"Most Awesomely Bad" Cover Songs

Postby rocklobster » Wed Jul 06, 2005 12:47 pm

Cover version, in case you were unaware, are songs that are new versions of older songs. What are the worst ones you've heard? Here's some of mine:
  • "To Love Somebody"--Michael Bolton (ugh)
  • "I'll Be There"--Mariah Carey (the Jackson 5 did it better)
  • "Always on My Mind"--Pet Shop Boys (Who said we needed a disco version?)
  • "Viva Las Vegas"--ZZ Top (Hey, I like ZZ Top, but why did they have to do something that doesn't even sound like them?
  • "All By Myself"--Celine Dion (Hey, Celine, the song stunk the first time!)
  • "Open Arms"--Mariah Carey (Hey Mariah, you can't sing! Deal with it!)
  • any cover by Marilyn Manson, buy especially his version of "Sweet Dreams"

Best Awesomely Bad Cover song ever: "My Sharona" by The Number 12 Looks Like You or "Head Like A Hole" by Nine Inch Nails as covered by Showbread. I'd like to have that song, actually. >_> It was really cool, done live.

Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds by William Shatner. It's so hideous it's great.

Oh, yeah, and moved to Jam Session.

4th Avenue Jones did a cover of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit at one of their concerts. >.>

YES! 'Another Brick in the Wall' was so awful! The Marilyn Manson one was pretty bad too!

All of that Aerosmith rap stuff is atrocious!

Aerosmith rap? You mean Walk This Way by Run DMC? That actually wasn't too bad, though I prefer the original.

Anyway, to hear more of the musical genius that is William Shatner, including audio clips, Amazon actually sells the whole album: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000014WS/103-5415834-0510240?v=glance

I've had "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" and a few others by Shatner on a CD with a bunch of old P.O.D. and Supertones stuff for about five years now. Yes. It's disturbing.

Hey!

You don't diss the awesomeness that is William Shatner's Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds! ;)

Had anyone ever heard Leonard Nimoy's Proud Mary? I think he had a few other interesting covers *shivers*

Aretha Franklin's take on Eleanor Rigby is kinda strange too. It's not bad, it's just kinda unrecognizable, I think her soulful style just doesn't quite suit the original mood of the song.

great... i dont know the difference between awesomely bad or badly awesome.... or awesomely awesome and badly bad!

all there is in my eyes is what i like or what i dont like.

I do know I like all the creedence remakes they've done! I put a spell on you... proud mary.... good golly miss molly.... yaaa rock on! =)

I really hate all the covers coming out now a days. Like brown eyed girl... used to be a song I enjoyed... then I heard green day do it. so much for that.

an acoustic version of ac/dc? Im glad I havent heard it, i'd personally get up and whack maroon 5 mario hammer style!

then theres boys of summer. that song was quite rockin! then ataris ruined it....blah dont listen to me i'm just babbling =)

Maroon 5...and AC/DC? And it's acoustic? I'm having such a hard time picturing that, must find the MP3!!

Another two just popped to mind, Britney's Spear's take on Satisfaction and Madonna's cover of American Pie. They aren't really bad perse, but sometimes you just shouldn't mess with the classics.

Jessica Simpson's rendition of "Take my Breath Away" is a good way to irritate me. I'm not a big fan of the original by Berlin but, my goodness, does Simpson's version suck! Its enough to make my ears bleed.

Another version that sucks is actually by one of my favourite singers: Johnny Cash. He's a very good singer but I'm afraid that his version of "Bridge over troubled water" was unfortunately pathetic. I wish it was better but it wasn't. Sigh.

Phew, for a second there I thought you were going to say something negative about Hurt, at which point I was going to have a difficult time not going on the uber rabid defensive

I think I remember hearing about that version of Bridge. I haven't actually heard it, but I can see how his voice and style might not totally mesh with that song. Yay! Another one to add to the list of bad song covers that I must find and listen to for reasons unknown to even me.

And I must agree on the Jessica Simpson front. *nods*

Devo did a version of The Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" that makes me want to cry just thinking about it.

I'm not the biggest Rolling Stones fan in the world (I'm not even a fan) but Britney Spear's "I love Rock and Roll" sucks pretty darn much. Strictly speaking her music isn't even rock.
