Oekaki Closed

Postby Ashley » Sun Jan 30, 2005 4:13 pm

The time has come where we must announce the closing of the oekaki here. It had been a thorn in the staff's side for some time now, as it was incredibly difficult to moderate; especially since few of our members were participating and most of the activity was from outside (and in some cases clearly not-Christian) sources. If we can find a way to tie membership to CAA members ONLY, we may consider bringing it back but for now it is no longer here. I do apologize to those of you who did enjoy it, but unfortunately the benefits severely underweighed the cons.

the pictures haven't been completely deleted, right? I know that some people are gonna want the ability to save their work if they haven't already.

Perhaps you could use a system that restricts use of the oekaki to those who have at least 100 posts or something...
I know of some VB forums that only let members have an avatar if they have more than 20 posts.
Perhaps it's possible to do something like this with the oekaki. I wouldn't know how to do that, but maybe it's possible.

At the moment, there's no present way to integrate the user lists, let alone user attributes like post count, so we weren't able to restrict it.

Also, because of the software the oekaki used, many of us were unable to moderate it even if we wanted to (browser incompatibilities).

If these technical problems could be overcome, it may be reintroduced in the future, but for the foreseeable time, it will remain closed.

Sorry FRWL, I'm pretty sure it's gone for good. Besides, the numbers get re-used anyway, and most people who work on oekakis save their work because of that. And Kev, the Oekaki was some kind of plug-in...so I'm not sure how much we can tamper with it, but it is a nice idea. We'd also have to heavily modify it to make it easier to admin.

And to be realistic, we have much more severe and pressing problems to deal with right now than the oekaki, so this isn't exactly top priority. And nor will it be anytime soon.

I have a simple question: Will this save on bandwidth?

Most likely. You would not believe the outside sources/hits we were getting, and from a large number of people who were not even CAA members. I'm sure it will definately make a huge ding in the count.

An oekaki board, put in its simplist terms, is a set of message boards that you can draw pictures on. You don't upload the pictures to it; you draw them right onto the boards. ...I think. (I've never actually used one myself, though we have one at Anime Angels that I've seen... ^_^; )

I do indeed believe it. I've looked at the Anime Angels oekaki board a few times and there are plenty of regular posters there who don't even post on the message boards. I'm kind of glad to report that in the new layout both the oekaki board and the guestbook will be no more. (I've mentioned in one Goof Off thread I had going about the evil spam robots that keep hitting the guestbook.)

We are sorry that it has to be this way. We enjoy offering fun things like oekaki and the arcade and such, but this is the way we had to go. If you guys do find another clean oekaki (I'm sure there's one out there somewhere) then please be kind enough to let the other members who frequented the oekaki boards here know about it. Thanks for your understanding!

Hmm, since there seems to be some people who'd still like to use it, Cal and I got to talking this morning about adding an oekaki to the Guild. If it works out like we want it to, CAA members will be welcome there...:) and if we can manage, it will be screened so not just anyone can come in and post, just CAA and Guild members. But it hasn't come off yet...^^;; I'll post here if it does.

Well, we went ahead and added the oekaki...:) If anyone would like to come to the site and use it, head on over to http://www.guildofredeemedgamers.com or let me know and I'll get you a password to get in. We probably don't have all the bugs worked out...so bear with us...XD
