Old school computer games

Recently I ran into two old games that I really loved playing growing up.. One being Jezzball and the other named Commander Keen. I believe Jezzball was only made for windows 95 and keen was out when DOS was popular (Win 3.1 also). I was just a bit curious if anyone has ever heard or even played any one of these games? Also what other old school computer games do y'all remember?

Rofl - yes, I know I'm just 16 but I was a DOS user for a quite a while (my eldest brother was in a computer support job).

I vaguely remember all the different commands; C:\ ; DIR/P .... that's about it. Oh, yeah, and those crazy huge floppy disks. I loved Commander Keen. Didn't come accross Jezzball but another cool one was Crystal Caves and Cosmo's Cosmic Adventures (hmm... all begin with C...). Those Commander Keen games are classics. Can't remember how many came out but they were so much fun (I mean, you got to fly around on a pogo stick!).

Hmm... maybe I should find some of those old games and get into them. They were so much fun. It's amazing what people did with those old pixelated graphics.

i played jezzball, there are many clones you can download now, just search google for jezzball


i didnt play commander keen, but you can play this awesome game called "duke gnukem" its an opensource duke nukem sidescroller, its very fun

Yeah, I just downloaded jezzball yesterday, I love that game!
I remember both Crystal Caves and Duke nukem, they are classics. I remembering spending quite a lot of time on both of them. But yeah, I actually found a site where I can download all the Keens, looks like I'll be one busy beaver today . Guess I'll be searching for crystal caves and nukem today.

I actually own Commander Keen Goodbye Galaxy! (legally! I bought it), which is by far my favourite Keen, as well as legally registered versions of the original Duke Nukum (note different spelling) and Duke Nukem II, which is a very fun game.

I assume those of you who played DOOM II found id's homage to their own game (yes, id Software wrote Commander Keen), which amusingly, was within an homage to another of their games?

Shoot yeah! I saw the title of this thread and the first thing I thought of was Commander Keen. I love the CK games! I think I have all three of the original Duke Nukem games too. In my opinion, the old side-scrollers are better than the new "3D" series.

I may have to agree with you on that one. It's hard to replace a classic, classics indeed.

Commander Keen Goodbye Galaxy is one of my favorites too. By any chance would you know if it was the 2nd or 3rd one? Can't remember.

I actually do own Keen and Duke Nukum legally . Actually we bought it long time ago, and then we have just been transfered it from computer to computer... So yeah.

But kind of random. I think i may have found the Offical Duke Nukem site. Don't quote me on that though, I may be wrong. They are actually letting people download the game for free, so perhaps it's not illegal to download them.... Actually they also have Keen and Crystal Caves; tons of old games. But it says "Shareware version." So perhaps they are just demos.*shrugs*

Getting off the topic of first-person shooters...

I'm an old-school Epic and Sierra fan myself -- think King's Quest, Jazz Jackrabbit, Epic Pinball, Jill of the Jungle... (And Robert Allen wrote some pretty cool music for Epic's games, I'd say. )

Well, I guess the question would be for which computer. Mostly I see old DOS games here.

What about games for other older computers (not consoles) like the Apple II, the Commodore 64, or the 8-bit Atari series (400, 800, 1200, XE, etc.)? Or the Amiga or Atari ST?

I played Skyfox on the Commodore. I also played a weird little movie making game where you controlled sprites and moved them around the screen, and you could record motion paths for multiple sprites and they would play at the same time (which was cool back then). Unfortunately, I don't remember what it was called, but at the time it was great fun.

That could match with Movie Maker (nyuk nyuk nyuk), Turtle Toyland or Turtle Toyland Jr., among others, but those are the ones I think of immediately.

I have the original EA Skyfox "album" sitting next to my Commodore 128 on my desk.

Games I remember wearing out on the 64 were ones like M.U.L.E., Skyfox (me too), The Eidolon (a very impressive fractal-based 3-D game), Raid on Bungeling Bay, Kinetic Connection and Big Top Barney.

Two games that where also fun where both Nibbles and Gorrillas. Thanks Warrior for pointing those out, forgot about those. Pac man, well I was never really good that that one.

Edit: Also a few other games come to mind: Frogger, Tetris (still popular today) and Pong. I believe these titles where both for nintendo and computer, is that correct?

Nice Oregon Trail screen shot! We used to play that all the time during "computer time" back in the day. Everybody would always shoot 983 pounds of buffalo even though you could only carry like a hundred back to the wagon.

Yeah, I did too! That and a similar game called "Underground Railroad". But my favorite old-school computer game ever has to be "Scorched Earth". Simple, 2D turn-based strategy not unlike the gorilla game with the exploding bananas. But you got money by winning rounds and you could by defensive items like shields and parachutes (in case the ground gets blown out from under you) and all sorts of big crazy explosive weapons.

*sees Oregon Trail screenshot* Oh yeah!! That brings back memories. And Commander Keen GoodBye Galaxy was awesome...I remember a demo of it coming with a joystick I bought, but the demo included almost the entire game, it was great.

Anyone ever heard of an Apple IIe game called Below the Roots? That was neat game in it's day.

That was by Windham Classics, IIRC. It was also available for the C64, and I think I played around with it at a friend's house.

Ahh... Good 'ol Commander Keen. I remember when I used to sit on my dad's lap and press the spacebar to shoot whenever we needed to zap the enemies. Then there was Hocus Pocus... Gosh I wish I still had those old games. *Is almost getting teary*

Oregen Trail: Our school had nothing but Apples, so the version I remember looks a little different. The hunting parts had a FPS view that didn't move, and animals ran in front of you right into the sight. The trick was, you had really slow bullets, so you had to time the shot to match the deer, wolf, buffalo's pace.

Had Bubble Bobble for our IIc at home, as well as my favorite ancient computer game..
Battletech:Crecent Hawk's Inception. It is a cool RPG, with a good story and action, but the ending is a major letdown. There was a sequel, but I haven't found a version that I can get to work nowadays.
