Crest of the Hidden Stars

Postby kingoleer » Tue Oct 21, 2003 2:55 pm

Hey, I saw this anime, Crest of the Hidden Stars, wonder if anyone else had seen it? IT looks pretty good but I'm not sure what episode I saw or what, it was on Tek TV and of course next time I went to watch it Boogie Pop Phantom was on instead.

Don't know anything about this anime but I would love to see it again....IF anyone has seen it tell me about it, what you liked about it, a little of the background on the story if you could.....seems to me like it was about this planet and these aliens who came to it from another planet they had destroyed....I'm not real sure.

Anyway, any help in this would be appreciated. Thanks!!

First off, it's "Crest of the Stars" if you're going by the NA (canadian) title... I saw CotS, Lain, Boogiepop, Dual, Most of silent mobius, Gatekeepers 21, and like 3 eps of betterman (eew) and must say that TechTV has a nice selection for people who aren't into the same stuff that CN shovels as the examples of ALL anime...

CotS, the first anime they showed, was decent. The dub was horrible, but not the worst one around. The story was slow, quite a change from the anime many TV anime fans were used to from CN. It was a nice series but not the best. It wasn't about any planet, it was a broad-narrow scope of

1. Broad: The war between the Abh and a certain group of humans.
2. Narrow: Lafiel and Jinhto and their part in the much bigger happenings... It balanced the broad and narrow quite well because if it would have focused too much on the broad part of the story, I would have stopped watching it.

There is nothing spectacular or particularly climactic about the show. It had a plot and a danger, but it was pretty casual the whole way through. It doesn't require too much thought, but I'd venture to say the story is way too subdued for many people. Not as subdued as, say, My Neighbor Totoro, but pretty subdued nonetheless.

Lain showed after that, and was also subdued but unlike CotS had QUITE a climactic point... That's another thread, though.

Out of curiosity, what was the sequal to COTS called? I vaguly recall one of my friends telling me it was hidden something. That may be what he's talking about. I can't say I know much about the dub, as I watched the whole thing subbed, but that was cool.

CotS (dub) is pretty good. Story line and all. I think the sequal is called Banner of the Stars, but I saw different in a synopsis for the series, so I'll go with what I've heard; it just might be right.

Banner of the Stars or Battleflag of the stars, among other things... CotS fans have a lot of arguments over titles and names... (lamirh for lafiel, etc...)

I must say, if you can, watch it subtitled... The dialogue isn't nearly as bumpy in Japanese.

Alright. I will add the sub to my list . On the name, I probably heard BattleFlag. It somehow sounds vaguely familiar.

Things pick up a lot in Banner of the Stars (I've seen up to vol. 3). It's a decent series.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

TechTV didn't dub it. Though that one guy sure does sound like the TechTV announcer! But, yeah, I don't know why so many people said this. TechTV doesn't have the resources or money to do something like that, especially not just for putting it on TV. That dub was made before TechTV was TechTV, let alone before they had AU.

The first Banner of the Stars series is on three DVD volumes (which have all been released), Technomancer, so you have seen the whole thing. However, there is a second Banner of the Stars series (which is technically the third Crest of the Stars series) which is simply named Banner of the Stars II. It's the shortest of the three series out (only 10 episodes in three volumes, though the last volume is supposed to have a special OVA on it). Volumes 1 and 2 of Banner of the Stars II are out now and the third volume is coming out on December 2nd. All of the volumes of the other two series are out now (Crest of the Stars is in a 4 disc Perfect Collection brick and Banner of the Stars I is a three disc DVD release).

BTW, Banner of the Stars I is coming to Tech TV in November. It's a 13 episode series like the first series.

The group that dubbed Crest of the Stars is the Ocean Group. Their dubs are of mixed quality. They have some good dubs and some lousy ones. They are also infamous for dubs that start out poor and get much better, a process known as "Ocean lag".

TV Networks are almost never responsible for dubs, so please don't blame them for poor dubs. TV networks do edit some shows, but they are not in charge of dubbing them.

I've seen most of Crest of the Stars, pretty good but has a lot of fanservice

for the record: the sequel is called BANNER of the Stars, and the series after that is called Banner of the Stars II, and the series after that is called Lost Chapter of the Stars - Birth
