How to get over yourself?
Well that is a toughy....
hmm... Well I gues first you need to realize that there is a big world out there that isn't fair. Trying to help one another may be a good way to start. I'm not saying you have to go out give money to poor or do a mass conversion. But it may be beneficial to step out of the box and help others. Realize that there are people in this world that really need the help. When you help others, something inside of you opens up inside. Help comfort people, help serve people (help people who are less fortunate than you) whatever. But if you feel guilty about giving money, time, service etc then don't. God doesn't want people to help because they feel obliagated to do so, Kant (a old philosopher) would say, we need to do things out of duty, not out of Inclination (doing it out of guilty or for fulfilment) but because it's the right thing to do. Try helping others besides yourself, it really does make a difference on how we view the world and ourselves.
(also refer to my prayer section towards the bottom, that may also help anwser your question about how to become less self-centered.)
Second: about the internet.
Well, get a hobby... I hate to be blunt but go out and see what the world has to offer. Sitting in front of the computer screen all day isn't living. Go out and be active, do arts, do whatever. Expand yourself. I remember being addicted to the internet long ago too, when I decided to give it up a bit, It was hard. But after a few days, it really wasn't that bad.
Thridly: REading the bible
No, you don't have to necessarily pick up the book and start reading for hours. No. If you go into it with that mindset then you will not get anything out of it. You need to step back, analyze yourself and do what you think is right. I would suggest, flip to any book and read one chapter with an open mind. Good books I would suggest are Matthew, Romans or
Psalms (a great inspirational book) and just read one chapter. God isn't going to force you to do what you don't want. We were created with a free will, we can either do so or not. Just take it step by step, there is no need to read one book per day. We wouldn't be able to concentrate and reflect on what we have just read. You don't have to read the bible front to back to be a good christian. But reading bits and pieces may help allow God to help mold you. Or perhaps try talking to a pastor or someone from a youth group. They may be able to relate to you. He can only help if your willing to let him. Heck, just talking about God or praying to God out of sincerity helps a lot. You don't have to read, but just in involved.
Who do you think God would rather help:
(I know God wants to help everyone, this is just an example)
Example1 : Someone =prays everyday asking God to help them stop drugs. Yet he just does it everyday carelessly and w/o second thought in expectatations God will intervene and help. They may pray everyday, but unless they actually put the effort in, God may not help. It's just someone praying everything for something they wont put forth effort.
Example 2: Someone prays everyday to help fight their porn addiction. This person tries his hardest to fight temptation. He prays for comfort and gives it his all. He is showing a GOd the willingness and sincerity to change.
The same may apply to you. I dont know you so excuse my assumptions. If you do indeed pray everyday, do you really try to make an attempt to change yourself or are you just praying just to pray w/ hopes of works being done? Also, don't only pray for yourself but for others. Gods gives us an outline on how to pray.
Matthew 6:9-14
“ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins."
See, you pray for yourself, our enemies, our friends etc. We are also to forgive our enemies, friends, debts etc.... Prayer isn't only about you and your personal needs but for everyone. By praying for everyone, your not focusuing primarily on yourself. You become less concerned about "you," and start caring for the people around you.
Like I said before, God is not going to force you to do anything, but he can only work with you if you are willing to let him. BUt like I said, a good starting point is to start praying for people other than yourself. Hope this may anwser your question, if not, sorry.
Edit: Sorry for the unorderly structure of this outline. And my apologies to the mods for the massive string of edits
