Latin Addicts??

I have a Latin Vulgate Bible if that tells you anything. I know of a few other Latin speakers on the board. I have been known to make very corny Latin jokes from time to time. I'm also kicking myself now because I missed a chance to go to a Latin mass last night.

Can't say so, I only know a few words... Though I know of a few that are addicts, including one staff member. It's only a matter of time before she picks up on this one...

im in latin 2 at school, and the only reason im not failing is becasue my latin teacher is SUPER lenient

Seriously though, yes I'm really into Latin. I took all 4 years of it in high school, on top of participating a lot with the club (secretary, president, chairwoman to a state board, convention coordinator). I'm really much more of a vocab person than I am on grammar. I'm horrible with endings.

Sorry, off-topic. I was going to say...I've studied a little bit of Latin and Greek, but I can't really do much more than pick out a few words at this point.

I'm the exact opposite. I don't have a huge vocabulary, but I know the grammar really well. I guess that's why they make dictionaries.

Anyway, I took three years of Latin in high school and really wish I would have taken the fourth year, but that was a really long time ago. I've never been good at learning vocabulary in a second language (either Latin or Japanese or Spanish, I've tried all three), but I am good at grammar - I think it's the math in me. Somehow, I've developed a very strong English vocabulary and that helped a lot in Latin in HS - or did Latin help the English vocab?

Anyway, I only really remember first declension nouns now and a little bit on second. Vocab is really hard for me.

That was the first Latin I learnt when I was 11 (I'm 21 now). I wish I stuck with Latin and did it for GCSE instead of Art (I failed it. Obviously the examiner wasn't a manga fan!)

Strange though that I still remember the basics pretty well. I did have a good teacher though...

Latin really ended up helping me a lot, even being out of it now. Anatomy and Phsyiology was a lot easier to handle knowing all the latin stems, my english class suddenly made sense because I understood now what a direct object and indirect object was, etc., and my vocabularly was greatly increased because suddenly I could look at a word and think quite literally:
excruciating
ex- out of
Crux- cross
Oh! Out of the cross.

Or absent:
ab- away from
sent, sunt, sum- I am, they are
Oh! They are away!

Stuff like that. It was always very rewarding. I can still say the pledge of allegiance, which makes my family impressed and my fellow students write me off as a total geek. XD

You mean you can say it in Latin, right? 'Cause just knowing the Pledge of Allegience in English isn't super difficult.

Ah, yes, Latin. *twitch* @_- Eighth period, five days a week. Only three days 'til Finals. *twitch* Second declension, masculine, accusative, plural ending: -os.
I'm not really so much addicted as I am haunted. XD
Yes, Latin is scary. We conjugate our nouns. Still, scariness aside, I've come to rather enjoy this language. It's kind of useful sometimes on English vocabulary tests.

So I'm curious, which system did you guys learn on? Wheelock's, Cambridge, or LFA (Latin For Americans)? I used LFA my first 3 years, but then our teacher changed to Wheelocks. I ended up buying my wheelocks book so I could have it for reference in the future.

I'm using LFA, as well. It's not so bad, but our teacher's book is several pages off from ours. It causes quite a bit of confusion.... *sigh* Poor lady... She's teaching three different subjects at once, and my Latin class is monster-sized. The Spanish class has all the fun.
