JPII did a lot for unity between East and West, and with the Jews. Unity among Christians is something very close to my heart, and I hope to live to see the day when divisions among us will cease. I was so happy I could cry when I read about him seeking Christian unity.

I don't know what name Mercurius took though.
I think Benedict XVI will make a great Pope from what little I have read
or heard about him.
Then again I'm Protestant and so it doesn't effect me as much as it would
our Catholic members.
My sister in Alaska, who's Baptist, thinks that the more liberal Catholics especially here in the States aren't exactly going to be too happy though.

In one of his books he reminds us that Christ himself prayed "That they may be one" and that indicates ecumenism and seeking to bring about unity is important for the Church to seek out.
