Building houses?! Strewth! Sounds great  Have an awesome time there Anna

I dunno, maybe someone's already mentioned this before, but as we fast, we should probably pray a blanket prayer over the people who are possessed by demons that cannot be cast out except by much prayer and fasting (the ones Jesus talked about with His disciples who failed to cast out the demon when they were commissioned to do wonders among the lost sheep of the house of Israel). I dunno, it's just something that's been on my mind lately.

That's a good idea Syreth my friend! Afterall, if its in the Bible we should pay attention to it no? :P

Btw, this is a reminder that the 1st is TOMORROW (for all Aussies and Kiwis out there) and VERY SOON (for everyone else ;) )

We will be in Kentucky way back in the mountains working with a program called S.W.A.P (Sharing With Appalachian People).

Nifty  Tell us how it went when you get back k?

Anyway, my fast was yesterday. As always, I fasted the computer and it went rather well. However, for the next fast I have a different objective that you guys might want to implement as well. The Bible often calls us to 'humble ourselves', as "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble" (James 4:6).

Lately, I've been wondering just what it means to humble yourself before God; before I just used to think that 'being humble' was basically acknowledging that you are a sinner. However, after a talk with my mum I've come to think of humbling as not only this, but also coming before God with fervent prayer and fasting. Not just "I think I'll go without the computer for a day", but honestly and passionately sacrificing something of yours, esp your time, for God and crying out to Him to wash you clean of your sins and asking His help and grace to become more like Him.

So, next fast-day and perhaps even before I am going to be trying this out, as I feel that I haven't been growing lately... if anything I've been falling away as I am not as fervent in my prayers or my fasts and I have a rather apathetic attitude towards my spiritual well-being. Anyway, if anyone else feels a similar way perhaps you should ask God if you should do this as well.

As an aside, I would like to remind everyone that one of the conditions laid on Prayer Guardians is that it's members would try to stop "I SHALL PRAY" posts. If you feel that you want to publically acknowledge your support of the person asking for prayer, then consider writing not only that, but perhaps also a small prayer along with it.

That definately sounds a lot like what God showed me in China. Not just to say prayers, but to actually pray fervently, with a humble heart before God. Not necessarily asking things from Him just because you told someone you would, but asking Him because you want it to happen and you feel that He wants it to happen. It's a discipline that's trying to be worked out in my life.

Sometimes I feel that way when I don't have enough "output" in my life, if you know what I mean. I don't know if this is true in your case, but I sure feel spiritually stagnant if I can't serve practically or minister by teaching others or reaching out to others. That usually causes me to be apathetic to my own spirituality. I'll be praying for you, sis.
My fast went well. I fasted from the internet (couldn't fast from the comp, since I work on a computer at my job).

The 1'st turned out alright. (So did the 15'th, but I didn't have time to post about it.)

I think Talame hit the nail on the head there. Fasting's not only about praying for others, it's also about using the time to seek God.

It's not really important enough for a whole topic, but I'm going to a Christian leadership camp next week, and one of the things that we're going to be doing is getting out into a park and start witnessing to people. Even though I've done it twice before (2'nd year alumni), I'm a little nervous about it. So any prayers that it turns out well would be appreciated! =)

PS: Thanks for the welcome CreatureArt! =)

When you go out to do the outreach, Lionheart, I believe that God will give you the words to say. Though can I suggest that some good preparation will be to pray and fast to God, as only He can truly change a person's heart. ;) Definitely have my prayer support matie :thumb:

Anyway, I just wanted to inform you guys of my progress; or should I say what God has been changing in my life. Over the past few weeks I've been watching a DVD series by John Bevere called "Drawing Near". It adresses such issues as humility, a true fear of the Lord, etc. I'm feeling that God is talking to me through this, esp since in my daily Bible readings I've been coming across LOTS of verses about 'fear' and drawing near to Him... Praise God! Isn't He the best?

While there is still ALOT of work for God to do in me, I am grateful that He has already begun and is in the process of creating in me a true fear of Him so that I can draw near to Him and have an intimate relationship with Jesus. Thanks for the prayer guys XD

Basically just be a good ambassador for Christ. For example; it would be hypocritical if we were to say "I'll pray for you brother" for someone struggling with porn, and then later on say "O yeah, that chick was totally hot!!!". Although this is an extreme example, we should always be on our guard as to how we behave so we do not cause anyone to lose faith.

Also, one of the conditions laid upon us by the moderators is that we try to refrain from making tiny posts in the prayer thread like "Praying" or "I'll pray for you matie! XD XD XD". One way to avoid this is by typing out a prayer in the actual post.

Anyway, I'm sure that you'll be a great Prayer Guardian mate!

Well thank you very much for giving me the oppertunity!
So who all are prayer guardians? Or am I not allowed to ask that question?

hmm... telling some one "I'll pray for you brother" for someone struggling with porn, and then later on say "O yeah, that chick was totally hot!!!"... XD ... That maybe an extreme example but it is a good one! :thumb: As Christians it is out duty to to fallow the footsteps of Jesus, “To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.â€

ARG! I am very annoyed because I just erased my entire post and have to type it all over again! *takes deep breath* Ok.

Welcome, holysoldier5000. Welcome also, c_hunter.

Our trip to Kentucky went well. We had to drive 18 hours to get up there (12 hours the first day, 6 the next), so it was great bonding time for all of us . The roads were very narrow and curvy with usually a dropoff on at least one side. In 1 1/2 miles there were 72 turns! Praise God that we got there safely!

Once there, we were divided into three teams (there was also a group from Pennsylvania there, so it was cool to connect with them). One roofed a house, another redid most of the inside of a trailer that was rotting out, and my team was building a porch and attaching underpinning to an elderly lady's trailer. Porches are an importat part of Appalachian culture. Fanny (the lady) and her daughter Elizabeth were very sweet and cooked us lunch every day. Elizabeth's husband (Richard) and their three sons helped us build some. Not judging Richard was a challenge for me. I first saw him as a fat guy without a shirt on, and a gray beard, smoking a cigarrett. He turned out to be an ok guy, though. On the last day Fanny and Elizabeth cooked us an extra big traditional Kentucky dinner: potatoes, cornbread, some sort of macaroni-and-hamburger stuff, and soup beans. Mmm, mmm was that delicious!

One girl from my youth group fainted one day. She fainted several more times and eventually we had to take her to the hospital. She was ok in the end though. A couple of other people got sick too (including me), but everyone turned out to be alright. Praise God!

It rained for a couple days durning the week, which set back our plans. One group that was supposed to work at the site for 5 days only got to work for 2 1/2. My group tried to work that day, but trying to hammer nails through a couple layers of tin in pouring rain while slipping around in the mud doesn't work very well, so we gave up at about lunch time. Dealing with that was an awesome growing opportunity!

One of my friend's week was very upsetting, though, because after this trip, she has to leave the youth group. She doesn't want to, but her parents (who aren't Christian) want her to attend a church where she has (biological) family. She is very sad.

A lot of people said that they grew a lot, were changed forever, and felt closer to God at the end of the week. That's great! Me, I didn't have emotional experiences or revelations, but I just grew in technical aspects. You know, I got to practice patience, not judging, self-sacrifice, and I learned how to use power saws !

So, yup. I had a good week. Praise God!

That's wonderful Anna Mae, I am glad it went well. I just had a similar event happen to me. Just got back from the "Creation Festival East 2005"
I got to hear a lot of really cool bands, and lot of really cool speakers. Fav speakers were...Michael Franzese, Mark Matlock, Bob Lenz, & Ron Luce. Fav bands were... Switchfoot, Casting Crowns, Newsboys, David Crowder Band, Mercy Me, Starfield, Phil Kaggy. All good stuff. I went with my good friend Donnie and his youth group (the "Teens for Christ") and we all had a really good time. The best part was evanglizing to people. Being a youth minister, I got to volenteer to help out, and they gave me the job of handing out bibles, praying for people, and helping answer their questions. We handed out on the last night over 400 bibles, and I got to pray with 50+ people. What was even cooler, was when this girl came up to me and started asking me questions about "what to do now that I am saved?" So for about an hr and a 1/2 I just sat, showed her what the bible says we are to do as Christians and just encouraged her to go out and share her faith, as well as grow in her new faith. It was just awsome...Praise the Lord. I am hoping to take my youth group there again next year...Lord willing.

Hey, it took me quite a while to build up the nerve to just go and evangelize to people. But do you want to know the secret of becoming a good Evangelist? You get up and go be a "fisher of men." Let God lead you and just go share God's love with people. Giving out 400 bibles is a rear occurrence in a person's life, but ministering to those we meet every day, by showing them compassion and kindness, is something we all can do everyday. Just get up and go! God will give you the words. Just remember to treat the person with the respect you would want to be treated with. Evangelizing has its ups and down, and sometimes it is hard, but remember that you’re doing the will of God. And when you fallow God's way, you are going the right way!

I agree with what you're saying. I believe that often we feel so pressured to go and stand up on a soapbox in a street and shout out at people to be saved that we think nothing else is 'good' enough, that we can't really reach people in any other way. While I think that would probably be cool to stand out in the streets and talk/preach to people if God calls and enables me, it isn't the only way to reach out to people.

People can get tired of getting talked 'at', of people just wanting them to get saved, but who aren't willing to be involved with them any more after that. I'm not meaning to discredit street evangelism, either - it is an awesome ministry that I am amazed and inspired by, and that God uses to save people.

I guess, in a nutshell, without discrediting any other form or ministry, what I'm trying to say is that by investing into the people around you - by helping and loving your neighbours and showing love to complete strangers - you are also reaching out.

 Long post, I know. Let me know if I made sense, or if you think I went wrong anywhere, ok? When I go and write so much on an issue, it gives me both the chance to express my views and to be corrected if I'm wrong - both of which are good things that I value. So if you hold a different view than mine, please feel free to correct/inform me. :)

You hit the point exactly. Successful evangelism is not just preaching on a soapbox, (very rarely in today’s world will anyone listen to you if you do that) but what people truly see is our actions as Christians. They see a people who are different. Who have something uniquely right with them. What is it? Well when people are good examples of Christ they become “Godâ€

I totally agree with you guys that love and investing in people's lives is the key. I would just say be careful getting in the mindset of results, cause you never know when God might want to save a few thousand people by a soapbox sermon. I guess the point is to obey God by preaching the gospel, even if no one listens (whether by a daily example of love, streetwitnessing or a soapbox sermon). Just think of what it would be like to be a prophet back in the days of Israel's idolatry and captivity. Those guys had angst that didn't mind the results, but still stayed strong by obeying God. Just some thoughts. Also, let's lift this up in prayer (evangelism in general), if we all aren't already. I know it's something I should do more. I get so caught up in my own business I forget about the far-off church sometimes and forget to pray generally as well as specifically.

Also, if you guys think of it, pray for me, cause it's too often that I'm overcome by fear and as a result, I don't preach the gospel.

Syreth wrote:Also, if you guys think of it, pray for me, cause it's too often that I'm overcome by fear and as a result, I don't preach the gospel.

I'll be praying for you.
& Syreth sharing the Gospel is nothing to be afraid of. Remember that God gives power to those who are on his side, preaching his word. It doesn’t mean that your going to win someone to Christ every time you try to tell people about Jesus, but you do plant a seed that starts to grow. And as that person starts hearing more and more about the gospel, that seed you planted is going to nag them until they answer for themselves "Is Jesus really the way to Heaven?" Every little piece of encouragement you give people to fallowing God helps. And over times those little bits add up. Sometimes it takes years, but then God works in the person's heart and they come to him. It is a wonderful thing to be a part of, the plan and working of God. So don't be afraid, go out there and share your faith...but remember to always treat the person you are trying to minister too with love and respect. Show them the love God, whether your soapbox preaching, or going one on one… Dare to fallow the example of Jesus!

Sorry guys, but I forgot to remind everyone that yesterday/today (depending on where you live) was the 15th. Being sick does strange things to your memory and thinking capacity :P Anyway, I am sorry to say that I forgot to fast as well... :(

And now... I go in search of tissues

Thanks, Anna Mae. I'm glad. :phew:

Waahhh! I forgot about the mid-month fast as well!
I'll have to make it up tomorrow. I'm sorry that you're sick, Talame. I've got the flu, too. I hate having to use so many tissues. :sigh: . I hope you feel better soon!

Syreth, HolySoldier, Talame - thanks for your wise words.
