my file icons are screwed up...

Postby ShiroiHikari » Sun Nov 21, 2004 11:31 am

have a close look at the attached image.

I just had some trouble with a CDRW drive recently, but what would that have to do with this? do I need to reinstall Windows? the icons won't correct themselves after a restart and changing them manually doesn't work either. ; ___ ;

very peculiar... is it the installers directory that has the icon issues? or the deskptop?

all directories. not all the files have messed up icons but most do, including .gif, .jpg and .rtf, which is really irritating since I use those file types all the time. :drool:

the problem with reformatting is I have no way to back anything up. ; _ ; the CDRW drive we tried to install would -not- work.

could this just be a registry problem? or...something? the other day I did get a weird Explorer crash that had something to do with "kernel32.dll".

Right click on your desktop and look at the "theme" settings. Sometimes you have to "remind" it about the current status. I'm not sure if it matters, but if your machine ever went into "safe mode" then you can reset this stuff.

Let us know what happnes, and we'll help you try and isolate it further.

I did go into safe mode last night.

going into the folder options -> file types and changing icons manually fixed some of them, but some icons won't fix. like the TrueType font icon. no matter what I change it to, it still comes out wrong in some way or other. it's like everything's all cross-referenced or something.

Try booting into safe mode again, and then boot back into normal mode.

Can you change the ones that didn't work before, now? Is it maybe trying to go into "Active Desktop" mode?

still won't change. as I scroll through the file types list, they correct themselves but only in that list, not in Explorer windows. also, the desktop icons are just fine.

for example, see the attachment.
