Phantom of the Opera

I went to see the movie last week and it was pretty enjoyable. I particularly liked the masquerade ball. However I also agree with Mangafanatic about the first encounter between the Phantom and Christine though.
Plus, although this has nothing to do with the actual storyline, I noticed two things in the movie:
[spoiler]During the 'Don Juan' sequence, one of the dancers is late on doing his turn. I not completely sure but I think in a shot of Christine from behind when she had the wedding dress on, she didn't have her bridal crown thingy on her head when she was supposed to.[/spoiler]

Like I said, not important to the story just something I noticed. Depending on what extras they have, I might buy this movie when it goes on DVD.

I didn't like it. WAaaah. Funny thing is ALW picked Gerard Butler himself...and the poor guy can't sing, really, just hold a tune...even his MOM was surprised he got the role.

The Phantom wasn't ugly. He's supposed to be. But he wasn't that ugly.

The phantom lair sequence with the candles in the water didn't have the same punch as the musical did.

wHile visually beautiful, the musical didn't translate well onto the screen. It had no driving force that a movie should have...instead it was like an overlong music video. It appears that ALW wanted driver's seat even though he wasn't the director...the movie should have been an expansion of the musical, not a filmed copy. Besides, instead of being a serious, dramatic scene, it's kind of absurd to see Raoul tied up, the Phantom threatening to kill him and Christine pleading for him to let him go, and they're all singing about it.

On the upside...

Costumes were great, Frenc accents all in place...

there was a swordfight. Yay. Swordfight.

Minnie Driver (as Carlotta) was a gem, as always.

I totally agree. With a mask that small, I didn't think his disfiguration would be that ugly looking and the movie only confirmed my skepticism.

just saw it friday night, and thoroughly enjoyed it. i had to laugh since i went with a bunch of girls from my dorm, and had to hear fangirl ravings about how handsome/cute/and so on Raoul and Phantom were... all night.

but there were some bummers - the Phantom was just not all that deformed... in the book he has yellowish skin and only 4 dreadlocks of hair, or something like that, a far cry from Gerard Butler. - Butler's voice was more suited to singing in a rock band (which i think he does) than an opera-esque musical. - some of the acting was just not movie style acting, more stage acting.

but it was beautiful artistically, the costumes were gorgeous, overall, the music was good, and Minnie Driver did a fantastic job as La Carlotta (she also sang the song in the ending credits herself, but did not sing in the movie itself).

now i really want to go see the stage musical even more.

I probably won't see it as that subject isn't that interesting to me, but I do kind of disapprove of a very popular (edit: I said poopular, ohhh dear) theatrical play being turned into a movie. The theatre might lose a lot of money. Then again there might be more PoO ( , that sounds and looks really goofy) fans so they might make more money...................

I loved the musical version I saw way before the movie a whole lot better.
