get a decent outfit.

I used to hang out around Gaia a lot - I didn't really get much out of it aside from the avatar dress-up system. Meh, I mainly hung out around the charity and the writer's forum and as UC said, tested out some apologetics, but in the end the appeal just doesn't last. ^^;

It looked interesting to me at first, but I had most of the same reservations about it that everyone's already expressed. It seems to me like a glorified message board more than any sort of actual fun *game*, and playing dress-up with a cute 'lil avatar is absolutely not worth wading through the intellectual mire on that site. If the posts aren't absolutely, mind-numbingly inane, the halfway intelligent people are total jerks. I commend anyone with the fortitude to actually enjoy that place...I for one cannot browse it for more than 5 minutes without wanting to commit hara-kiri with a spork.

It is developing into more of a game, though, with more towns and greater options. If they would just have stats and the ability to battle each other, I think the board's popularity would skyrocket. I know I would become slightly more interested, though it would be annoying to lose to the people who have nothing better to do but post in the Chatterbox 50 times a day...

My other problem with it is that the moderators don't seem to care much about what goes on. Gaia is -supposed- to be PG-13, but in some forums it's really more like NC-17. XP Places like that make me grateful for places like this.

Also, their servers go down a lot. o_<

I have many not so fond memories of screaming at my computer when Gaia's severs went down for the 6th time in the day. I always had to change the server name so I could browse without getting any weird errors.

Likewise, the moderators annoyed me. Particularly those in ED, some of whom could be extremely prejudiced and had no concept of balance.... Basically, however, the boards have no moderators. No one could keep up with the sheer volume of posts there.

This discussion actually made me interested in the boards again... but they've been down the two times I've attempted to log on again. Unfortunate.

I spent one obsessive day on Gaia trying to make the coolest avatar ever, but then I realized that actual meaningful discussions were few and far between on the forums. It just doesn't seem to have a sense of community, though maybe I've been spoiled by the CAA.

I was only on for a day though, I might not have given it a fair enough shot.

I just ignore them and only go there when I am bored. I used to post in the boards a lot, but now just some. I mean it is a secular environment, and even some of the Christians there are quick to judge just because an adult on the group (I would think that many of the admins and mods are adults, go figure). I think the main reason I stay there is to find some friends in Arizona, and other Christian anime fans. They do have some new stuff in their real life shop though, such as this interesting hat previously only available on gaia avatars, and probably was a donation item. There is other stuff, but I think that is the best thing so far. Maybe they will sell fox ears with a wire instead of a furry band, so guys that want to cosplay as their characters don't have to wear those headbands that look like they got ripped off a stuffed animal. I will never cosplay as my character until I can get or create artificial fox ears that look real.

im not, but sakura's wings is on there. i looked through it, read some of the posts and threads and such and thought a lot of the people sounded ready to argue (in an immature way, rather than debating a topic maturely). so i didnt join. but the avatar creating part sounded kinda cool.

I'm a Gaian. I usually just go on there to rp or go on the art freebies to draw some random avatar. I can survive it. It's probably because I'm not in there looking for serious discussion.
I went into an Inuyasha thread and felt like laughing and crying. There are so many illiterate n00bs there, that I don't hold any type of expectation for conversation.
The so-called literates are huge elitist punks and I haven't made any new freinds there. (Then again I haven't tried)
I'm not a fan of being pmed by random people when I haven't posted in a month. And for some reason, people keep begging me for gold.
I've been there for a long while though. April 2003, methinks? It's an on and off thing really.
For some reason I go back. I like it, though. Maybe I'm just easily amused.

Oh, and as a show of my uncreativity, my username there is RubyJewelStone too.
