And the cartridge still costs a lot of money.

A lot of money? soooo.. Majesco is taking a huge hit by making those GBA video things for $20 and still manages to increase their profit margin significantly. As for the FMV in Kingdom Hearts.. they looked to be PS2 quality without the blockyness of the software decoded Gameboy advance Video. Link to come Here

Anyways, They need to get some actual.. games for the PSP, most all the games being made for the PSP look like ports of PS2. I noticed that Mistwalker (the studio formed by some former Square developers) is only making games for the DS.. Now, excuse me for asking.. but if the PSP is a "developers dream" why are they developing only for the DS?

[rant]
Oh wait.. innovation in gameplay. Balance of battery life and graphical prowess, NO LOADING TIMES. Wireless single cart multiplay.. Yes the PSP looks cool, yes the games look nice.. but if I want a system to pick up and play during my lunch break.. I don't want to spend a quarter of it in loading screens.

I look at it this way, when Nintendo came out with the Game Boy Color, it was said that they had the technology long before. Why did they hold it back? Battery Life. Following the same thread of thinking, why is it that the big N didn't release a GBA:Evolution now? Battery life and loading times maybe?

Yes, PSP may grab a chunk of the market. Yes PSP will hit their niche PS2 players. But at the current price tag for the system, plus the price tag for the quality games? Is ~$290 worth it to play games you can play at home, on a larger screen, with better graphics for about ~$100 less? The current market of casual gamers may look at the price tag and back away. They may decide that paying ~$190 on a lesser system that is more game based than jack-of-all-trades and a quality game is a better use of their money.

Oh, and FMV is somewhat overused anyways, example Xenosaga. (4 hour DVD going over just the first one's story x_x)

i think the PSP will flop mostly beacuse of the price (who wants to pay $250 for it).also i think there are some other flaws in it (like the 4 hour battery life for example).also if its as fragile as the PS2 is that could be another huge problem and there doesnt seem to be a lot of good games coming out for it another problem i see is the dics that means loading times and maybe skipping if you bump it to hard

well thats my 2 cents anyways

the $250 price is for the "value pack," the base system will probably cost $180.

OK... Pretty much everything you need to know about the PSP can be found here:

If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things."

And it has a 6 hour battery life not 4.

I'll go through this point by point.

Point 1: Cost of Cartriges\quality of FMV. You got me there.. it IS "Expensive" however you did not address how Majesco (the makers of Game boy advance video) were still able to triple their quarterly revenue using these 'expensive' carts. You make it sound like they lost money on every cart they sold. I could say the same thing about quality about the PSP's UMD videos, blown up it'd also look bad. You did not however address how that looked for the size. It was NOT sprites on a static background.

Point 2: Ports
Agreed. Completely new games for DS are few, but include Another Code, Meteos, Egg Monster Heros, and Feel the Magic to name a few.
Lack of RPGs? try Baiten Kaitos, Shin Megumi Tensei, a Xenosaga, A spinoff of square named Windwalker (I think) is developing an as of yet unamed Tactical RPG; and is only developing for the DS. Final Fantasy III (Yes, a port.. of an NES game.) All these DS exclusives.

Point 3: Innovation/battery life. Care to explain my "Loading time" thing? Ridge Racer looks great, however you spend 20 seconds loading just to start it up (not to mention the ingame loading times). And well.. if I'm near an electrical socket, why am I playing a portable system.. it's portable for a reason. I lose all reason to have a Play Station Portable if I need to be plugged into a wall to play. For the $250 I'd have spent on the PSP.. to be plugged into a wall.. I could've gotten a PS2 with a larger screen and be watching the DVDs I want to watch, not the UMDs that Sony released.
Oh, and the battery life being forgivable.. maybe if they weren't already a major electronics producer. Sony make laptops for goodness sakes, seems like they'd be lightyears ahead of Nintendo in the battery department. But instead they offer.. battery expansions. O_o

But this is majorly off topic.

[on topic]
You can no longer reserve PSPs at Gamestop.

lol, so we're mostly agreed then. I think that Nintendo will make a switch to disks on their handhelds once they get battery life and loading time caught up.

Not really...actually, Sony owned over 20% of Squaresoft's stock at the time, which is why they developed pretty much exclusively for Sony.

In fact, if I remember my sources correctly, FF7 was originally supposed to be for N64.

I agree with Volt on this...have you seen a lot of the games for GBA? Most of them were SNES ports. Same with DS, there's a lot of ports for that too. I think mainly it's because ports are easier to make at first, since most of the coding is taken care of. That way, they can have a game base when the system is released, and work on making original games later.
GameCube has discs, but the loading times are extremely short, I'm curious as to how they're doing this.
Because the CDs are small. :P

I honestly think that's the reason. The laser doesn't have to go as far to obtain information, resulting in shorter loading times.

Though I will also agree with your smart programming comment as well.

Two games, (one launch, one announced) do not 'a lot of ports' make. Unless you count sports games.. But I will agree that it is easier to make ports when a system is starting out.

Then why are loading times longer on UMDs? More data maybe?

Not true. Gamecube discs to tend to spin pretty fast during loading, but aside from that, they do the same thing as XBox and PS2. Heck, after I load it up for the first time, I can pop out Animal Crossing entirely because it's all in the GAmecube's RAM.

But actually, that's only half-true. Nintendo also picked that size disc because it makes Gamecube games more difficult to pirate. :P

Umm, you will need a Japanese PSP to play an import of Advent Children. The PSP's UMD movies are region encoded like DVDs.

I heard that as well, that Sony was attempting to change the battery to a lithium ion battery, which would give it 10+ hours. Whether this is true or not, who knows, but it would certainly be nice and make the PSP worth a second look in this gamer's eyes.
