Birth Dates: I thought myself into a problem

Postby Shao Feng-Li » Wed Jul 20, 2005 12:48 pm

I thought up a delima for myself. I was born December 4th at 9:56 PM. THat means, in New York my birth happend at December 5 12:56 AM. So that would mean my birthday is now December 5th, since I live out here, right? Then I celebrate it on the 5th?

Sounds silly, I know. Maybe even stupid, but...

No the 4th. Go by what time zone you where born in whether you moved or not. Just because you skip a few time zone doesn't take the fact away you were born at 9:56 pm where you were at.

if you're born on Feb. 29, on non leapyears you count your Bday as March 1, because Feb 29 and Mar 1 are the same number of days away from the new year.

*nodnod* That makes sense; you don't suddenly become three hours younger simply by moving across a few time zones, right? ^_^ (Slightly off topic: If that were possible, I bet more people would try it. )

Well, a birthdate is to measure exactly how old YOU are. Technically maybe you should be moving the time and even date of your celebration around if you want to be accurate.

But just keep the birthdate the same.

I was born at 2:10 in the morning, but I'm not gonna wake my family up to celebrate then, ya know? ^^;

It's not like birthdays NEED to be completely accurate in that situation with the timezones. Store away the info for your amusement, though. =p

Nope, Destroyer. I didn't end up moving north. Instead we moved 2700 miles East to New York.

So if it's December 5 12:56 AM in New York, that means It's December 4th 9:56 PM in Caifornia. THat meansa my birthday in New York is DEcember 5th 12:56. ...

Your birthday is the same regardless of your techincal location time-wise. If you lived near the international date-line, you could celebrate your birthday, cross the date-line, and celebrate it again. ^^

I actually think that's a great idea.

Interesting conundrum, to be sure. To actually honor the moment of your birth, it does indeed change with the time zones. When you were born, it was just before 1:00 AM on December 5 in New York. That is the anniversary of your birth, then.

I’d hate for the government to start tracking it that way, though.

So if you were born on Mercury and then moved to Earth you'd be able to celebrate your birthday more than once each earth year because one year is the time it takes for a planet to move around it's star once. Mercury takes less time to travel round the sun than earth. In fact you'd celebrate your birthday about four times per earth year. If i was born on Mercury id be about 86 years old now. Oh and if i was born on pluto id be about 0.09 years old. So I'd be about 32 days old now if i was born on pluto. This could get complicated if we ever colonise other planets.

You're assuming 365 (24 hour) days in a plutonian year.

One day on Pluto is 153 hours and one year has 14,182 days. So, you are actually 1276 days old by the Pluto calender.

Let's see... if I were born on Pluto and my age was 17 by Pluto years I'd be 4216 years ond in Earth Years.
But since I'm 17 in Earth years I am 0.0685 years old in Pluto years.... o.O

Anyway, I'd just go with the day you've always celebrated your birthday, it just makes it easier that way. Unless you want to get technical (which I usually do. Don't know why I don't now) there's not much of a reason to change it.

Thanks for correcting my mistake temyt.

No matter how you look at it the number of houurs old i am doesnt change. The number of years and days however, depends on the planet. Anyway, Volt is correct. You dont automatically get an hour younger or older by traveling to another timezone or circling the planet would make you 24 hours younger or older depending on which way you went. I can see the advertisements already. Want to get younger? Travel around the world with us and you'll get younger automatically or for those who want to get older you can do that as well. Travel with us!
