I do NOT like the SATS

Talk about anything in here.

I do NOT like the SATS

Postby Mr. SmartyPants » Fri Jul 01, 2005 3:23 pm

I was doing some practice SATS... right... and this question popped up... so retarded

The resturant itself was beautiful and the service was excellent, but the food was _______.

(A) superb
(B) shabby
(C) inedible
(D) delicious
(E) platable
the answer is c
although that answer doesn't make sense... i say it's shabby. Sure shabby mostly related to like furniture or clothing, but im sure youve seen a perosn on tv say "not to shabby" about someone's cooking

somone PLEASE explain to me HOW food can be inedible.... if food is inedible than it is NOT food, because food is ALWAYS edible... i mean you can cook up lasagna REALLY badly... and if it tastes bad.... IT'S STILL EDIBLE

seirously, I think some SAT questions are all like.... anti-common sense almost...

Yes, I agree. I always have to try to answer with what they want me to say, which is usually not what actually makes sense.

I'm going to be a bit pedantic here.

Mr. SmartyPants wrote:although that answer doesn't make sense... i say it's shabby

With questions like this, you are expected to choose the best answer, not just a correct answer. Both "shabby" and "inedible" fit the sentence fairly well. However, "inedible" is a word that specifically refers to food, wheras "shabby" in its literal sense is more often used to refer to things like furniture or clothing ]somone PLEASE explain to me HOW food can be inedible.... if food is inedible than it is NOT food, because food is ALWAYS edible... i mean you can cook up lasagna REALLY badly... and if it tastes bad.... IT'S STILL EDIBLE
Hyperbole. Exaggeration. It happens all the time.

Part of the trick of doing well on tests like the SAT is learning to think like the test-makers, and that is not necessarily a fair way of measuring a person's intelligence. However, it is impossible to make a test that is perfectly objective.

yes you are expected to pick the best answer... but you also need to pick the most LOGICAL answer. Yes inedible may refer to food, but if food is not edible, then it is not food. A compact disc isn't food, and it is not edible, you cannot eat walkie talkies... you CAN eat a 3 month old molding beef steak... its edible... but it would make you sick

And if such phrases like "this food is inedible" exaggerated, than it shouldn't be on the test, because its VERY misleading

It WAS the most logical answer. The statement showed words that best fit "resturaunt" and "Service"

Therefore, the word that best fits food in a negative sense (indicated by "But") was inedible, which in the first meaning I have is: "Not fit to be eaten", NOT "not able to be eaten."

Yeah... at first I was thinking "shabby," but then I thought shabby really doesn't describe food. I would most likely use it when describing a run down shack or something that looks worn down. So the next one on the list was inedible.

The thing I had the most trouble with were the analogies. I eventually got the hang of them, but if there are two words that I've never seen before, then I would have to guess.

they were testing your knowledge of the basic meanings of the words. In everyday speach, you'd be more likely to call the cooking shabby, rather than the food.

I understand Standardized testing cause I took courses on it... but I can't reviel ALL the secrets here, can I? ;)

There is a limit to what can be tested on standardized multiple choice tests. Is there a better way? Probably. No idea what though. Unfortunately, any new system would probably be treated with skepticism...

I can recall when the SAT was the test to take and ACT was an alternate one that was only accepted by some schools... or is it still that way? I took it... geez, almost 20 years ago?

I got the right answer to the question, its just a test of understanding of the englesh language. And, it is propper in the english language to call food inedable.

As for the essay on the sat, I think it is a stupid idea all together. How can you objectivly judge someones writing!? and have the scores be accurate all over the USA!? It isn't going to work! Idiots...

The most annoying question I ever had in an exam was in my software test.

Q. Copyright is a ___ issue.
1. Ethical
2. Legal
3. Social
4. None of above

Ugh, I hate standardized tests, I hate it even more when it has bad questions like that D:<

o.o Okay, so, it couldn't be "ethical" because then it would be "an ___ issue." Social doesn't really work either, so I guess it's a Legal issue. XD;;; Am I right, or are you just saying that it was an easy question?

Yous imply have to learn how to think for these tests. Honestly, as sad as it may be, standardized test are half about knowledge of subjects and half about your test taking abilities. Lame? Yes. True? Yes.

Take a prep class. They're suppose to help a lot.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

There's also the old fashioned method of pray and choose.
I.e.peek at a question then send a quick prayer and just let your pencil fall wherever. It might not work but is certainly a bit more adventuresome!

The essay freakin' sucked man! I made a 7 on it. I had been shooting for an 8, but I guess the man likes to shoot down my people's dreams, just like they shot the guy who had a dream. Sorry.
Well, I got the question at the beginning right. Inedible was actually the word that popped into my head after I was done reading the question. English has always come easy to me. I made like a 590 on that part. The math part was terrible, but if you pay me enough, I just might tell you what I got on that.
