Remember the Sword!

Postby Hephzibah » Mon Jul 25, 2005 9:42 pm

Hey all! This is a thread where we get together to memorise the Bible, our Sword.

In kid's church, kids are often encouraged to learn verses but when they grow up and start attending regular preaching there is hardly any push to remember not only new verses but also to keep the old verses in their hearts.

We at Prayer Guardians have discussed this, and thought that a thread where we all get together and commit to memorising Scripture will help each of us not only memorise the Word, but also to help us be an encouragement to others as well as to be prepared for any spiritual attacks that come our way. Afterall, its not exactly a good thing to be in a battle without a weapon handy!

Ephesians 6:17 - Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Anyway, basically what will happen is that a weekly verse shall be set, and those interested in participating will memorise the verse. If you have trouble remembering things, then Rogie_san's suggestion might be helpful to you:

rogie_san wrote: I would recommend writing the verse down each day until you've got it memorized. Start up a daily journal where you write the verse of the week down and then write an entry about your day, maybe even addressing it to God.

I want to encourage those that do join this to not only remember the verses, but to also think about them and try to apply them to your lives. A sword isn't much use if you don't use it :P

EDIT:
Here is the list of verses we have learned so far:

WEEK 1
PSALM 119:11 (NIV) -
I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.

WEEK 2
James 4:7-8 (NKJ)
7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners]

WEEK 3 + 4
[I]1 Peter 5:5-6
Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,
"God opposes the proud
but gives grace to the humble."
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.

WEEK 5 - 10
Psalm 1:1-5
Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers

But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers.

Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

WEEK 11
Philippians 4:6
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

WEEK 12
Phillippians 1:9-10
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ

WEEK 13
2 Timothy 2:20-21
In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.

I like that. Very quoteable indeed. One can spend an afternoon memorizing a verse, but a whole lifetime learning just what it means and putting into practice, yes? At least, that's essentially what my Hebrews teacher told me last semester. I think he's so right.

Anyhow, I'm excited that the thread is up!! Yay!

Creatureart; signing in. I'm all subscribed and ready to start the memorising. I think meditating on it - writing about the verse and different aspects of it in a journal could work well for me, too. I'm going to write it on my arm now before I go to bed so I don't forget. :)

Good to see you, Syreth. Thanks for putting this thread up, Talame. God bless.

Ahh excellent, this thread has been created.

Actually, I've been working on reading through Psalms recently so this is good. ^^

PSALM 119:11 (NIV)
I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.

I'm recopying this in my post since it helps to see the verse over and over again in order to memorize it. Anyone who posts next is welcomed to do the same.

i like the verse from heb 4:12 12For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
I used to "Follow" Him because i had to....now i would give everything to follow Him.

PSALM 119:11
I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.

XD Great idea Mave btw

I like how the name ties in, Swordguy. :thumb: . I'm also going to take the idea to put the verse when I post, Mave.

Good news - I've managed to pretty much remember this scripture now! It just clicked really quickly. Praise the Lord - I usually dont remember things that easily. :) .

Hey all! well, a week has gone... I hope you guys managed to remember that verse alright (btw nicely done CA  I'm glad it was relatively easy for you)

Okedokey... the new verse this week is:
James 4:7-8 (NKJ)
7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

(just as an aside, the title for this little section of the Bible is "Humility Cures Worldliness"... just thought you'd like to know ;) )

Also, I will always (if I remember too :P ) put up which version of the Bible the verse comes from. You dont have to learn this version if you don't want to.

Well, have fun memorising this one ladies and gents :)

That's nice!
I'll start memorizing...
God has a plan for each of us
He wants us to fullfill
And He'll provide the strength we need
To carry out His will.

God bless.. :jump:

Once again, I've written it on my arm to look at during the day. All I have to do is pull up my sleeve and inspect the blue writing on it! Very useful. ^_^. Thanks for picking such a good verse to memorise!

I tend to write on myself to remember things, too. ^_^

I also have the theory that if you write something on a post it note then stick it to your forehead you wont have to work too much to remind yourself of something - people will just come up, look quizzically at you, and read out what you're trying to remember.

Whoa - you didnt? Oh well, its a good verse. Thanks to whoever I missed that did choose it :)

ooooo... connections! Yeah, Israel is an example to us, yeah? Both a good and a bad example. Good in its beginnings of obedience and faith, bad in its reocccurring idolatry. Most of us don't have kids yet, but we have to take this commandment in Deuteronomy to heart in order to raise up a generation that follows the Lord. I think that memorizing verses ourselves is the first necessary step, yes?

:wow!: Whoa. That's so cool! Very, very interesting Mave. ^_^ . Thanks for posting that.

I agree, Syreth. Memorising verses is so incredibly valuable. God so uses them, especially in times of testing and trial! The idea (and command? I'm not sure. I think it is, but does anyone know for sure that it is commanded in scripture to memorise God's word?) also right through his Word of memorising his words and hiding it in our hearts, such as Psalm 119:11, which we started with.

well Me be back from a long restless adventure..a.nd about to leave on another...but that is one of my favorite verses...just ask a few people you don't know that know me :p any way i love the 7-10 part not jsut to nine.

7Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

i don;'t know it jsut seems that right there is shows us how we need to come before God. Alot of people get confused about 9, i mean arn't we suposed to be happy. well if you think aobut it how many times do you laugh when you are really sad...or show a happy face when down? God doesn't want that...HE doesn't want a mask...He wants you...what you are feeling now...not what you think He wants to see you feeling. also to quote a good friend of mine..."When you cry infront of someone you are showing them your true self." He wants you...to know you...for you to humble yourself before Him. then it is not us who lifts us up...but God HImslef that picks us up

sorry about the ramble you jsut hit a sweet spot for me...james...love the book and this verse is one of my favorites.

Waah!
*runs away*

Anyway, silliness kinda aside, I was thinking that perhaps I will continually edit the first post in this thread so that all the verses we memorise will be kept up there. That way if you forget one and want to refresh your memory, you don't have to go through tonnes of pages to find the verse. What do you guys think?

James 4:7-8

XD I would have put all that part down, but I thoguht it might be too much for people to learn in one week. I was planning to do something on humility next time... not sure if it will be that verse, but it just might be.

i don;'t know it jsut seems that right there is shows us how we need to come before God. I think the whole grieving and mourning thing was because he was reminding them that they were still continuing to sin and being double minded. God doesn't want us to be always sad and solemn in His presence. He's our daddy afterall! Yes, there are times we have to be sad and repentant, just like you would to your earthly dad, but there are also times to laugh and rejoice for who He is and what He has done in your life!
