Downloading music...?

Postby ShiroiHikari » Sun Jun 01, 2003 9:05 pm

I was wondering what everyone's feelings are on downloading music.

Four reasons why I download music:

1) To preview stuff before I buy it so I don't waste what little money I have on something that looked interesting, but ended up sucking. (Whatever happened to demo versions that you could listen to in the store anyway???)
2) Because I can't buy it in the United States without paying out the nose.
3) For temporary use until I have the money to buy the CD.
4) Because the copy of the CD that I already paid money for was lost or damaged.

Well, lemme know what y'all think...::sits back::

Yeah, cds are kind of expensive, dont know why either, i mean they only cost a couple cents to make, I agree with your 4 rules, I download music, but really i dont know of too many people who wouldn't just buy the cd that they like when they could, who wouldn't like the real cd over the burned one anyway?

I use Kazaa to download stuff. I think it's a useful way of finding out about new music... for example recently I found out about a Japanese group called Boom Boom Sattelites throught the program - their album is now on my shopping list.

So in this way, the music industry has benefitted from me illegally downloading their copyrighted material... kinda weird really. I'd liken using kazaa in this way to listening to the radio. This might sound dodgy, but you can't perfectly abide by the law. Here's an example - did you know that if you play copyrighted music in a public place (such as a church building) you are breaking the law?

I think it gets unethical if you don't buy the music that you downloaded and liked.

Also, I'd suggest getting into indie:

You know, that radio thing...that's a very good point. Very good. And I didn't know that playing music in a public place was against the law...o.O;

And yeah, it's kind of wrong to just DL a whole album, burn it, and never buy it. X( I have friends that do that. Makes me so mad!

It's true...I've heard that too. Totally illegal. They want you to pay for a license or whatever you'd call it because it would be like a concert sort of thing. They sure wouldn't want other people listening in when they haven't paid to...

I like to download music a lot...sometimes I buy the cds...sometimes I dont. This is not bragging...but when you have like 250 cds...(have not counted in a while) I cant affoard to buy them all. So :shrug: I just dl what I want. I don't really care about copyright laws. Yup, I tape movies on tv, i tape football games...and I even sometimes burn cds for friends. I AM THE DEVIL!:dance: <---dancing to all his burned music.

Wow, old thread...

Anyway, links to most download places (except places such as OCRemix) aren't allowed here. (obviously I'm not pointing this at you, Shiroi...XD)
