Agreed. Here at VBS we have the simplist of songs. At church, we have the more complex stuff.

I believe you should listen to whatever you want as long as it doesnt negatively influence you too much.

not to sound critical but it seems to me that people who listen to these emo/punk bands act a lot more depressed. Like my sister, used to be so upbeat. Then randomly she starts listening to good charlotte, linkin park, something corperate etc and now she acts like everythings against her.

On a christian level I don't believe music should have a negative influence on your relationship with god. Thats just what I think ;P

That's like saying someone who listens to hardcore (ie me) isn't as strong a christian as someone who only listens to contempory music. (i'm talking christian music only here...since that's really all I listen to)

A band like Haste The Day...a truely hardcore band is extremely devoted to God. All the stories I hear backstage...about them spreading God's word to non-christian bands.

Your relationship with God and your musicial tastes don't change depending on how close you are to God...nor does maturity. Who's to say someone who listens to contemp. is anymore mature than the regular old metalhead?

well ja... Listening to songs about sex or killing people for fun is definitly filling your mind with crap, which is why I was quickly repelled by genres such as rap (which are chock full of those themes) when I was introduced to it. Also, there's entire generes of music that praise Satanic things (such as... uh... Satanic Metal maybe) that we as Christians must not listen to.

There's nothing wrong with any true genre of music. God created our minds to be able to enjoy melodic sounds, and wired each person with different tastes. Sure, we all have our likes and hates about different genres, but to say that classical/metal/rock/blues/etc is sinful just because of how it runs is a mistake.

I agree with that. Filling your mind with those things on a daily basis are eventually gonna effect you..even if you think you are immune (hah!)
As I grew closer to God...I found I didn't WANT to listen to secular music anymore...not even the stuff that didn't have bad meaning to it...it feels empty. I'd rather listen to something by Killswitch Engage or Haste the Day over any secular band..no matter how soft or hard the music is...something with MEANING...something that feeds me.

I think that each indevidual should decide what music is eddifying and which is not. Trying to impose ones views on music on other people generall ends with problems.

I have given my opinion on this so many times, I have it down to one line. Judge music the same way you judge the films you watch, TV, and magazines you read. If you segregate yourself from nonChristian music...to avoid hypocricy...do the same with music. Btw, moved to Jam Session.

It is ultimately between you and God. If you are convicted about listening to a certain music type, don't do it.
