What are is God's name in other world languages?

Postby Warrior 4 Jesus » Sat May 28, 2005 11:50 pm

I'm writing a story where there are strong Christian values and the journey of faith takes place and I want to refer to God, Jesus and Satan but use their names in other languages if I can for a bit of interest (like the "Shadowmancer" novel using the Ethopian names for them). I was wondering if anyone knew of any sites I could find this sort of stuff. I've tried Google but I had no luck.
Anyone?

Thanks for your help!

Oh dear, I stuffed up the thread title a little didn't I?
Impact, I tried Babelfish just now and it doesn't have the variety I want and Jesus and other searches all came back as translated "Jesus" or what have you.

Thanks for the help anyway!

God = Tuhan/Allah <--- there is an overlap with the reference to the Islamic God

Jesus Christ = Kristus Yesus

Satan = Iblis

Kaligraphic, no particular language.
Thanks Mave! That's a start. Although with God - I'm reffering to Our God, (the Christian God) and only real God. =-) Thanks again!

Thanks Talame! That's awesome! What a coincidence!
There's a character in my story who is a humble shepherd who turns out to be... (you know who) so I think Rohi is good name.

edit: just checked its actually 'Raah' not Rohi.

:thumb: Glad I could help matie! :grin:
Edit: I got the list from a different site. Personally, I think "rohi" would be better, as it doesn't sound like ra, the Egyptian sun god.

Oh, okay. Thanks Talame. When I think of Raah, I do think of the Egyptian sun god but with Rohi I think of that famous country* song from some years ago!

*take note: I do not endorse or enjoy country music =-P

Korean:

God = Ha-na-nim
Jesus Christ = Ye-su Gr-ri-su-do

God was called Ha-na-nim only because the missionaries long ago thought of what word to call God in Korea (writing God exactly is hard in Korean), so they used the most common word used to refer to the "all-mighty" entity that Koreans said those days.

Jesus Christ is simply saying Jesus Christ in Korean, slightly different, but that's how it goes.

In fact, similar with Satan. Sa-Tarn.

Thank LorentzForce!
Talame, I'm thinking of the song that's in the Slim Dusty style but I don't listen to country music, I heard it once and its about riding horses or something and rounding up cattle (fun- not). Anyway the "Ro high" bit is drawn out at a high volume towards the end of the song or chorus. Maybe ask your mum or dad if they've heard it. Sorry I'm so vague.

Anyone know the Hebrew name for Satan and Job?
Thanks!

French:

God = Dieu (Dee - uhh)

Jesus Christ= Jésus (Jay - zu) Christ (kreest)

Satan = Satan (sah - tohn) (ugh, that sound doesn't exist in english?)

I'm sorry, I know this is not what you want.. (why am I posting.)

Jesus could also be "Yeh-su-neem"

and we all know what Kami-Sama is...

All I know is that God comes from the German Gott.Actually if you look it up in the back of Strong's Concordance they show that the Greek word used is Theos.

Dios = God in spanish. Can be spelled "dios" for god (little d and g) and "dioses" for gods

Jesucristo = Jesus Christ in Spanish. Accent on the i tho... It's a hassle to get accents in browsers, I have discovered. Jesus can be spelled Jesus with an accent on the u, but that's actually a common Spanish name. Cristo is Christ

El diablo = the devil. Yet again, doing reading lately, it appears that I was wrong in my theory of there only being one devil. There are scriptures that say "devils". I don't know what Satan is in Spanish, but it's probably not too hard.

You can also refer to Jesus as Chuy in Spanish. (it's a common nickname/diminutive (kind of) for the name Jesús.)

In Greek:
God: Theos
Angel: aggelos (pronounced like angelos)
Jesus: Iesous
Demon: daimonion
Devil: Diabolos

Haitian:
Jezi Kri = Jesus Christ

The language they speak in Kosovo:
Zodi = God
God has called me to mission work in Paraguay and Brazil. I may return to CAA someday. God bless all of you!

[i]Two vast and trunk-less legs of stone stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, half sunk, a shattered visage lies. Round the decay of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare the lone and level sands stretch far away. On the pedestal these words are inscribed:

“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!â€
