Posting Habits: Quality or Quantity?

Postby majestic_21 » Sun May 29, 2005 10:00 am

Just wanted to ask how often and how much of a post do you guys create in forums? Now I know that sometimes this can vary depending on the topics at hand or the kind of mood you're in. But if you had to average your postings out, are you more into making in-depth and one at time posts (few postings), or is your style more towards getting the message out quickly and as much as you can?

For me, I post in threads whatever I feel is appropriate or whatever I can contribute the most in. I don't feel that every thread requires my attention, but I read them until there is something that I must let out. I'm quite the opposite in the "quantity" aspect as I feel that a few sentences would not make my point justified enough. I wouldn't mind typing up paragraphs if the thread demands it, so I guess I'm most definately quality over quantity.

I generally find i post like once a day sometimes. I feel it's better to post long single posts and get my point accross in a few paragraphs if the thread demands that. I'm pretty much quality over quantity as well. ^_^

I post on whatever threads that perk my attention. Some times this means I post only once on the thread but mostly if it's an interesting one I'll try to post on it
at least once per day that I'm at that particuliar forum.Currently I'm an active member of three forums:the CAA,Anime Angels and Anime Cafe Forum.I've been
longest at the Anime Cafe so I'm up to nearly 6,000 posts there.

I do post extremely long posts from time to time, but for the most part it seems to be quantity over quality (I love the Goof Off board to death, 'nuff said)

I usually only post when I have something to say, which doesn't happen very often. Also, I skip over the threads that don't interest me (that number has been increasing as of late...).

From the sheer number of times I've accidentally posted with one word... or no words... I have to try for at least some "quality."

But I prefer not to write posts that are too long. (At least in paragraph length.)

From my own experience, they get read less.

And, let's face it, it's fun to write a reply with only a few words. A smart comment, or whatever.

It's also fun to write run-on posts all about one's erudite experiences.

Um...

I think I've over posted.

Sometimes quality, sometimes quantity... I mean, some days I'll have somewhat profound, long posts... lol. And other days my posts will be soooo random...

It really depends on the topic. I like to give complete sentences for answers but if someone brings something up that wasn't mentioned before or presents a different point of view I like to respond quickly so if they're online hopefully they'll respnd right away too. I like to understand things as quickly as possible so depending on the subject that can lead to a lot of posting. :p
Still, if I'm just tickled by a particular post I see no reason to just post a smiley in the place of a valid response.

Despite what my post count might make you think, I tend to lurk more than I do outright post. When I post, it's usually (note, just usually--I like to occasionally goof off too you know) have something to say as an admin or because I have an opinion/fandom on whatever issue. I rarely just post for the sake of posting.

I don't really make posts to post. But I don't really like typing out textbooks either so a couple sentences in most threads and a couple paragraphs if it's something serious/informative whatnot.

I prefer quality over quantity, but there are some exceptions. Like the What are you ____ threads. Don't really know why, but I have lots of fun reading what everyone is doing (eg listening to, playing, reading) and posting up what I am doing myself.

One interesting thing I'll note about this thread: some of the posts could almost be interpreted as saying that lengthy posts are quality over quantity... which is of course highly ironic. I feel that "quality" has to do with saying what you wish to say well: neither rushing and making foolish mistakes nor polluting your message with needless words.

That having been said, I always support quality over quantity.

I find it ironic that you support quality over quantity, yet you have the highest post count of anyone on CAA, including the founder of the site who has been here for the longest time.

Why? Must the two be mutually exclusive? This assumption is one I find particularly distasteful.

This is a forum with thousands of different topics. When I post, I am actively seeking topics on which I feel that I have something "quality" to say. Given that I am willing to commit some time to CAA every day, it strikes me as perfectly logical that I would make numerous posts.

I write long, incredibly astute, wise responses to threads - and then close the tab instead of posting. Sometimes I'll do this repeatedly for a single thread. Then I post garbage to keep up my postcount.

I don't think you'll find it ironic at all if you've read most of UC's posts. Maybe you could check out his stuff in the Writing and RPG section (assuming that, that is where most of his posts are concentrated at). ^^;;

As for myself, well....I don't know. I try to write quality posts but I simply cannot resist the Force of the Goof Off Section. I count a seemingly silly and pointless goof-off post as quality if it makes someone laugh and brighten up their day. Isn't that the whole point of goofing off? >X3

I generally dont post, just for the sake of posting.
If I dont have anything meaningful to contribute, I dont bother taking up space.

Also, I dont really initiate many threads. I guess I am more of a conversation carrier, then starter.

NOTE: I dont think post counts inclued posts from the RPG section. Otherwise LB would be King. ^_^
Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

That is correct. Relating to this comment, I will that acknowledge what Mave said earlier is true: posting stories does create posts quickly, because each post has a 10,000 character limit and most chapters are well over that. Of course, if one takes into account the amount of time required for each of those posts, any time advantage is more than negated.
