Do video game consoles damage televisions?

I think the topic is pretty much sufficient, but what I'm asking is this: I've heard that games can burn pictures onto television screens, so I'm reluctant to hook my consoles up to the new tv. Does anyone have proof to the contrary?

I think that's the case only with plasma and projection TVs, and that's only when the game stays on one image for a prolonged amount of time....someone correct me if there's any fallacy in that statement.

you only really have to worry about burn in with a plasma screen, it can happen in less than an hour while a projection takes a much longer time. Although both types are also susceptible to dimming problems that can be caused by either the backlit bulbs wearing out or any number of other components permanently becoming damaged over time, and the only solution to that is a completely new unit.

right, on a regular television you'd have to leave the game on pause for a looong time to damage it. but on projection TVs (aka the old-school big screens), you have to really be careful.

I don't have plasma or projection TVs, I think... What do they call the ones that most people have? (Forgive my ignorance, please.)

I just call them regular CRTs.

CRT screens are becoming obsolete. Most new TV's are flat screen now.

You can get CRT flat screens... unless you were referring to TFT. From what I understand, they still give the best picture HD wise, though are most limited by size...

Anyway, for the main question, this usually refers to still pictures and not moving images. If you were planning to step away for awhile, you might be well served to turn off the TV...

CRTs are not obsolete. As AnimeHeretic said, CRTs have the best picture -- but that's because they have superior colour fidelity. When I went to buy my new monitor, I bought a flat CRT so I could have the benefits of a non-warped display, but still have the colour display power of a CRT. Even today's best LCDs (and for that matter plasma screens) still have comparatively anaemic palettes.

That's what I did. I have a 19" flat CRT for a price that might have got me a 15" LCD. I don't like the LCDs too much as they tend to go blocky when viewing mpeg at a different resolution-- plus the dead pixel problem...
