Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but basicly its when you have a rope tied at the top of somthing...and slowly walk down the cliff or whatever back to the ground. Or, what these cops are doing...

If you're going to repel rocks, you'll need some of this.

Actually I never meant to post. I was going to send the wiki entry and comment on some other things, but noticed I was late for work, Must have accidentally hit the send button.

Considering the link is for the Gwinnet County Sheriff I'd think not.:P And I'm assuming you mean the GSG-9, or Grenzeshutzgruppe blah blah something or another. It is the "border police" wing of the German special forces created because of the Israeli athletes killed in the Munich Olympics in 72 or 73. They're not technically allowed to operate outside of Germany but I know they did some hostage rescue in Somalia in 93.

Anyway if you were confused because of the helmets well those ballistic helmets are pretty standard for police and military forces here and abroad. Cheap, light, and decent protection. I mean you can buy them from any police/military surplus store.

Yeah, I have seen American police wearing that.

I've tried rappelling twice as a teen, but back then I had terrible eye/hand coordination and hand to hand coordination and a mild fear of heights which were not good things to have when going down a cliff face, so both turned out unsuccessful.

The bouncing down the wall was definitely scarier than the walking backwards down the wall.

I didn't have a clue what you were talking about because in Australia we call that, "absailing."
