I'm going to be disappointed if geekiness is now trendy. That would stink. *sulks in the corner*

I'm a geek, and i beat all the quote "popular girls" unquote in the run for senior class president. And the election was basically a popularity contest since we had no form of campaigning, they wouldnt let us make a speech or anything.

Who cares if it's trendy? The trend will change in a year or so. (A few months maybe?) Stick with what you love, whether it's popular or not.

Is there anything that people won't make into a trend?

The answer: no. As long as people are wiling to pay money for shirts that say "geek pride," the trend will continue.

What you say you are is not as important as how you act. Just be yourself without being ashamed of it and without throwing it in people's faces. That is the meaning of cool.

There is a sort of 'anti-cool' trend going on, but most of the people involved in it don't even really understand the meaning of irony.

I do love geeks.

I don't know about anyone else, but I've always had a violent, visceral reaction to "trendy." When Jars of Clay was trendy, I refused to listen to them because everyone else was (which was a shame as it turned out I actually did, in fact, think it was good music).

I suppose extremes in either direction are equally deleterious.

Being anti-trendy is just another way of getting sucked in and following the trends. And then there's the issue of denial and double-think. (Thank you George Orwell!) Plus, you end up being deprived of things you honestly enjoy. Like Jars of Clay.

I call them 'goth lemmings'. (No offense to goths. I just noticed the tendency among some of the younger goth kids when I was in high school.)

And no offense intended to anybody. I did the same 'anti-trend' thing when I was really young. Everyone at school hated my guts, so my defense mechanism was to automatically go against anything they endorsed.

Oooh, anti-trend. o.o I used to do that a lot - I guess it comes from being picked on when I was in elementary and middle school. ^^; If you can't join them, beat them. Or something like that.

Anyways...o_O It's trendy to be a dork now? Am I the only one that's a bit confused by that? Granted, I guess it's nice for people who have complexes about their interests not being popular (no offence to anyone who does. ^^; ) but I've always been comfortable in my own skin...so to me this is really weird and confusing to hear.

Perhaps nerdiness will be less trendy once people discover the antisocialism, obscure trends and crippling inter and intrapersonal struggles that come with being one.

I don't think I could ever be classified as "nerd". I was never into sci-fi or fantasy, though I did have a brief obsession with Holy Grail. I don't like Star Trek and was never a computer whiz. I guess I was more of a crybaby, but since both receive the scorn of stronger men, what difference does it make?

In my life time, I was call both a dork and geek. I said stupid things, I did stupid things. Also, I was made fun of most my life because I had Alopecia areata. That only added to the insults. To be honest, no I'm not happy or proud of it. I would have given almost anything for people not to call me those things and joke behind my back (even infront). What sane person wants to be made fun of everyday? Who wants to feel crummy? Not me. How does that make you feel good? Words really do hurt.

Not until junior year did my problems with being social social fade away. I started to be just in the middle. I hung out with people from every social group and I could care less what people thought.

So perhaps some may celebrate being that way, but deep down I doubt many of them like to be made fun of on a regular basis.

(edit)Also, from what I've seen. Most of the people who wear those kind of shirts tend to be the already labeled "cool" kids anyways. So it seems kind of self defeating.(/edit)

Whatever category people want to be in, whatever. As long as your a good person, it doesn't matter to me.

I tend to shy away from things that get too popular, too.

I have no idea and little interest in whether I'm cool or not. I suspect I'm at least a Nerd, most likely a goober, but probably not a dork. But, I'll let you guys figure it out for me. After all, labels such as "cool" and "dork" are applied to people by other people. You're not cool because you think you are. You'll cool because other people think you are.

Therefore, such labels applied to me are for other people's benefit, not mine. So I don't have anything to do with them.

But seriously have you noticed that as soon as something becomes really
cool and trendy it starts to loose whatever made it really cool?

care what others think if what I like is cool or dorky.

It's easy to be reactionary.

I don't think I'm a cool person, but I'm not sure I'm a geek, either. I thought that required a special kind of smartness. But whatever.

I find trends rather ridiculous. I've never been "cool" and I have no such desire. It's such a hollow pursuit. I won't even wear designer clothing unless I get it for free or cheap. (I once found a really nice "Guess" shirt for 4 bucks... I thought it sucked that it said "Guess" on it, but I wore it anyway.)

I'm afraid I'm rather guilty of always trying to be different and against the current trends. But it never occured to me that I was actually giving them a great deal of power by trying to go against them. But it makes a great deal of sense. Wow..that's a thinker..

I think from now on, I'm going to try and be oblivious to trends, as hard as it may be. I'll simply try to like what I like, without thinking about it too much.
