Friend's boyfriend in ICU after seizure

Postby Rogie » Tue Mar 22, 2005 8:05 pm

Please pray for my friend Chrissy's boyfriend, Andy, who had a seizure and is now in ICU. He was trying to start his vehicle, but couldn't remember how to turn the key and then just blacked out. Some people discovered him soon after because the vehicle was shaking and the horn was blowing (he was shaking that badly during the seizure).

He's now in ICU, and both he and Chrissy are stressing out over the situation (naturally). One doctor thinks he has meningitis, but another disagrees, so no one's sure what's wrong. He may not be able to drive for six months, either, although I'm not entirely sure of the driving situation overall. Thank God that he didn't have the seizure while driving, though.

Anyway, please pray for Andy and Chrissy in dealing with this, as well as the work that they have due in school. Chrissy going to classes, working on projects (including one with me), and trying to stay with Andy in the hospital, so this is going to get hard on her quickly. Andy's parents also had to come to the area to see him now, so remember them, as well.

Thanks, everyone!

To be perfectly honest, it sounds like he just plain seized. He'll need the lumbar puncture to rule out meningitis, and probably an EEG, but it sounds like seizure disorder.

It's still not a nice diagnosis to have. :(

That doesn't sound good, then. I'll ask Chrissy tomorrow if they found out anything. All I know right now is that he's out of ICU, which is good news.

Keep in mind that a seizure per se isn't life threatening (unless he doesn't come out of it, and even a 'brief' [30-45 sec] seizure can still seem like forever). People can still lead relatively normal lives.

And sometimes a long period of time goes by between one seizure and the next. Is that right, Dr. Shoo?

It can, even in untreated people, but it wouldn't be wise to bank on it.

Other people can sometimes come off of medications after a while, but that's the neurologist's prerogative and only with a negative EEG and no other problems.

Well, good news: he's out of the hospital now. I don't know what the doctors finally decided he had, but it was good that he got out of the hospital. Chrissy said something about a red line up one arm from the IV (that his veins were poisoned, I think), and then blisters came up around the IV when they switched it to the other arm. The doctor snapped the tape of his arm, and the blisters came off with it, which was quite painful. (Sorry if this makes little sense, as I was confused, too).

Anyway, praise God he's out now, and Chrissy appreciates the prayers. Oh, and Shoo, they did do an EEG and other tests, but I haven't talked with her since his release. But it sounds like he'll be okay. She said that it was once suggested that the seizure occurred due to a viral infection; is that possible?

Thanks for your prayers, everyone, and please continue to remember Andy.

Yes, you could get it from a viral meningitis. As long as the EEG is negative, there's nothing else to do with it once it gets better.

Oh, okay, I guess Chrissy meant something viral other than meningitis (???). Oh, well. He's doing a lot better, and they did give him medicine "for life," as Chrissy put it, so it was obviously what you said, Shoo: a seizure disorder.

That bites. I hate seizures. Sounds like he had a grand mal. (sp?)

I'll keep him in my prayers.
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone
And so hold on when there is nothing left in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!' ...you'll be a Man, my son!
