Expensive water damage, now occurring

We recently had a leak in our family room roof. Along with that, there was light brown on part of the ceiling that reacted with Lysol, a few small bubbles under the paint on the outer wall, and damp carpet which probably had mold. My mom is very allergic to mold and knows before the rest of us if it is around.

The other week, the top layer of our roof over our family room blew off and what remains went back, but we do have a few pieces laying around the yard that we managed to gather up. Part of our roof has tarps over it. Repairing it is probably at least a $1,200 job. It was already financially tight and my parents don’t exactly have $1,200 laying around to fix things like that. I am told that the insurance company, which has no record of being prompt to help us fix our home, has been “operating in the red.” My dad was thinking of sending the first write-up of the estimate as $900 to the insurance, rather than getting a re-write to turn it.

It’s raining. The news last night showed a huge area on the Doppler where a storm would be moving over. It’s not always intense, but it’s big, and might last a bit. The breeze was blowing up a tarp(s). My mom has a couple of her canes now hanging on the ends of the tarp at the edge of the house. One of us, (hopefully not me) left the sliding glass door not quite latched. The carpet be the door is soaked-it even makes that squishy wet sound when stepped on with sneakers over the towel there. One spot was looking darker, so mom put bleach on it in case it was mold. Mom has like six towels out on the floor, another set in the washer, and another in the dryer. She took the wet curtains down. She has been up most of the night. There seem to be water bubbles under that paint of the family room wall with the door and mom mentioned the concern that the plasterboard of the wall might have to be redone. Mold is not covered by our insurance.

I guess what this comes down to is:

No mold damage or if there is, then as little as possible and easy/inexpensive to repair is such exists.
Protection of the wall so that none of it has to be redone
Fast drying of the carpet
No breeze (or at least as little as possible) that will kick up the tarps
If there is any chance that a lot of the rain could avoid us, that would be great, but unexpected.

Wow. I come from a desert state, so I don't really have any idea what any of that really means, but it sounds bad. I'll pray for you guys.

It may come down to a new wall and a new carpet paid for by my parents and maybe a little for the roof from the insurance company
