well, I don't know what blender is, but the best site for free modeling stuff in my opinion is http://www.3dcafe.com

oops... forgot that most of the best stuff is only if you get a montly subscription... It's a lot of money, but what you can do is get it one month (making sure you don't auto-renew) and just download everything they got... They have some expert level tutorials and a lot of models that you can study...

I've heard good things about all the software I listed in the poll, If you find one to better than the others could you tell me why?

Has any one heard of Moonlight Atelier or pov-ray? I've worked some with pov-ray, but I didn't like how it was setup. I didn't like the fact taht you had to learn somthing like a programing language to anything with it.

Could some one please tell me how to get python to work with blender in suse 7.3?

POV-RAY is a great renderer, but you really need a sidecar modeler to generate the .pov files (otherwise, yeah, you're basically learning a programming language).

I used POV-Ray some, but it was a little out of my grasp since like you I didn't want to learn a programming language (not to say it wasn't good software; I honestly didn't use any of it enough to give an informed opinion). You definitely need a modeler to go with it, but I wouldn't know what to recommend, since it's been years since I messed with any of it...

Well, POVRay is a Raytracer... which is a different animal from something like Blender (least, when I looked at it last). Blender is more like some of the more popular tools (3D Studio Max, that one that Pixar uses.. Mira?).

I've done a bit with POVRay, but to do complex things it helps to have a modeler and such... the learning curve is rather high for it too. POV is more solids based where many of the others are Mesh based, that makes a difference too.

The POVRay site has a good collection of links for all sorts of stuff, many of which aren't necessarilly POV related.

I hear Maya is pretty rad. I've really only used Rhino, which is what we have at school.

I learned (well, sorta) 3dsmax at college... But I plan on going to Full Sail (someday... when I get the credit to get the loans...) which uses Maya... Maya is sorta close to 3dsmax. It's also about twice as much money...

My teacher said the difference between the big modeling programs is mostly asthetic... Usually the cost difference is in what features are included. In order to do this professionally, you have to buy plugins that are often more money than the base programs... I saw one 3ds max plugin that cost 9000 dollars... The only programs I've used are Soft Image, 3ds Max, and Maya (demos and educational versions...)
