I've been to Gencon once, in Indianapolis back in 2003 or so. It's essentially a giant convention hall full of roleplaying game and video game vendors and booths. There are anime booths, and one of the major draws is that you can sign up to play RPGs like Legend of the Five Rings with other people there. There are also various other booths (including swordsmiths, etc.), and usually a few celebrities show up (I think James Doohan, Star Trek's Scotty, was there in the mid-1990s).

Personally, I hated it, but I get jumpy in crowds, and GenCon Indy is nothing if not crowded.
To all, life thou givest, to both great and small.
In all life, thou livest, the true life of all.
We blossom and flourish as leaves on a tree
And wither and perish, but naught changeth thee.
