Trying again (^_^;), I'm AnimeHeretic

Postby Arnobius » Fri Dec 03, 2004 3:23 pm

I'm the AnimeHeretic (not a comment against religion-- I'm a Catholic if anyone's interested). This is a handle I picked up from a flame. I said that some famous titles (Akira, Macross, Space Battleship Yamato, DragonballZ) weren't really that good. They called me an "anime heretic" and the name stuck.

I'm here looking to interact with people interested in both Christianity and anime. I tend to get it on both sides: One one side, people in other anime forums tend to attack people with moral concerns as "dumb-*** fundies." On the other, people in religious settings tend to think of anime as porn. I've actually been accused of corrupting kids for showing them things like Rurouni Kenshin etc. So where I am, it's a lonely life.

I prefer to watch comedies, only watch subbed versions and have been studying Japanese so I can go to the original material and get series not likely to get picked up here. Favorites include (anime): Urusei Yatsura, Kanon, Excel Saga, Azumanga Daioh. Manga I'm currently following are Negima, Exaxxion and Excel Saga. Favorite Live Action show is Shomuni.

hey, welcome!

Ah, a comedy fan! ^_^ I love comedies! Though I haven't really seen much in the anime area.
Well, I'm sure you'll fare better here than those other places. *wanders why people think Kenshin is so terrible* *doesn't find answer*

see ya around and enjoy your stay! And here's an eggnog milkshake that I made. Have no fear, it's not low fat! Ever had low fat eggnog? DON'T! ^_^ lol.

Most of my favorite comedies were manga (Love Hina, Negima etc).

As for Kenshin, I liked most of season 1, but I thought the Kyoto arc degenerated into DragonballZ and I lost patience with it, skipping season 3 altogether.

 Yeah, it did get annoying with all that talking, but some of the fights were pretty good. Unfortunately, the last few episodes were dumb.

Yeah. When you spend 4 episodes fighting one villain, it's become excessive. Season 1 was mostly good, except when they fought that group that had all the weird members. I really enjoyed the movie. Didn't like the OVA (they took out all the humor).

They tell me season 3 was OK, but I didn't want to spend any more money on it.

Greetings from your friendly neighborhood seminarian. I'm more into action titles myself but I like when the two mix together. Some action/comedies I like include:

Jubei-chan
The Irresponsible Captain Tylor
Rurouni Kenshin
Trigun
Ranma 1/2

I hope you enjoy the boards. Check out my sig if you're interested in a Catholic message board.

I must say that I've always found it odd when people here talk about other Christians thinking anime is evil or porn. Most of the people I know recognize it as any other genre of entertainment, having its good and bad sides.

A lot of people used to ask me if all anime was porn, but that hasn't happened in a few years. Maybe things are finally getting better!

For a while people used to tolerate it around me. Then a nephew of mine got caught on a hentai page. The thing was it was hentai fan-art of normal shows (either Sailor Moon or DBZ), so everyone panicked and presumed the fan-art was the norm for the series. Because I watched the stuff, I was presumed guilty and any attempts to tell them the difference between porn and normal was ignored because I "couldn't be objective."

The thing that saddens me the most is the kids (who weren't downloading hentai) in the area were forbidden to watch it any more. I find myself wondering just how many of them will grow up believing Christians are narrow minded bigots and walk away when they turn 18. All I can do is tell them that Christianity is not to blame for the parents attitude. Remembering we're called to honor our parents, I certainly can't go behind their backs.

Thanks. When I first logged on, there was some doubt in my mind as to whether I'd fit in here, but I think it looks like it's going to be a good place to hang out.

Yeah, I know the feeling. When I was in high school, I was afraid that anything that I saw that was anime-related would be denounced as porn by my mother. (Strangely enough, at that time I also started the Love Hina manga, which would very closely resemble the "japanese porn" she was paranoid about. I was torn between d/ling more volumes (it wasn't licensed then) or deleting them all together). But I don't worry about that anymore (though I still live with my parents) mostly because it's my DAD who has the more carnal, lowbrow taste in that family. Some of the movies he makes us watch are quantifiably more inappropriate than LH.

Oh yeah, hi.

Very similar to my experience. When I was showing anime to younger siblings, I'd base the content level on what normal stuff they watched. My parent's didn't like that and basically said "Do as I say, not as I do."
