Cardnal Ratzinger was the one I was most hoping for, so I'm estatic. Several of my friends were actually interviewed on the Pope by one of our local stations (they happened to be leaving the student center with the head of the theology department, so they got interviewed with him.)

Yes, he is.

Theoretically the cardinals could choose any Catholic in the world, but if he wasn't a Bishop, he'd have to be ordained one immediately (VERY unlikely).

Yeah you might want to stop right there frwl I don't appreciate that much as a Catholic. And I'm glad they chose a more traditional conservative pope. With all the new age idiology and relativism trying to force itself into the Church we want a pope that's going to stay straight and narrow.

I agree with Yojimbo. I'm glad that a conservitave Pope was chosen. Tradition is important in the Catholic church, Roman and Orthadox. My grandma complains abut how the church has changed since she was a kid. I'm glad we get someone who won't be making radical changes.

There are a few more qualifications than that. He must be male (in order to be ordained) and I'm fairly certain he must be fully initiated into the Church (baptism, confirmation, eucharist).

Arnold is at least nominally Catholic, but holds some contradictory political views which shall not be discussed.

ja, that's what I was refering to. I don't think that he and John Paul II would have gotten along too well... yet again, he seemed pretty peaceful when dealing with the Communist leaders in Poland years back. Peaceful, yet asurtive (spelling?). Gotta love him for helping free one of my people's countries! *is part Polish*

You do know that JPII was Polish too, right?

Although we can judge Arnold's political positions, his devotion to Christ is not something that we are able to judge. How about we just leave it at that.

1. Yes I did! ^^ That's one of the things that made him unique among the popes. First pope in a long time who wasn't Italian.

400 years I believe. Ratzinger/Benedict is the first German in nearly 1000 years.

Yay for the German!!

Im happy for you guys, I was hopeing for a conservative guy and i just read a quote in the the paper he made before being elected and I agreed with everything he said, particularly with regards to his comments about the dictatorship of relativism in world.

Hopefully he will set the a strong and godly course for the Catholic Church in years to come and create interest for God in Germany.

It will be good to have someone who will continue John Paul II's policies. I'll have to get around to taking out the one book of his we have in the humanities library in order to get a sense of his thinking.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

I'm glad that they got this sorted out so quickly (and I'm glad that it didn't turn into anything like the longest conclave, that lasted over two years or however long it was). John Paul II was a good pope and I think it's great that Benedict XVI wants to continue on with his policies.

But you know, onto more pressing matters:

Does the old Pope Hat get recycled or will they make Pope Benedict XVI a new Pope Hat? I'm genuinely curious about this.

I think it's extremely likely that the next pope will be from a third world country. But I think we're more likely to see a pope from Latin America before an African pope. The largest Catholic population in the world is there with something like 90-95% of all Christians being Catholic.

A few years ago in an interview, they asked Pope Benedict XVI (when he was still Cardinal Ratzinger) what he thought about the possibility of an African Pope, and he said there was no problem with it among the cardinals, though he was'nt sure how such a Pope would be received in Europe.

Personally, while I hoped Ratzinger would have been chosen, my second preference was for Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria, and actually for a few years now, I thought he would have been the one to be elected.

I'm honestly very frightened about this new pope. :?:

I was hoping that the Brazilian or Nigerian cardinal would be elected, as they both are dedicated to helping the downtrodden, which is important to me since my mother is very poor.. However, this seems to be a transitional pope who just cares about doctrine.. Hopefully he'll prove himself to be more like JPII, but we will have to wait and see..... Hopefully, God will work in this situation....

An anti-homosexual is a homophobe and by definition that means someone who hates homosexuals. The Pope is not anti-homosexual and neither are Catholic teachings. What you mean to say is that we do not approve of a homosexual lifestyle.

An article I read in TIME said he was known as the panzerkardinal in Germany for being so tough. I am glad he is so conservative; it does no good to say "peace and love" and preach a false Christ. I do worry that he might not balance being tough with being gentle, which is one reason why I think Pope John Paul II was so well-respected even by those who disagreed with him.

He has his pastoral side, but you wouldn't know that from the News. He was considered a moderate before his being put in charge of the CDF. Nowadays he's considered archconservative because he believes that the truth that Jesus Christ proclaimed is true always and moral truths do not become "out of date" or "depending on the situation". People should be aware that the people who called him medieval and rigid were also the ones who were teaching heresy and were told to either modify what they taught or stop teaching-- hardly unreasonable for a religious group to require that the people who profess to represent the group to teach what is actually believed.

People don't realize it, but he was one of the major influences among the German bishops during Vatican II (he was an official theological advisor), and it could be accurately said that he knows more about the teachings of Vatican II than the critics who say he's turning his back on it (an old and innacurate accusation) and probably more about Vatican II than anyone currently alive.

And as for the news speculation about this being a transitional pope (which I suspect is 'wishful thinking' on the part of those opposed to him, I find myself wondering: wouldn't it be ironic if God decides he'll live to be 100?
