What do you think a Legend of Zelda game should be like?

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

What do you think a Legend of Zelda game should be like?

Should it contain voice acting?(The new LoZ is rumored to contain this.)

Should Link have some lines?

Should it have the cell-shaded design of Wind Waker, the realistic design of the upcoming LoZ for the GC, or a mix of the two?

Should Link be in his younger or older form?

Would you change any aspect of the gameplay?

Should Zelda's bishounen ninja form finally be....explained? :eyebrow:

I don't think so, because most likely the voice acting would be of mediocre quality for the American version and pull down the polish Zelda games are know for. *recalls Starfox: Assault* Of course, reviewers, like IGN, will still whine about this.
Should Link have some lines?

Nah, I don't think so. You pretty much are Link. That's why the character's name is Link, because he "links" the player into the world.

Should it have the cell-shaded design of Wind Waker, the realistic design of the upcoming LoZ for the GC, or a mix of the two?

Realistic, like Metroid Prime. It fits the world better, I think. Now, I loved Wind Waker, but I don't think that should be the graphical standard. -Just a good deviation from the norm.
Should Link be in his younger or older form?

Both, doesn't matter to me.

Would you change any aspect of the gameplay?

So far, the "z" targeting system from OoT is still solid and strong. I'm always open to new twists. Now, I think the aiming system should be redone, it still feels to flimsy.

Well, in gameplay terms Wind Waker really got the formula right, but I'd like to see some more permanant weapons. Link could have the Master Sword for general use, a big 'ol broadsword for heavy duty enemies, and a pair of daggers for sneak attacks, and he'd continually loot new ones as the game went on. Perhaps the game should have more spells, a la Ocarina of Time. Also, Link should have more stealth levels, such as those in Wind Waker's Forsaken Fortress. ('Cept you'd actuallly be able to fight enemies if you got caught.) The only major gamelay change I can think of would be a substantial increase in length.
As for graphics, I'd like a combination of adult link and cel-shading. (Think Killer 7. Like this.)

No. I like Link being a silent protagonist, (sp?) cause I feel it allows the player to 'connect' with him better... he doesn't have any specific personality; who he is is defined by the player.

I like it the way it is.

Why, dare I ask, is the game known as Legend of Zelda? Zelda's more of an off-the-side stage prop, not an integral part of the game... That being said,

Should it contain voice acting?(The new LoZ is rumored to contain this.)

Yes. If not serious voice acting, at least vocals like Way of the Samurai, or Sid Meier's Pirates! did.

Should Link have some lines?

He already does, they're just not displayed. Like most FF RPGs, at least the older ones. You talk to somebody and they respond to a question you never really asked.

Should it have the cell-shaded design of Wind Waker, the realistic design of the upcoming LoZ for the GC, or a mix of the two?

The cartoony look/cell shading did okay, but I think realistic is better. That Killer 7 pic is definitely not the way to go. LoZ is not a dark game, and those kind of graphics tend to do nasty things to your detail.

Should Link be in his younger or older form?

Good question. Very good question.

Would you change any aspect of the gameplay?

Why is it called LoZ? Honestly, I would like to see an LoZ game starring someone other than Link. Link is awesome, I'm not disputing that, but he's becoming a bit old-school stuff. Maybe somebody that's not so physical, but with a greater magical capacity, like Zelda herself. That's right, your world, you claim the story, you save the day.

Should Zelda's bishounen ninja form finally be....explained?

I thought they did that already. Seriously, we know it's Zelda, we know why she took the form and where she got it from, what else do we need?

Scratch that half-way voice acting idea. It's even worse than no voices. The real answer is yes, dang it! <admin snip: watch the mouth>
Take it like you gave it; what else matters in the end? To be honest, it's all a one-shot test; that leaves plenty of places to go wrong, but how will you ever know? There's a pointer, I will admit. Turn it on, listen to it, feel it burn.

No, no, and no. I don't mind yelling and such, but I think Link talking would be a BAD idea. Besides, the creator of Link already said a Zelda game would NEVER contain full voice acting. There may be one or two spoken lines, he said, but it would never be like FFX. I honestly think that's a good thing, then again, I'm old fashioned.

Should Link have some lines?

*shrug* Doesn't matter to me. Some younger gamers complain about this, but I've played my fair share of "silent protagonist" games, so it doesn't really bother me. Zelda isn't an RPG, so speech isn't really necessary for him, you know? And as someone mentioned earlier, he does speak, you just don't read it.

Should it have the cell-shaded design of Wind Waker, the realistic design of the upcoming LoZ for the GC, or a mix of the two?

Either way. Doesn't matter. I liked Wind Waker's graphics, honestly.

Should Link be in his younger or older form?

His older form, I guess. He was 14 in Ocarina of Time, and that is about the standard age for most of the games, I believe (he was sixteen in Zelda II).

Would you change any aspect of the gameplay?

Wind Waker did a good job removing the frustration the targeting system had from OoT and MM, mainly the impossibility of un-targeting a bad guy. So, I can't really think of any huge complaints about the gameplay.

It's called the Legend of Zelda because in the first game, Zelda had been kidnapped, and Link had only heard rumors of her existance. There's also a deeper meaning if you've played the second game, I won't go into TOO much detail, but basically there was a princess long, long ago in Hyrule named Zelda who fell into a deep sleep and couldn't be awakened. In memory of that princess, the King of Hyrule decreed that all princesses born in Hyrule from that day forward would be named Zelda in her honor.

And there WAS a Zelda game in which you played Zelda. It was called The Wand of Gamelon, it was for Phillips CD-i, and it stunk worse than...well, I can't think of an analogy at the moment, but just take my word that it is one of the worst games ever made, and every Zelda fan should flee in horror at the mention of its name, as I am about to do.

I wouldn't mind it. I've been playing some Final Fantasy X, and I never realized before how much I missed voices in a game--and the VA in the Jak series ROCKED, so it is possible to have quality stuff. The sound of me scrolling through dialogue just isn't quite as nice. I do have one reqeust; and that is the ability to turn off either the dubs or the subs--having both simultaneously is rather irritating.

Should Link have some lines?

Dunno. I like the idea of hearing him speak--after all, I wonder who they'd pick for the VA! But, I do like the idea also of having a silent protaganist be your "link" into the game.

Should it have the cell-shaded design of Wind Waker, the realistic design of the upcoming LoZ for the GC, or a mix of the two?

Wow, that's a tough question. I absolutely fell in love with Wind Waker; it's probably my favorite Zelda game by far. However, with today's standards....I'd love to see something along the lines of FF. So hmm....guess I'd be happy either way.

Should Link be in his younger or older form?

Older, 'cause he's a total bish!

Would you change any aspect of the gameplay?

*mutters* I'd make the puzzles easier....

Should Zelda's bishounen ninja form finally be....explained?

I think it'd make for a cool cutscene or something....but, I did write a fanfic on it once, so I'm satisfied (yeah, I was a Zelda nerd for a while >.< )

No! T__T The "HA! HUH! HYAAHHH~" is good enough for me, and Link speaking would be just TOO WEIRD for me.
Should Link have some lines?

A few, maybe. But not like an FF game for the reasons others have stated.
Should it have the cell-shaded design of Wind Waker, the realistic design of the upcoming LoZ for the GC, or a mix of the two?

Either or. It depends on the story and the style of the game Nintendo's aiming for, really. Personally I liked both styles. O.o I don't see what people had against "Cell-da"
Should Link be in his younger or older form?

=D Older! <3 Mmmm, bishounen. x3

Not really. =O If it's not broken, don't fix it.

Guess I'll answer my own questions.

Should it contain voice acting?(The new LoZ is rumored to contain this.)

I wouldn't mind this, really. Of course, if it was bad voice acting, I'd mind it very much.

Should Link have some lines?

Alot of people believe that a silent protaganist allows them to connect with the character. I don't see how that can be. No matter what the player says or how the player says it, the in game characters will react the same way. Link's personality is not your personality. Thus, there can be no connection between the player and Link. A way to solve this problem, and keep those that don't want a talkative Link happy, is to include multiple dialogue options(at least 3 or 4). By picking the way Link reacts, the player's personality becomes Links personality.

Should it have the cell-shaded design of Wind Waker, the realistic design of the upcoming LoZ for the GC, or a mix of the two?

I just finished Wind Waker, and I loved it. However, I wouldn't want the LoZ series to have super-deformed cell-shading as the graphic norm. I think a balance between cell-shading and the realistic style could be done well. After all, Ganon's Wind Waker design looked awesome. Unlike Link, he wasn't SD-ified. If all the characters were treated that way, I believe it would look quite good.

Should Link be in his younger or older form?

Both. He is the Hero of Time isn't he? There an obvious way to make everybody happy in this aspect right there.

Would you change any aspect of the gameplay?

I really hope the upcoming GC LoZ uses Wind Waker's battle system(or an improvement thereof). It's extended combo's and and ability to counter blew Ocarina of Time's gameplay away. It has nothing to do with gameplay, but I hope they ignore Wind Waker's story and timeline, and treat the next game like it happens after Majora's Mask.

Should Zelda's bishounen ninja form finally be....explained?

I thought they did that already. Seriously, we know it's Zelda, we know why she took the form and where she got it from, what else do we need?

I, personally, would like to know if she actually(physically) turns into a guy(as is widely believed), or if she just looks like one.

I think LoZ should return to old-skool 2d format (but if not an option realistic is much better then cellshading as long as the queen faries are more like link to the past), but with an immense world and storyline at least 2-3 times as long as link to the past (it was fun, but i beat it in less then 2 weeks when i first played it.) Also, less dungeons and more storyline movement. This is my most desired aspect of the game. With an involved storyline, which would require link to talk somewhat, or at least have some lines. Link should spend most of the game at least in his adult form, but perhaps have small missions as a child (like w/ zelda as kids they have to plant a tree or somthing to be able to get an awesome bow made from the tree as an adult.) Another thing i would add would be a learning ai for enemys (at least for bosses) that would, in essence, calculate a level of difficulty automatically depending on player style and skill.
Zelda should be definately more in-depth of a character, perhaps as an ai helper - if they make the ai good (no running into walls or getting stuck in a corner :-)

Hope this adds somthing to the discussion =P

Ah, thank you for reminding me of that. Yes, the Fairy Queens in OoT and MM were SCARY. >< Caked in Mascara, shrieking, wearing those horrendous leopard skin bikinis or whatever...whoever came up with those freaky fairy designs should be lynched.

I liked the fairies in Wind Waker okay, they were good...but LttP had the best Fairy Queen designs, in my opinion. They should return to those designs.

Actually, as long as they don't wear clown makeup and laugh like they did in the N64 games, I'm fine with it...

One last character design note. Link NEEDS tights of some sort under that green tunic. Maybe not tights, necessarily, but some sort of pant-type-garment.

I'm playing Zelda II right now, and Link has no tights or leg covering of any kind. Whenever he picks up an item...it's just not right. ><

it'd be a challenge not like the first one for the 64 that was just so easy it made me sad even though it was a lot of fun T_T was kind of disappointed that i beat it so much easier than the original for the NES... lol i never beat the second one (the adventure of link) x.x the final boss of that kept killing me over and over until the cartrage spazzed and i lost all my data

there are plenty of stories where a girl tricks everyone into thinking shes a boy. the only difference in this case that i see is that the girl that did the tricking wasn't the main character so the players were tricked along with the other characters in the story

These questions have been answered a bit too much, but...

Chosen Raven wrote:Should it contain voice acting?(The new LoZ is rumored to contain this.)

Personally I say yes. I can't really see what harm it would do, provided that there is good voice acting. By large, I'm not impressed with many Japanese voice actors, so I'd actually prefer an English dub.

Chosen Raven wrote:Should Link have some lines?

That depends on what type of game they want to make. If they're aiming for the classic style, in which Link isn't truly a character, then no. If they want to make him be an actual person, then yes.

Chosen Raven wrote:Should it have the cell-shaded design of Wind Waker, the realistic design of the upcoming LoZ for the GC, or a mix of the two?

Realistic, without a doubt. It isn't so much that I dislike Windwaker-esque graphics, but that I feel they don't have what more realistic styles do.

Chosen Raven wrote:Should Link be in his younger or older form?

Less formulaic "dungeon-item-boss" perhaps. I'd like to have a boss attack while merely traveling somewhere, or find major items not guarded by a massive dungeon.

You guys hear that the new Zelda game for the GC is going to have a bonus disc remake of the Windwaker. Its definately confirmed and i`ll see if I can find a picture of it on the internet. I saw some screenshots in GamePro Magazine and it contains two dungeons that were deleted due to the fact it was geared towards more experienced gamers. The graphics for the remake are the same as the new Zelda and there in one package so this must mean......

The people who said the new release was a sequel to WW could be right.....anyways....

Voice Acting: Yes!
Link`s Lines: Perhaps. If you get to choose what he says.
Graphics: Be real. Be cool. Be a Nunchuck Master.
Younger or Older Form: You should switch from younger to older.
Gameplay Changes: I`d battles like Army Vs. Army and be able to team up with other characters.
Zelda Ninja: Whatever that is....?

Ok.

Hate to break it to you, dude, but that was an April Fool's joke. It was actually EGM who did it, and they made up some screenshots as a hoax. If you read the article, it says, "Preorders starting APRIL 1ST." That should've been a big red light that it was a joke.

Yeah, Nintendo has nothing better to do than completely re-render an entire adventure game and then give it out for free with a game that's going to sell in the millions anyway. Sure, why not.

The WW remake is undoubtedly a fake, but it's for the best, IMO. Putting the game in realistic style would kill the feel of that great game.
On an unrelated note, I have a new idea of how to change Zelda. Splice it onto Prince of Persia, throw in special items, then add an equipment system and targeting. The following formula is approximately equal to awesome.

What feel to the game would you be missing? The graphics are the only reason I quit the game and what I saw in that issue of GamePro looked awesome. I personally hate Gamecube and its criddy graphics but i make few exceptions for games.

I saw a picture of windwaker of an poorly animated bot jumping in the air to attack a polygone-like red kite with a head.

Then I saw a picture of what appeared to be a boy with a plummed green hat and a green out fit about to slash his sword through a Gigantic crimson Hawk. And the bird falls into the ground and doesn`t vanish into a puff of smoke.

For voice acting, as long as Link nor Zelda doesn't have any lines. I think it would ruin the game personally if they did have voices. Other characters though might be a good idea.

I was a fan of Wind Waker's graphics and I'm a fan of OoT graphics. Both are unique and add a different feel to each game. Though I did get a kick of sailing around in that boat in OoC more than riding a horse.

I think it would be cool to be able to give stuff to people in order to increase a relationship type thinbg. I am also a huge fan of games that includes Completetion stuff (like Tales of Symphonia's "Monster list"). When you see a new enemy, have the ability to add that in some sort of thing. Kinda like Wind Waker's Sculpture side-quest qhich I love to do.

I'd like to see other weapons. Maybe elemental weapons.

I expect this new game to be awesome.

What feel to the game would you be missing?

The non-realistic feel the game gives you if you which is diminshed when you make the game look realistic.

Right THERE. In black and white. "Remade LoZ:WW in EGM's April issue is an April Fool's Joke (mods can unsticky)"

Do a google search on "Wind Waker" and "April Fool's", and you'll find about 576 results about how the re-rendered Wind Waker bonus disc is an April Fool's joke.

Dude, think about it. Wind Waker is for Gamecube. If Nintendo released a bonus disc with Wind Waker on it for FREE, they wouldn't sell any more copies. That would equal a loss of money. Business 101 tells us that companies like making money. Therefore, it would be stupid to do so. And come on...do you know how much effort it would take to completely remake Wind Waker?

Well, I'll tell you what.

If they release a bonus disc with a remade Wind Waker that has two bonus dungeons on it, I will give you my beachside condo in Oklahoma for free.

So you enjoy an unrealistic feeling. That`s the dumbest thing i`ve ever heard since I tuned into the Newlyweds for four seconds. Well, if you do like the crappy unrealistic feeling the n Gamecube is the system you need. With more games for little kids and horrible graphics. Have you seen the graphics for Zelda: Four Swords Adventures and that crappy Beyblade game? That`s an example of Nintedo`s amazing graphics. 8 bit rules now! Well i`m over reacting but Xbox and PS2 completely crushes. The only genre that graphics doesn`t really matter is RPGs which Gamecube has few if not none of.

And yes, I believed that Apri Fools Joke. Shut up.

That post wasn't to me, so I'll give only a limited response, but I do have something to say: video games are intrinsically unrealistic. You wouldn't want a "realistic" game if that meant no magic, no monsters and (most likely) a dead hero. I'm not a fan of Wind Waker, but I can understand how a stylized game could appeal.

Meanwhile, just a reminder to be civil.

It's okay, dude...I didn't mean to come down hard on you. I myself have fallen for quite a few April Fool's jokes myself (including the one Shatterheart perpetrated).

I agree with Fireproof. Wind Waker wasn't meant to be a totally serious game. I actually enjoyed the graphics. Graphics don't have to be realistic to be good. I've seen realistic graphics that looked like absolute and total crap.

And Gamecube has excellent graphics. Ever played Metroid Prime 2? Those graphics are absolutely incredible. But think about it. Gamecube hasn't been out that long, so programmers haven't been able to utilize the full capacity of its graphics. Look at the first generation PS2 games. They don't look as good compared to the current games. The programmers know the system better, and are able to produce nicer graphics as a result. If the programmers worked hard, they could produce graphics just as nice on the PS2 as on the Xbox.

And yes, I own Four Swords. That game wouldn't have worked well as a realistic game. It was cartoony. What do you expect from a game where you can pick up your partner and toss him around? For that matter, I don't hear anyone complaining about Zelda: A Link to the Past being too cartoony. In fact, I hear people say that it was one of the best Zelda games, and its graphics weren't realistic. They were just as cartoony as Four Swords. So why is it okay for LttP to have cartoony graphics but not Wind Waker or Four Swords?

Quick edit: After seeing uc's post, I hope that this fits within the realm of being civil. ^^

Gamecube and Xbox came out the same timeand Xbox graphics are the best of any system. I prefer PS2 though.
