And yet none of that has any relevance to the question at hand which is, how do you think that the Xbox console would have fared if Halo 1 and 2 were never released?

Rofl, so true Cbwing.
Dirty games aren't the issue here, XBox definitally has gotten popularity off of Halo and Halo 2, but I don't think it would be doing terrible without them, after all,
it holds the widest popularity in online gaming among PS2, gamecube, and itself.

Hard to say really.

Yes Halo 1 and 2 has help bring more fans over to the Xbox, but the what if game is something hard to get into, because you don't want the other if's are to the question.

Because we don't know if there would be another game that would have became candy to xbox gamers.

But that is the heart of the question; for it is quite likely that many people would not have been Xbox gamers to begin with if it wasn't for Halo 1/2.

Honestly, is there any other game that could be said to be synonymous with the system, and that has sold well enough to support it as a major contender with Sony and Nintendo? What else is there...Fable? Splinter Cell? ??? None of these have produced nearly the same amount of sales as Halo 1 and 2.

The only one that I can think of would be Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, but I know it didn't have same amount of sales as Halo, I think?

Really, that was the only game that really made me want to have a xbox, but I just slap myself silly about 50 times and saw how much money that I had and just give up on that idea.

I think the Halo games helped the Xbox get gamers to notice it, then it also has some great games that came after Halo: CE to keep gamers shelling out the moola.

And then Halo 2 came out. And God saw it, and behold, it was good. And there was much multiplayer.

The fact is Xbox would be in very bad shape without the Halo series. Xbox has very few outstanding exclusive games. KOTOR and Halo were availible on the PC after their debut on the Xbox, though it took 3 years with Halo. We have Gamecube with it's instantly recognizable names, reputation for quality and fun. We have PS2 with the largest installed base, biggest library of games, widest support, and more exclusive titles than Gamecube and Xbox combined. What does Xbox have to speak for themselves? The first and pretty much only series that comes to mind is...Halo, along with the very succesful Xbox Live subscription service. Not saying Xbox is a bad system by any means but the only reason it can even compete for second place is because of the Halo series and Live.

I can understand how you feel there; after all, I despise GTA. Once you get past the novelty of committing random acts of violence, you find a pretty lame game. The targeting system is especially atrocious, since aiming is cumbersome and there is no lock-on feature. If any series is overrated, it is GTA.

Of course I don't feel the same way about Halo. Halo 1 & 2 actually are quality games, especially in the multiplayer modes. The sequel added much to the complexity of the game, thus it is not an "FPS for newbies" (I saw what you originially wrote :P ). Still, I don't expect you to agree, as you are and have always been wedded to the Half-Life cult :eyeroll: . Since one of the major tenets of this group is that Halo is the devil, it is not surprising that you spend so much time bashing it without cause.

The underlying issue is that as videogames become more mainstream, there are going to be titles that become loathsome to hardcore gamers simply on the basis of their popularity with nontraditional gamers. Gaming has only recently become something more than an "underground" pastime in the eyes of society, and there are a lot of gamers who do not wish to see video games go fully mainstream. Halo and the Xbox are partially responsible for the inceasing popularity of videogames, although the PS2 would have to be the major factor simply in terms of sales.

If Halo 1/2 were never released, then games might not be viewed in quite the same way by society. Halo opened up the world of first-person shooters to a much wider audience; and contrary to what some people would like to believe, this popularity was not a fluke. Halo 1 & 2 are genuinely fun games. Although they don't include lots of clever puzzles (but then if I wanted a shooter that made you use your head, I would go with Metal Gear Solid), the game succeeds for the same reason that most popular games succeed: it is easy to learn, yet difficult to master.

To summarize, if Halo 1 & 2 were never released, then gaming in general might not be as popular as it is.

...Oh yeah, and whether or not Half-life 2 is a better game, I seriously doubt that I will ever hear my roommates ask me to play it instead of Halo 2 ;) .

While the subject isn't about this, I'll have to say that I disagree a bit... while the gameplay might not be to your liking, it is still a solid game once you've gotten past the committing sensless criminal acts. As a driving game it's top notch, up there with the original Driver, if not better. I've never been a big fan of the shooting portion of the game, it's still pretty good, and they made improvements with Vice City (though they also added some content that I would have been much happier without). GTA isn't everyone's cup of tea, but neither is Halo... but I'm getting off-track here.

I find it interesting that Half-Life 2 added things to it that Halo did... Halo gave FPS games a new mark to shoot for. It's gorgeous, spralling, quick-loading, fustratingly fun, and has depth of story. Halo went the way of a more realistic game rather than the "Hi, I'm a 5'8 guy of average build carring around 18 weapons and 500lbs of ammo" that games like Half-Life and Doom are so popular for (note: I still like those games as well ]To summarize, if Halo 1 & 2 were never released, then gaming in general might not be as popular as it is.

Something to consider.... Microsoft being the "buy our way to the top" kind of company they are, would have just bought another franchise to make their system look good... and MS really didn't have any way to know that Halo would be as great as what it was.

If Xbox didn't have Halo, they might have had Half-life 1.5 or something else. As is there are plenty of other great titles for the XBox, including Crimson Skies and the Mechwarrior game(s).

As for my buying, it was Halo that kinda helped sell the system, but so did the alternitives of some of the PC games I wanted to play (Morrowind was out, Deus Ex was in development, etc).... RCT3 and WoW are the only reasons I want to bother with a PC upgrade at all.

I'll put in my 2c.

The only attraction the Xbox has for me is Halo and mechassault, but there are plenty of mecha games for the PS2.

In a word I wouldn't have any real desire (that justifies 150 bucks) for an Xbox if not for Halo. Plus I am really not Microsofts friend right now :)

im never a microsoft fan..... they need to make better products (outlook express, IE) heck... free programs are better (mozilla, the GIMP, openoffice, etc)

okay, regarding the actual thread. Like madphib said, halo did help xbox sell, but even without it, it could of still sold.

I think the system would still be around and games like Fable, Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden would have to carry the flag more. The Xbox would certainly not be nipping at the heels of PS2 had it not been for Halo 2, no doubt.

The other thing the Xbox has going for it is the fact that it is the most powerful console. While that doesn't necessarily translate into super amazing games, it's probably the reason a lot of people went Xbox.
