All Quiet on the Narnia Front?

Postby bigsleepj » Mon Dec 20, 2004 3:11 am

Principal Photography for location filming in New Zealand has wrapped! The principal cast is back in England already. Now they have 12 months to edit, touch up and perfect the film and special effects for the Christmas 2005 release of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe."

My thoughts are: Wow, that was quick!

Just thought you should know.

I heard it from someone who lives in New Zealand at "Into the Wardrobe", a CS Lewis website. She frequents Narnia Web so maybe she heard it there. I'm sure Yahoo Entertainment will be reporting on it soon.

That was rather quick. If they take 12 months on touch up, the final product should be fairly refined. I hope it will be, in any case.

Wow I had not heard about this. That is awesome. I have not read those books since I was little! (I had a teacher in like 3rd grade who during the year read the whole series to us...awesome stuff)

One can only assume yes, but take it from a producer that post-filming work can often be a nightmare, and while a year sounds like plenty of time, editing the film alone can take months.

But I'm very excited about this as well. Apprehensive that one of my favorite book series is possibly at risk, but still very excited.

They're making a Narnia film? Really cool! I love that series. I have watched the old ones, and thought they were pretty good anyway.

It probably will take a year or so to perfect everything, cause from what I gather there will be a fair bit of CG, esp Aslan.

I very much hope that Aslan is portrayed in a fashion that properly portrays the majesty he should possess, yet keeps in mind that "he is not a tame lion." Past versions have done moderately well or badly, but I would hope that producers would use special effects when they could actually do a difficult passage justice (I have in mind the Voice of Saruman... they didn't even try).

Actually Aslan's going to be voiced by Eddie Murphy.

Sigh.

And it had such potential. I actually got a sick feeling in my stomach when I heard that news. Sigh.

By the way, I'm only joking.

Brian Cox (Hannibal Lector in "Manhunter", Badguy in "XMen2", Suicidal Horse-farmer in "The Ring") is going to make the voice of Aslan. He might just do a good job.

I just hope the movie doesn't try to dumb down or eliminate the religious symbolism of the books. I didn't get to read the series until I was an adult, but I was pretty impressed with what I read. It takes real talent to take deep truths and make them understandible for children.

According to Narnia Web it won't dumb down or eliminate the Christian themes because C.S. Lewis' nephew is helping with it and it wouldn't be true to C.S. Lewis' vision if they were removed.

Not to be nitpicking, but it's Douglas Gresham, CS Lewis' Stepson, not nephew. :).

That's good, though I thought I heard that some of his relatives wanted to remove Christian references from the series. Maybe that news got garbled in the transmission?

I certainly hope not... we should pray that that doesn't happen! The strong religious symbolism in the books / movie will be awesome for reaching out to the younger generations.

Most of the casting looks pretty good from the photos; hopefully this production will be better done than the past attempts.

Are there plans for the other books?

I'll field that, simply because it has been asked in another thread. The rights were bought for all the movies, but there are no specific production plans for anything but the first of them. Presumably this means they are waiting to determine how successful the first movie will be before committing to anything.

They've written up most of the Prince Caspian script according to NarniaWeb but other than that... who knows.

There were rumours going around that they could attempt to combine two of the books together to make a movie. However, I don't see how that could work right in most cases, if the previous BBC production of Prince Caspian & The Voyage of the Dawn Treadar is any example.

But generally speaking, they are waiting to see how well the first movie goes. And, yeah, they are working on a Prince Caspian script in case they do get the go ahead for a second movie.

So the rumor that they weren't doing #5 and #6 (Horse and His Boy and The Magician's Nephew) were just rumors? Well, I'm glad they are going in the order it was made, anyhow... I mean, it's absolutely ludicrous to put Magician's nephew first... It removes the feeling of being thrown into a foreign world when you read LWW.

With many of us practically being raised on this series, there is tons of anticipation and definitely expectations. Especially since there is such a strong Christian audience. I hope that everything turns out well, message-wise, with the film. Christian allegory should pass, because it can be veiled, and I would think it is safe, because to discard the Christian elements would be to change the story line. I hope it never comes to this.

The director from Shrek (Andrew Adamson) is signed on to direct the film, Disney is the production house, though I would have liked to see Dreamworks take the helm with this project being they aren't to skittish around bibically themed childrens projects (Prince of Egypt, Joseph), there was a recent interview with the director about what he had planned for C.O.N. in the "Series Of Unfortunate Events" offical magazine, he said the movie was going to be very real, and set in World War II, so the children would have to cope with the war as well as be transformed into the magical world of Narnia. Adamson also said that Aslan was going to be a photorealistic CG lion, but details as to if he would talk or if they were going to pull off what people had done with animals (Never Ending Story, the main Wolf villan towards he end) where they just gestured with movements of the mouth instead of having them pronounce each word has yet to be disclosed. However from the looks of it, it's going to be a very realistic take on Narnia, and nothing of the heavy christian symbolism as to being an issue or if it will be included or discluded as been addressed. This is all I got for now.....I'll try to update you guys later on with whatever else I find, I'm keeping a hawkeye on this project though, being I'm very protective of it personally.

God Bless,
Archan
