Halo is the most overrated piece of crap I have ever played.

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

Huh. Played Goldeneye on an emulator... Must say that everyone has their distinct tastes. Probably would have been a little more fun if I wasn't so anti-Bond. It's mostly his lack of morals...

Was'sname, the one we had for the PS, was just sick... okay, so the game was fair, but the intro was just sick.
Take it like you gave it; what else matters in the end? To be honest, it's all a one-shot test; that leaves plenty of places to go wrong, but how will you ever know? There's a pointer, I will admit. Turn it on, listen to it, feel it burn.

well, i have played halo a couple of times in multiplayer with friends in capture the flag, to tell you the truth part of the reason why i wasn't impressed was due to the fact that i was able to take down my friends so easily when all i had was the basic pistol, and a good trigger finger of course, although i kept on overheating the gun like a madman, so that made things a bit of a drag for me, but oh well, i still say the original jedi knight game rules, saber duels, fps, and force manipulation, now that is combat

heh, the pistol is the most accurate gun in the game!

Yes, I'm joking. Halo rocks.

No, its Halo and Halo 2 that are way overated. Golden Eye had great gameplay for a FPS, Halo did not. Golden Eye was fun, Halo wasn't.

Huh. I've never played Goldeneye. However, I remember when that was, like, THE game, Goldeneye tournaments being played late into the night and all...

Never played the first Halo. Probably never will. For that reason, I really like Halo 2. I can't say, "Oh, it's the same as the first one," because I've never played the first one. So I think it's pretty fun, especially when I got to hop into that Scorpion tank and blast the living crap out of everything. That ROCKED.

And multiplayer is really fun too, though I'm still a n00b and I get wasted a lot even in Training mode.

Those tanks. Something about the vehicles turn a shooter into a wargame, which, IMO, is much fun.

Sorry, W4J, if something I've said seems a bit too assumptive. In my humble little circles and my very own personal opinion, to which I believe I am entitled, I personally preferred Halo/2 If you prefer Goldeneye, then more power to you.

I will confess one thing: Halo and co were overrated. It's true. Then again, it's an XBox thing. Peter Molynuex's Fable was overrated so bad, it actually hurt the game. If you expected something totally awesome that would drag you into the depths and completely away from real life, you lost. Of course it would seem overrated. If you just want something to kill...

I guess I'll answer the question to the people dislike/get bored by Halo of why Halo is such a great game. No, I'm not saying that since Halo is a great game, everyone will love it. Everyone has different tastes, even down to types shooters (unless, you dislike shooters all together). I'm not trying to convert you…. just shed light on why all of us crazy Halo people like Halo so much.

(Note: I'm not talking about Halo 2, here. Halo 2 is almost a different beast.)

In short terms, immersion. I just really got sucked into the game world. Sure, it's not atmospheric like Metroid Prime, but I still felt sucked into the world. That is what video games are about, right? Well, to me it is. -Losing yourself in a world for a short time. Just like a book or movie.

So, why did I find the game, immersive?

1. The AI and enemies. Hands down this was the best FPS AI during its time and it still is some of the best. Between the X-box and PC versions, I've play through Halo *seriously counts* eight times. Rarely has the AI acted the same.

Even though, you play as this armored super-warrior, I still feel this sense of desperation on Heroic mode as my back is to the wall. Now, if you’re playing the game on easy, you’re not going to experience the real potential of this AI. Don’t be afraid to die.

2. Freedom of how to fight. Most FPS games have levels with diversions like item hunts, boss fights, or cliff jumping. Halo throws that out and gives you open-ended battle. This leads to a nice blend of run 'n gun action and strategy. The gameplay is just built so well to take advantage of this, giving the player many options and making the game click.

3. Weapons.
First of all, the two weapons at a time system was a nice touch. Even though, this wasn’t a popular thing then. It something you’d normally find in a Tom Clancy game, not a Sci-fi shoot-out.

The weapons are also very well balanced. It’s not like the typical shooter were you are constantly upgrading to better weapons, making the previous ones obsolete. Pretty much all the weapons have it’s own strengths and weaknesses.

4. Vehicles.
Come on, it’s fun to chase down those aliens with the Warthog!

A nice thing Halo did was smooth the transition of entering a vehicle and changing the view from first person to third.

5. Sound. The sound in this game is nothing short of excellent. The game has an excellent soundtrack that boosts the drama of the combat.

6. Grenades. I know the Halo fans that read this are smiling now. The game just has some of the most effective and enjoyable grenade action in a game. Instead of scrolling threw your list of weapons, Halo lets you simply toss a grenade on the fly with a pull of the left trigger or click of the right mouse button.

Since Master Chief is an “uber soldatâ€

actaully ive heard Halo ported to the PC stank really badly

This leads to a nice blend of run 'n gun action and strategy.

exactally why I don't like Halo =p The only strategy I saw was "oh, pikc up that snipr rifle and hide in that tower"

And Halo lacked weapons, it was like... 1 of each type for both races or something

I have to admit I'm not fond of the "cheater" weapons as I refer to them...the sniper rifle, rocket launcher and the energy sword. But I generally say that because I get smashed every time someone good grabs those. I just dont' think it requires skill to use those weapons. Sometimes on Live, the person to win is the one who's nearest those weapons and can grab them first. That's not skill, yo. That's the only thing that really irritates me about the gameplay on LIVE, anyway.

Not exactly, I own the PC version and it runs perfectly fine, but I do own a high-end system. :P That’s the only problem with the port, it’s not friendly with a slower machine.

Sniper rifle doesn't always work]And Halo lacked weapons, it was like... 1 of each type for both races or something[/QUOTE]

Why do you need tons of weapons in every game? The weapons were balanced in Halo. Each was good on its own right. Which added more strategy to the game. Sure, the needier had limited uses, but it still was very useful if used right.

You just have to think. Should I crash the warthog in the group of aliens? Soften them with the chain gun from out of their range? Drive around them in strafing runs having the marines in the back picking them off? Wreck the Warthog in front of the aliens, use it as cover, toss a bunch of grenades, keep suppressed with the machine gun, and then clean up the stragglers before they regroup? Pick off the weak ones with the pistol and then move in guns ‘a blazin’?

yes, but if you die you could always restart that same level... (cause its a campaign and all) Unlike something such as Day of Defeat... where you have once chance at that time to get things right

what i meant was it had only 1 kind of human pistol, only 1 automatic gun, only 1 this, only one that. I mean id perfer having a multiple selection of those which are automatic (like should I grab the p90, or the ak-47? perhaps the mac-10.... or maybe even the mp5 or the UMP) or something like a pistol (should I buy the five-seven... or maybe the desert eagle? Maybe stick to the glock?) I mean you have a wide selection of various types of guns... and each have major differences. And you utalize what you feel you would work best with in the given situation (i dont even mean which type of gun... but what type of gun within that type. You got 4 sniper rifles to choose from, but are you better off with speed and silence? or an semi-auto sniperrifle to take down multiple targets fast? Are you just covering fire or trying to take out the whole team?

And the sniper in halo... was so weird... the bullet didn't move as fast as it should... i mean im shooting a guy and the crosshair circle turns red... and i fire.. and he just walks away... and he's not even really far from me... plus you can see the line of the bullet firing... bad enginnering of a sniperrifle if ya ask me :P the point of a sniperrifle is to remain undetected... but seeing that line lets you opponent know where you are

generally, i don't like "spacey" futuristic shooters, and i perfer more realistic types (aka cs, day of defeat, etc) unless its something like starwars

And what’s exactly wrong with not having that? That would bring a lot of frustration to Halo’s legendary mode then most can bear. Halo’s no real-life simulation or ever was meant to be.. you are fighting aliens after all. Nevertheless, Halo can be a strategic and twitch challenge if you set it to the right difficulty.

That’s kinda’ hard to do for a Sci-fi shooter. Modern/Historic shooters have the luxury of choosing from a huge variety of firearms with complete statistical information.

That was for balance on the multiplayer. If the sniper rifle shot faster and didn’t at least give a hint of it’s location, it would be the ultimate weapon in Halo.

Well, I can’t change your taste on shooters there. I pretty much like them all, as long as it’s a good game in general. :)

they COULD of made it MUCH harder to use.... like MUCH harder to aim... and a little bit weaker in exchange for a faster bullet

im saying cause in DoD, its humans players against human players, and if you don't get you main objective done, it could cost you the mission. In CS, you could have a number of choices (where to go, where to hide, what to use, use a flashbang gernade and o out and shoot him, or use an HE frag gernade, etc) but what you do is costly. The same exact situation won't happen again for quite sometime. It's different everytime because you're against Human players, not an AI (plus its based on rounds, its not a campaign)
