Naming your child

Talk about anything in here.

Postby Debitt » Wed May 18, 2005 10:07 pm

I just realized...:lol: two of my three cousins are named Sarah and Joshua (the third is Hannah). x3;

For my children...I think right now I'd lean towards a name of Chinese or Japanese origin to honor my ancestry. ^_^ I've always been partial to the names Hayato (for a boy) and Li'an (for a girl - it's also my middle name. =3). I'm always so jealous of people who have a first name that reflects their nationality, I consider it such a blessing.

At one point I was contemplating what it would be like to have children named Torres or Raiyuu (characters in my book, both boys), but if I ever get my book published, I think that would be a bit weird for them. ^_^;

Naming... naming....

I would name my first child Cory. Yes, even if it's a girl (ever heard of Corrie Ten Boom?) Why? Uh, I guess I like the sound. Plus, it's to spite some gnome-toothed Chinese guy I know who refused to name his baby (coming in 4 mos. we hope) Cory after my suggestion. I wouldn't name ANYONE after me. I've felt like a wierdo most of my life because of my name (see my username), and I couldn't even fall back on the excuse that "it's the name of my heritage."

Image

Would you name any of your daughters after Tohru?

You know what?... No. I say no for the same reason I refuse to name any children after me. Wierdness. It would be ill advised to name anyone after a short-lived fling like Dad did with me. Today, I wouldn't have known he liked any Swedish ski jumpers if it weren't for my accursed handle.

If my son is a mackdaddy, I'll name him playa... No, I'm kidding

Um... I only have a name for a daughter, really:

Emi.

Yeah, it's Japanese but it also works because it sounds like "Amy" I was going to name my first daughter "Amy" but since I want to live in japan, "Emi" works... It actually goes back to my early days of being a moonie... I liked Mercury and Jupiter the best out of the bunch because they weren't absolute ditzes like Moon and Venus were, and they weren't jerks like Mars... Ami became Amy for the American version, so I started to like that name... Even after I became an anti-DiC moonie, I held onto my love for that name...

I'd love to give my sons Vinkan names, but I don't know how well that'd go over with my future wife... Or me by the time that was to be... I like Intrex and Koosaro, but naming them after my own characters is too cruel... I'd likely use something from my stock of vinkan provided they weren't names of main characters... Mah, I probably wouldn't actually do that...

Another possibility is to give them names of attributes in Japanese... Sorta like Ai is love, Shinji is faith... I'd do names like that. Shinji is the only one that sounds masculine so far, but Ai is a possibility for daughter #2... I could name one of my daughter's "Ryunosuke" if I wanted to be really mean, hehehe...

What I refuse to do is name any kid after me or my wife... I just won't do it..

BTW, the name in the bible is "Leah" not "Leia". Also, my neice is named "Kori" Her full name is something like "Korideth" I'm not sure where it came from... And Corrie Ten Boom? Have you ever heard her speak? I saw a short video of her speaking to YWAMers at the munich olympics in '7? (just before the terrorist attack) http://www.ywam.org/books/vid_rev.html Incredible story that isn't told very often when you hear about the terrorist attack at the olympics...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evcNPfZlrZs Watch this movie なう。 It's legal, free... And it's more than its premise. It's not saying Fast Food is good food. Just watch it.

I don't really know what I'd name my kids... haven't given it much thought really. I guess I'm hoping for what happened to my mum to happen to me:
ie, when she was pregnant with my brother (she didnt know it was a boy) she could only think of the name "samuel", and when she was pregnant with me (again, didnt know I was a girl) could only think of what my name is now :P

Ok. well, actualy Micah and I have talked about names we like. ^_^; yes....it might be an extrememly premature (as in we're not even engaged yet....)thing to be talking about...but it's fun.

ok. So for a boy we came up with the name Leon Phillip (insert last name here) and a girl Miah (my-ah) Rose (last name here). I've always liked the names Leon and Phillip (also like Aaron...but not as much). He liked Miah because it's a tribute to his adoration for his oldest bro (jeremiah) and he liked the middle name "rose" because I love roses. ^_^ and when you say the name it almost sounds like you're saying "my rose".

[size=84][color=seagreen]YOU SEE

You see into the deepest part of me ---

beyond the fog I hide behind.

You cast your light upon the shadows

that stretch like cobwebs in my mind.

You ease the pain when I am hurting,

and morbid visions from my past

pierce into the realm of Reason

as though I danced on blades of glass.

You grant me strength when I have fallen

and, once again, I've lost my way.

You take my hand in Yours and lead me

into the promise of a brand new day.

You bring order to all my chaos,

yet set my well-laid plans awry.

You place me on a firm foundation ---

then give me wings so I can fly.

You sand away my roughened edges

and polish all the dullest parts

until I stand before Your presence...

a newly-sculpted work of art.

You see into the heart within me,

right through my motives and selfish will.

And yet, in spite of all You see

You say You love me even still.

Oh! Bobtheduck reminded me of the other girl name I like that I couldn't think of last night. It's Emma Leigh. When you run it together, obviously it sounds just like Emily, but it's like a cool variation. And I really like the name Emma too, so that's probably what I will name girl number three, if I get to that many. . .

The names Cory and Jacob were mentioned, and I really like those too. So in order to use all the names I like, I'm just gonna either have to have loads of kids or give them multiple middle names!

Wow....I don't know.

I guess I'd want it to be something that went well with Swan.

My RP friends may find some of these names familiar, as they are ones I really like ;)

Well, Alexander is a pretty good boy's name.

While the name Bryce is awesome, it doesn't really sound good with Swan.

Maxwell I've always liked. Aiden is also a cool name.

For girls, I really like names that are variations on Mary. Miriam is one. Miren (Basque, it's pronouned "meer-en") is one of my very favorites.

I also like Sophia.

Rosalyn is another good one.

If I had a girl, I'd name her Kalina

If I had a boy, I'd name him Samuel Jon...maybe

Ok...woah some people are going way out on the limb for "unique" names. And here's my philosophy on that. I don't think it is right to name your child a "unique" name because you believe that will help them be unique. Let your kid name themselves and I don't mean that literally. If you name your kid Vash because you like Trigun, Bano because you like U2, or Aeris because you like FF7, you're forcing something that interests you on them for the rest of their lives.

Will your child have the same interests in anime, literature, film, music, and videogames as you? Probably not. So it's a little unfair for them to have to deal with being named after something like that their whole lives. Let them be unique on their own instead of having to deal with being associated with that everytime they meet someone. I know most of you aren't at that time yet where you really have to decide on your child's name, but still keep that in mind.

If I have kids, I'll choose the name when God gives it. I'd pray about it*and look over names with my wife, and try to listen for the Lord's voice.

OK, I find the statement above a little harsh. . . I mean, yes, I have found some of the names posted here somewhat random, and a few downright bizzare, but good grief, it's the parents porrogative to name their child what they like. . . at least from a female's perspective, if I am going to carry a kid in my stomach for nine stinkin' months and go through all the discomfort of child birth, I'm naming the kid something I like. They can change it later if it's that bad. And also, half these people will probably look back on the names that they like now and laugh, so really, don't worry about it. And if they don't, it won't be the worst thing that could possibly happen. :thumb:

Stealing my mst origin name for my future child!? Geez, Yumie, why don't you just STEAL MY FIRST CHILD FOR GOODNESS SAKE!!

Really, she'd better not steal that name, or there will be RIFTS in the family. ;)

In addition to the aforementioned covetted name, I'd like to name one of my children Kana. It's so cute a name.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

If my wife were Japanese or of Japanese descent I'd favor:
Yuki
Mitsuki(gee now where'd that COME from? )
Kagome
Katsumi
Akane

on the other hand I'd settle for these names:
Rachel Moore(one of my Irish great grandmother's ancestors did
have the last name of Moore as a maiden name so it would work)
Susannah Maria
Romana(yeah,I told a friend of mine in Georgia a long time ago that
I was thinking of that as a name for a daughter)
Judith Caroline
Elizabeth Amelia
Charlotte Anne
Mary Margaret
Sarah Ann

Now for boys' names:
James Richard
John Gilliam(after one of my ancestors)
Thomas John
Jacob Henry(my maternal great grandfather's name, actually it was
Henry Jacob but listed as Jacob in the census)
Richard Washington(same reason as John Gilliam)
Josiah Holliman(see above)
Peter James
Edward William
John Hauze(see John Gilliam)
Andrew Fritz(my great grandfather)

I would love to meet all of your children some day. It would make for a very interesting reunion, since I will be partially deaf from listening to blaring music and blind due to the many hours spent sitting in front of the computer monitor.

I'm not sure what I would want to name my kids. I would like to choose something unique, but not too weird. The meaning has to reflect some part of my child's personality. I think that names are very important and your choice of name should not be taken lightly.
