Anyone else like the 1994-1998 era of gaming? For some reason, I find these rough polygons attractive. : P Anyway, I'm tlaking stuff like Diablo, Quake II, Half-Life, you know, the oldies-but-goodies.

We had a network match of MacQuake going a month back. That was classic goodness.

I also enjoy Doom Legacy, although the original Doom pixeliciousness is somehow appealing.

And I'm a huge fan of Shogo. Hey, Hyperion, fix MacShogo so it works in Classic!

Then there's all those NeoGeo games.

Heh, last week I was playing through Half-Life. Good times, however I just wish I could bump up the quality of the sound more. Anyway, I could go on forever with the games from that time period, but I’ll just stick to PC. Well, more specifically, Real-Time Strategy. (For now)

Anyone here an old school C&C fan (I can't remember)? While the original Command and Conquer and Dune will always a be memorable experience for me, Red Alert will always be one of my favorites in the series. It just improved the original on pretty much every level. Especially, on the multiplayer side.

As we know, Star Craft was the hot RTS a couple of years later, but there was an over looked RTS game that was even better than either. Sure, Star Craft had an amazing story (for a RTS) and Red Alert provided quick and fun skirmishes, but this game provided absolutely chaotic and massive battle (if you had the computer). That game was, Total Annihilation. I'm not sure why this game never caught it big. Maybe, it was, because the game did lack personality to a degree. Still it did have one of the greatest soundtracks in PC history and an awesome up to ten-player multiplayer mode.

I'm not a fan of the polygonal PSone/N64 era games. Some of them were good, but I prefer pixely sprites to polygonal ones Long live SNES!

Since Wild ARMs is a game from 1997, I suppose I'll have to say yes.

I also enjoyed a few N64 games, like the Banjo-Kazooie games and the Kirby game.

Oh, yeah. Descent I remember well, and Total Annihalation. Seriously, I heard someone here on CAA whose name I will not mention state that the first RPG they played was Kingdom Hearts, and it nearly blew me away. Kingdom Hearts came out last... two, maybe three years ago, I guess it was. But still, it feels like yesterday.

Total Annihalation still stands in my mind as the best of the best, where RTS games are concerned; the original Unreal Tournament as my favorite shooter. Come on, I challenge you to find another RTS where base-building has such a fire-and-forget style! And then combat had everything, and I mean everything you could ask for, from Zippers to Big Bertha. I guess nukes counted in there somewhere as well. And the Commander unit's big booooom!!

Oh, man, the nostalgia... I'm gonna go blow my nose now.

Another thing I miss, although probably a bit pre this era, is SSI's awesome AD&D style. Like Bard's Tale meets a tile-based combat system. Bioware/Black Isle just couldn't do it with their RTS-style AD&D games.

The PS1/Dreamcast era was definitely one of my favorite eras in gaming history.

I loved both Starcraft and C&C: Red Alert. I also played Diablo 2, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, and Doom 2 on the PC.

On the PS1, my favorites were Street Fighter Collection (SFA 2: Gold is still one of my favorite 2d fighters of all time), Tekken 3, Brigandine (a somewhat obscure strategy-rpg), Gran Turismo, and Twisted Metal 2 (but not 3).

On the Dreamcast I played Power Stone (1&2), Spawn: In the Demon's Hand, Soul Calibur, and the incomparable Phantasy Star Online.

There were many more, so I may add to this list.

I liked DOA2 better than Soul Caliber on the DC, although the jiggle factor was a problem.

I played Crazy Taxi incessantly, though. People won't get in a car with me if I'm behind the wheel these days.

I loved Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. That game was awesome. I only hope they come out with a similar game for the 'Cube. The power-mixing aspect was AWESOME. I loved getting the double-bladed lightsaber.

Half Life is the bomb...i play it all the time. CS 1.6 is still one of my favorite games and UT is still great fun to play. I have played the original Quake and thought it was good but by far one of my favorite games from this era is StarCraft. StarCraft is one of the best RTS's ever made. The AI is excellent and the gameplay fantastic. (I think that all those games are from 94-98)
Gahh, I forgot about console games, Mario 64 is my favorite mario game of all time, and I still have fond memories of playing Goldeneye 007 at age 7.

Ah yes...Crazy Taxi. I played that quite a bit. Amazingly, I never got tired of The Offspring song ("All I Want") that they looped continuously through most of the stages.

Some other greats from the Dreamcast that I forgot last time: Capcom vs. SNK, Cannon Spike, House of the Dead 2, Record of Lodoss War, Sega Rally 2, and Slave Zero.

Although I've never used them of course ( ]heard[/i] that NesterDC, DreamSNES, DCStella, and other such homebrewed apps available for the Dreamcast are quite nice.

I have to say, that era of gaming was possibly my least favorite. But that's probably only because I am a Nintendo fan and the N64 lacked my favorite genre: role-playing games. Anyway, I have to say that The Legend of Zeldas: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, were my favorites. The graphics were amazing at the time and I loved the exploration and the plot.

Quake was great, i beat it through once on normal. Now xp doesnt run does games >_< But I remember that last boss. It took me a while to figure out what the heck that little spikey ball was! =)

How about perfect dark? This is definitely a game that should NEVER be forgotten. I have laughed to tears for hours playing this game with peeps. its very rare my friends play video games, but this one we got into for a little while.

as for half life, I just got the second one last week! the older one was great, this one of course blows it out of the water, but i'll never forget the first encounter with the military!

Yes... I am still drawn to these games in a way. I really wish i could get duke nukem, hexen, heretic, quake and all those great games working again! I could relive the glory days so to speak

Heretic was good, although Hexen had some clever innovations that really extended the life of the Doom engine (particularly the first level with the blowing leaves and moody sector lighting).

Won it on the next to hardest level, the shareware version anyway. I was having nightmares of that game afterwards. It was glorious...

You guys seem to be skipping the reminiscences of Robert and Roberta Williams' re-invention of interactive fiction: The xx Quest serieses.

King's Quest, Space Quest, and Quest for Glory. There were more, but those deserve the most mention, with QfG being their top game. So many ways to die, so few ways to win... Follow Mrs. Williams' script, and you'll be okay.

hexen was just annoying at parts though. like the double hit switches. it was fun, but heretic I felt was really cool!

those creepy laughing skeletons really freaked me out. I had nightmares about those for a while! I'd be going to sleep...

Final Fantasy 7 was made in `97. That was a GREAT game. Sorta overrated, but good.

Final Fantasy VII of course.

There are a lot of 'lost' RPG's from that era; Parasite Eve, Brave Fencer Musashi, Xenogears, Valkyrie Profile, Suikoden I & II, heck even FF8. That was the Golden Age . . . . . .

Descent was a blast. Resident Evil was great too, especially the 2nd one. Half-Life of course . . . . .

I agree. I actually prefered VIII and IX over VII. But they were all good. And someday I will finish VIII.

I loved the classic gaming era. Technically, though, I didn't discover it till it was well over.

I was the owner of a Sega Genesis through that era... but not an SNES. I just happened to play Chrono Trigger for the SNES at a friend's recommendation and found it to be the better than anything I had ever played at that point. I tried FF6 next and fell in love with it as well. After that... I was a full fledged SNES addict.

I never met a person who has heard of Chrono Trigger face-to-face so I don`t think it`s a popular game but it was a good one.

No, FF7 was my first RPG. The most dramatic storyline I saw before that was Spyro killing Gnasty Gnorc so obviously I`m bound to think it`s a heck lot better than most people. Oh wait, FF10 was my first, but I liked F7 much more. I think you guys underrate it for the most part.

FF7 is my favorite RPG of all time with FF8 coming close. 10 comes after and then the rest, aren`t FFs.
