(ok let's try this again) GIFT IDEAS

Ok, I don't know what happened to my last thread but here we go again:

Hello all, Golden_Griff here :)

I haven't done ANY Christmas shopping yet, and it's mostly due to the fact that I don't know what to get for anybody. However, I'm 99% sure that my brother will be getting a PS2 this Christmas. So I'm thinking of getting a game for him. At least that'll be one person taken care of on my list :eyeroll:

If I know my brother as well as I think I know him, these are the types of games that he likes:

  • wrestling (I'm pretty sure he'll get Smackdown vs. Raw from somebody)
  • sports (namely football and basketball, but maybe football more)
  • fighting (Marvel vs. type games)
  • racing (like Crusin World)

He's had his share of adventure/action games but as far as I can tell, he's not that fond of them. I'm not quite sure what genre it is but he played Metal Gear Solid for the PSone before.

Right now, I'm thinking of X-Men Legends, or some kind of football game. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Gran Turismo is a good solid racing game. I bought It for myself. Quit enjoyable.

I don't know if your family is ok with shooters but Killzone is an exellent game as far as gameplay and graphics go. You just might want to skip the cutsescense, I didn't know you could use those words in a game :mutter:

The .hack games are a great set of RPGs if you like anime. I enjoyed them. They are a bit quirky in there own way, but I would recomend them.

Also I have heard many a good thing about Metal Gear Solid 3. One of my co-workers adores this game.

A series I will always recomend is Armored Core. Particulaly Armored Core Nexus. I got this game and its great. Its a mecha piloting game. You can build your own machine and pilot it in missions.

Anyway I hope you get more sugestions then mine. I haven't really gotten into to many ps2 games yet. But I hope this helps a little.

Hmm...*thinking*

Thank you for your feedback. I tried to peep at what games he was looking up today on gamefaqs.com. I think I saw some "Jak" titles on the screen ;) I'm leaning towards the X-Men Legends game though. I definitely saw that on the screen the other day.

Contrary to what I previously thought, my brother actually said that he wants to play adventure games but, in reference to the frustration he felt playing Super Mario 64 earlier today: "this is the reason why I don't play these kinds of games." :eyeroll:

Hmm...I wonder if he would like Jak...

X-Men: Legends is an excellent game. That would be a good choice, especially if he wants a game that he can play with more than 2 people.

I haven't played any of the Jak games, but I have heard that they are good. If you are looking for a cheap gift, the original Jak and Daxter is only $19.99 ;) .

Capcom vs. SNK 2 is a good fighting game that is similar to the Marvel vs. series (which is also available for the PS2).

If he wants and good racing game, I would recommend Burnout 3: Takedown. It isn't quite as realistic as Gran Turismo (although it is more realistic in some ways), but it does have more variety in the play modes.

As far as racing games, it depends on what you think you're brother would want. If he wants to pick from a huge number of cars, and learn about driving, get Gran Turismo 3. Best physics of any racing game, and hundreds of cars of all types to choose from. From a moral standpoint GT3 is one of the rare games that doesn't encourage you to race through traffic, see how hard you can crash, run from the cops, or to steal something.

If he just wants a fun racer with cars he likes from the Fast and the Furious, then Need For Speed Underground 2 would be the way to go. Physics are ok and you have a variety of cars to choose from. Plus you can change bodykits, graphics, and rims. Midnight Club 2 is also a pretty cool Fast and the Furious style game that has recieved some good reviews.

Auto Modelista is a pretty cool game. The physics are better than NFSU, but the game has a great cell-shaded look and you can make you car look exaclty how you want it. It's also one of the few games that lets you race on the tracks from Initial D.

I hope I gave you some ideas :)

If it's adventure....

Jak and Daxter was a great platformer, but I found it a little tedious. I love the presentation of the game (characters, setting, sound, and all), but the gameplay is still not much new from Mario 64. Not really a bad thing, but it makes the game lack originality. Now, I haven't played Jak II or III.... I'm kinda' a little annoyed by games taking a darker spin these days, but I’ll pick them up sometime in the future.

Personally, I recommend Ratchet and Clank, which I picked-up a little while back. It's a great and fun action/adventure/platforming game. I really don't any big complaints about the first game, except the game is pretty addicting. Like Jak, I haven't played the sequels, yet. I’ve only had a PS2 for under a year.

If he likes adventure games, he should enjoy either one. O'yeah, btw, both of the games are very forgiving compared to the Mario series (example; infinite lives).

Well guys, I decided to go with the X-Men Legends. For some reason, I didn't think it was still priced at $50 :eh: So I'm hoping he'll like it. Heh, I should have been cheap and bought the $20 Jak game :eyeroll: But I think this is the best bet.

Man, I'm just as excited as he is about getting the PS2. I can't wait to open up that box and giving my thumbs a work-out with Smackdown vs. Raw ( and X-Men too :eyeroll: ). The PS2 will be primarily my brother's but I'm going to have my own personal library of games as well ;)

Well, thanks for your help guys. I appreciate your feedback. I can't wait to see my brother's reaction when he opens my gift ;)

No it wasn't :shady: That was just the result of my computer misbehaving :shady: I got the infamous two-minute-before-refreshing screen and somehow I was still able to make a thread without posts.

Hmm, I think I saw him checking that game out the other day. Maybe I should have gotten him an adventure game instead. But I didn't feel sure enough to make that move. Ha, after buying that X-Men Legends he won't be getting anymore games from me for a long time :eyeroll:

Crap, I need to wrap his gift up at some point :eh: Maybe I'll do it tonight while everyone's sleeping ;) Oh I can't wait until Christmas! I'm more excited about seeing how everyone will react to the gifts I got them rather than what gifts I have :jump: But, I'm growing impatient to see what I have too :eyeroll:

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWW!!!

Surely enough, my brother got a PS2. :thumb:

I wanted to keep my gift a mystery until my brother saw the actual gift. So I disguised it in a bigger box. He was so surprised and happy that I got him the X-Men Legends game, he started singing Hulk Hogan's theme song  It just so happened that he planned to go get it this past Monday.

And I got a Gamecube!! *high fives the closest person in the room* I've finally managed to pull myself away long enough to return to CAA :eyeroll:
