So, I wanna play an RPG to keep me busy during the Summer, suggestions?

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

So, I wanna play an RPG to keep me busy during the Summer, suggestions?

Postby Tommy » Thu May 19, 2005 3:14 pm

Yeah, RPGs aren`t actually my favorite gaming genre but they usually have better-than-movie storylines and fun battle systems to keep me busy. All the good games are coming out after the summer so I want a good game to keep me busy that i can easily buy at the store and I don`t have to bid it on ebay ala Grandia Xtreme, star ocean 2.

Recommend for Gameboy Advance, PS1, and PS2.

Series I have -not that much-

FF series ( I HAVE ALL OF THEM BUT 3 BECAUSE 3 ISNT IN AMERICA YET!)
Grandia (1, 2, and Xtreme)
Star Ocean (Just 3, I`m buying 2 online because I heard its better in everyway but graphics than So3).
Chrono Games
eh....just leave it at that and I`ll tell you if I`ve played it.

Note: Usually I like graphics the best that are like FF8 or better but if its really good with bad graphics i`ll check it out.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. That is one of the freakin' awesomest games ever made on the GBA, trust me. The battle system is a little tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's really, really fun.

I would suggest Tales of Symphonia, but that's a GC game.

Oh, do you have FFXI? If you want a game that'll keep you busy, play that. My friend's been playing for about a year now and just got his Black Mage to Lv. 75 (the highest it goes). That game is fun and sure to take up a good chunk of your social life.

I suggest Kingdom Hearts; it's not incredibly detailed/long, but quite enjoyable. And as an FF fan, you will love it.

I also suggest the Jak and Daxter series; there are 3 games in all, and yes the first one is cheesy and gimmicky, but kill it off in about 10 hours and you will have before you an AWESOME set of games in 2 and 3.

Also, Zone of the Enders and ZOE 2; both are short(er) games but VERY beautiful and VERY entertaining.

Something to keep you busy during the summer, eh? I would recommend The Traveller's Guide (rather, the part that's actually done... -_- ), but that'll only keep you busy for about an hour or so.

How about Xenosaga? Volume 2 is out now and volume 1 is a greatest hits title, so you can get it for $20.

Hmm...good RPGs I recommend:

Legend of Legaia: A rare find, to be sure, but if you find it, quite lucky you are. ^^ It has a good storyline, a nice soundtrack, a very unique and fun battle system, and it's just all around fun. It's the only RPG I've seen where changing your equipment makes your characters look different. A word of warning, though. For some reason, Legend of Legaia doesn't like to run properly on the PS2, so if you buy it, make sure you have a PS1 handy to play it.

Wild ARMs 3: Though to fully appreciate it a knowledge of the other two games is required, Wild ARMs 3 is enjoyable nonetheless. It should be fairly cheap, too, it's been out for a couple of years. It's an RPG with a wild west theme. The music is good, the graphics are cel-shaded (but excellent), and the opening theme changes as you meet new characters and enemies (I think there's like seven or eight opening animations).

Arc the Lad Collection: I warn you though, Arc the Lad I was a first-gen PS1 game, so the graphics are fairly dated, but the voice acting and music are superb. Really, you're just trying to make it through Arc the Lad I so that you can transfer your save file over to Arc the Lad II and unlock a ton of cool bonus features in that one, since Arc the Lad II is a VERY good RPG and has about 80+ hours of play time if you do all the side quests. Don't bother with Arc the Lad III, though...it's lame.

Lunar 1 and 2: Also quite rare...but worth it. I don't care for the battle system much, but the storyline rocks and the anime cut scenes RULE. The English voice acting is also really good. And the Boat Song is so awesome...and the bromides...heh heh heh... >:3

Mega Man X Command Mission: It's Mega Man...it's an RPG...yet somehow, it works...kinda. It isn't going to be the best RPG you've ever played, I'll tell you that right now. And the music is pretty irritating. And the manual is worthless. I'll tell you right now, since there's no other way to know: those little crystal thingies you always see are "treasure chests." You have to dash into them to open them. Yeah, I didn't know what they were either when I first saw them, because the manual sucks so bad, so I ended up missing all the treasure in the first level because of that and had to restart my game.

That's about all the good RPGs I can think of. So just pick one and go for it. :thumb:

Ah, Megaman X Command Mission. My friend has that but he said I can`t borrow it till he beats it.

That kid was so desperate to borrow Star Ocean: Till The End of time he just swiped Disc One. Anyways, his name is Josh and he told me he may join Christian Anime in the future.

Kaemmerite, sorry it appeared I was highly concerned graphicwise. Really bad graphics bother me, but not if i know its old. I don`t like if a game with crappy graphics is made during a period of good graphics (coughcoughdragonwarriorsevencoughcough).

If you like Anime and FF Tactics tben you should love Nippon Ichi's Disgaea. It has to be one of the greatest Strategy Turn-Based RPGs out there. I have had that game for over a year and I am still devoting time to it (besides breaks for some new games). You will not be dissapointed.

One of the older Suikoden games, those things were amazing RPGs, the graphics weren't the best, but the gameplay made it one of the best RPGs I've ever played.
I'd recommend getting suikoden 1 or 2, although, you might be hardpressed, cause they stopped making more copies of Suiko 2, and i think the same went for Suiko 1...

Judging from the reviews, Suikoden 4 is considered the worst game in the series.

KOTOR is great, but rather short. Only about 30 hours or so.

If you can get into The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, that can easily last the whole summer. The game is huge and completely open-ended. A lot of people don't like it because it moves slow in comparison to a lot of other RPG's, but I think it rocks. Too bad I lost my other copy to an addicted friend. *sigh*

XBOX and PC, I believe...

Sword of Mana (GBA) is pretty good.

Mario & Luigi. Short (beat in about 16 hours), but something any RPG/Nintendo fan must play. Rent if you must, but it's one of the best GBA games (besides CoM) that I have ever played, and I believe to be the best of the Mario RPG games.
It's incredibly unique and the gameplay will pull you in immediately.

If you`re refering to Superstar Saga, I`m borrowing that from my friend and i have to honestly say it`s the first RPG I`ve ever played that I wouldn`t mind throwing in a lake, although it wasn`t mine so I couldn`t.

I find that Final Fantasy X-2 highly surpassess Mario RPGs. IMO

Yes, that seems to be the sentiment among many... Khee hee hee... Sorry, I couldn't resist... It was so easy to add and remove to build that sentace. I could make a documentary!

So you have all FFs? Yeah, Tactics will keep you busy for a long time, but be warned it's much harder than the normal series (unless you count side quests like the monster arena on FFX) and some of the plot could make you angry...

Besides that, you can try MAKING an RPG... Of course, RPG maker 2 is much harder to use than the computer one, unfortunately, but it can keep you occupied for hours provided you have a little patience with it... The learning process is long and strenuous, but it should be worth something at the end... At least it was with me and the computer version, before I deleted it at Agetec's general request... *sigh* Why won't they release a leget PC version? The PS2 version's just so hard to get used to...

I hope you're joking, because I sure was. In fact, that was kind of my point with that little deviation, because I had just gotten done watching 45 minues of one of his documentaries... Seeing as how political discussions are no-no, that's as far as I'll take that...

In any case, a great game that's half zelda, half final fantasy, and half Fern Gully (yes, it is 150% of a game) is "Sword of Mana" for GBA, which is a remake of Seiken Densetsu 1 for the GB... It's much better than that horrible "Legend of Mana" on PS... Why do the fourth steps in a series always suck? And the third is usually the best... SD3 is the best game in the series. Here's hoping N lets Japanese games be included in that pay-download service... In any case, even if you'd played the original, there is a LOT of new content... The storyline has been greatly expanded, the game is MUCH prettier, and the music is mostly better, though I admit I miss the original traveling theme... Sometimes they pick the wrong instruments for the remixes...

Not to throw my two cents into this at the last second but… I will anyway.

While Xenogears may have been a very well made game, I cant say that I would recommend you getting it. Some story elements may have your parents (and even you) sitting in dismay at your game choice. Honestly, I couldn’t finish the game, and I can almost guarantee you that if this title was produced on a system with a refined graphics engine (like the PS2), it would have easily achieved a Mature rating.

I cant say much different for Xenosaga episode1 (I have not played episode2). If you were playing it with your parents around you probably wouldn’t get through the first chapter before eyebrows were being raised.

I have not played Golden Sun for FFT Advance. But my guess would be that if they were on GBA, they probably have much more mild content then the above two.

If you are still looking for a PS2 RPG, Dark Cloud 2 was a lot of fun (plenty of side quests and good voice acting too) or if you are willing to exert a little patience (and can find a copy) Suikoden III is terrific. Also, I don’t know if you are into strategy games, but I would recommend Advance Wars2 (on GBA) to just about any one (if you haven’t played it yet).

Well, pray that you make wise title choices and enjoy your summer gamming. ;)

Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.
