PDA doodles

Postby shooraijin » Sun Nov 16, 2003 5:54 pm

I hope I'm not too abnormal to admit that I practise character sketching in my Palm m505 during staff meetings and noon conferences. (Patients? What are those?) It's low resolution and in one colour, but it really helps with pen-and-paper abilities. Anyone else a PDA sketcher, even if it's :shady: Pocket PC?

The dark hash marks are for proportion, btw. I liked how this one came out, so I'm using it as a model.

Hey, that's cool! ^^ Interesting proportion system...

Is it a character of yours or just a random person you drew?

Random. I actually haven't been able to get much character art done recently

Hey cool! It must be tough to draw with that teeny pen. Like, trying to do okekaki with a toothpic - in b&w. Staff meetings, huh? Is that anything like drawing in Algebra II class? ;)

It's hard to do the drawing, but it's good training for pen and paper, and actually the lo-res is kind of forgiving about fine details. Here's another one.

Hey, she's pretty cute! You did an excellent job on the eyes. Quite detailed considering the media you're using.

Actually, it IS pretty detailed...I don't know how small the surface area on the PDA is, but it's got to be a lot harder than what I'm used to...O.o

She does have pretty eyes...^^

In some ways it's easier, like using a light pen. I have a Graphire2 tablet for my Mac, and I'm still getting used to it, whereas here I can just draw on the screen :) (Part of the problem is not having a good, easily visible cursor in Photoshop to track the pen position. I'm getting used to Painter Classic instead.)

I have a light pen for my Commodore 64, which is the same kind of interface (and, ironically, 320x200 so it's nearly the same kind of lo-res issues), so I wanted to get one for the Mac, but light pens just aren't made in large quantities anymore (let alone for the Macintosh). There's a Cintiq LCD monitor-and-pen package that Wacom makes, but I don't like the colour fidelity of most LCD screens enough yet ... and it was mega-expensive. :(

It's not too bad. I only lost all the notes from two conferences I went to, all my contacts, three chapters of a book I'm writing, six poems, 4 songs and an odd picture of you eating breakfast. (Had camera attachment on). But other than that there really isn't any reason to sync your palm...

Aww, she's cute! I like the hair a lot. And using the guidelines for the face shape paid off nicely. There's big steps of improvement between each one you post, so just think what the next one will look like. ;)

Working on profiles and 3/4 view. I'm not as happy with this one, but it's a decent effort, I guess.

> draw some stuff on paper!

Yes, but the whole point of PDA doodles is they're portable, they don't waste paper and lazy butt me doesn't have to scan them in

Yes, I'd say very decent. :thumb: Something you may want to try next time (this is the pot calling the kettle black, btw, because I often fail to do this) is scale down the eye that is farthest from you a little more, taking the perspective into account. You did the eye shape itself very nicely, but you might want to make it a teeny bit smaller next time. Other than that, keep 'em coming!
