Student in Uni of Sydney, studying Software Engineering.

I know that's not exactly a job, but if it means studying all week is all I do, it's a job.

I'm looking for a job for the coming semester break though. Hmm, where to look for one...

I would sorta like to get a job this summer, but I don't think it's gonna happen. Maybe next year...

I could say that about myself. Even before I started working for pay I would always help out with phyiscal labor tasks, mostly for the church or with family.

Before I started working at my current job I had two physical labor jobs. The first was working on a land surveying crew. Since I'm not an actual surveyor I had to do most of the grunt work, like clearing brush (which was fun, since I got to use a machete  ), carrying equipment, marking points, etc. The work itself was more tiring that it might have been, because I always had to wear long pants and heavy boots on the jobsites. Clearly not the best way to stay cool in the summer.

My second job was loading trucks in a warehouse. At night. If I had to guess (since we each got a list of the load numbers at the beginning of the night), I would say that I probably loaded an average of 600 boxes an hour. The warehouse supplied a large retail outlet, so in addition to boxes I had to load big stacks of chairs, bags of charcoal, kitty litter, tables, brooms, and anything (minus books and electronics) else that you normally find at a Wal-Mart/Target/K-Mart. The most annoying part was the hours, which were 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM; but thankfully the pay was good.

Now I have a desk job with the (federal) government. I recently had surgery, so I probably couldn't do most physical labor jobs (doctor's orders :eyeroll: ).

Eversince I landed my feet on the soils of the U.S. in 2000, I've had my share of physical labor. Oh well, I'll just detail through my previous jobs just for the fun of it.

1st job: Dishwasher in the dorm
This was pretty labor intensive since we had to wash all those foodservice trays/pots/cooking utensils as well as dinner dishes. I didn't mind the hard work but what I really hated was throwing out the leftover food. There was always a lot of food to waste and it sickened me.

2nd job: Assistant Secretary
Desk top. What a huge constrast. I spent most of my time working on distributing the mail, taking phone calls, running photocopying jobs and other random errands

3rd job: Undergraduate lab assistant
Assisted in running lab experiments with fruits and vegetables and food extrusion. Spent time doing the lab dishes, scrubbing screw extruders, measuring bulk density of extrudates, making pH buffers bla bla bla...

4th job: Product development intern
Worked on creating 8 food prototypes for the weight management product category. I loved this job since I worked with bread, crackers, powdered drinks and candy XD

After obtaining my B.S., I couldn't get a job since no company was willing to sponsor a H1 visa work permit. I was not qualified enough and a B.S. degree really didn't do any good in my case. Admittedly, it was a humbling moment and I was homeless and jobless for a month.

5th job: Grill cook
I went back to another dorm and worked at the grill from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. everyday. It was very tiring but I learnt how to make pancakes, omelettes, burgers, french toast and worked quite a bit at the deep fryer. Remind me to show you the burn scar I obtained from that.

6th job: Food Lab technician
Woohoo! Back to the Food Science department! I mostly worked in the sensory lab, running consumer taste panels and creating value added products from the state's agricultural commodities.

7th job: Graduate research assistant - Back to school!
AKA 'Graduate student' Along with studies, I had to balance out 2 major research projects. For the next 2 years, I would experience many late nights, failed experiments, conflicts with a professor and A LOT of stress. Let's just say, I currently think that this was my worst job experience.

8th job/Current: Sensory intern
This job is a major constrast with my grad school life. It's more of a desk job, and I work on coordinating/organizing tests, and writing reports. I love this job since I love working at the desk and writing reports is second nature to me. ^__^

Blimey, I've just summarized my resume. Heh. I'm sorry if I bored anyone to death XD;;;;;;;

PS: Just to make this clear, you can get a pretty good job with a bachelor's degree in Food Science if you're a U.S. citizen or have a green card. If you don't, you have to be willing to do some extra stuff.

I didn't even know about bakery clerks until I was hired as one a month ago. Is the job totally crazy for you too? We're always rushing like mad to get everything finished. And yup, ya gotta love the crazy old ladies in search of random difficult to locate baked goods

yay for bakery clerks! yeah, it is so crazy sometimes. like on payday, or something, when the baker people in the back make twice as much stuff, but you still have to get it all out in time. GAH!

yay for all those hard working, underappreciated people out there! *hugs everyone*

I work in that "Game Rush" section at Blockbuster. It's an all right job, especially seeing how it's my first. Yet, I would prefer to work at Gamestop, because most of the customers here are "entertainment clueless" middle-age folks. Lot's of funny stories there. Such as, the time when someone asked me if we had Episode III in and then proceeded to argue with me that we should have it in. >.>

Anyways, my favorite part of the job is the "Product familiarization program". Meaning: I get 20% off games and five free rental everything week. The problem is: I've already played most of the console games we have in stock, am very picky on movies, and we have to wait 21 days for a product to be on the shelf before we can get a free rental on it or purchase it 20% less.

Yeah that's why I've never applied to Blockbuster. Games are second to movies.

I've been a Veteranarian Assistant for almost a year now at a Vet Hopistal/Kennel. During the school year I was mostly in the hospital after school doing the dirty work like cleaning, taking care of the animals, and such. I occasionally assisted in appointments, surgeries, euthanizations, etc. I'm really desensitized to animal blood, guts, and all that nasty stuff now. When you've helped remove nasty tumors off of dogs it kinda happens. Now that it's summer I'm working downstairs in the kennel pretty much exclusively which means your usual grunt work. Which is ok really lots of downtime as opposed to upstairs.

I've been trying to get a second job at an EB or a Gamestop. But all the ones within 5 miles don't need anybody so it's kind of a drag... Sure it's minimum wage, but it's a fun time filler job for me.

My job is getting weird. it seems we don't have a scheduale and you just call in and if they need work then you come in. But to day I called then they told me to call back in 3 hours and I did and then they said they didn't need me. Uggg I could have been spending my time doing something cool insted of waiting to find out if I had to work. I'm not likeing this I'm thinking about getting a job maybe at a park near by collecting money and so on.

That's a good place to work. I currently work at Family Christan Stores. I originally wanted to work at a pet store, but none would hire me.

Before I worked at Family, I was a caretaker for a cancer patient until she went into hospitalized care.

And recently I had a baby-sitting job that was good in the beginning, but worsened later on. It all worked out because they couldn't pay me anymore and I was gonna quit anyway. :P

Jobs??

Postby realdeal » Sun Jul 03, 2005 6:08 pm

I work for a small non-profit organization called Christian Community Action. It is an organization of Christians in North Texas ministering to those who are poor. We try to help those who have lost their jobs or possibly their homes and we help them get back on their feet. CCA is divided into three resale stores that sell donated items in order to pay to help the poor. I work as the manager of the donation center for one of the three resale stores.
