What type of system would you recomend for a 9 year old... as far as on-line experience too. I have a ps2 and my cousin has an xbox I'm not too sure what would be better. He's interested in RPGs but also in strategy games like Age of Mythology. any info would be appreciated, thank you

umm... if he's interested in RPing, I would go PS2,
unfortunatly for the little tyke, there arent that many online RPG games, but PS2 would have the most for sure, if any.

For me it's hard to say because many of the games in general that I know of are geared towards older gamers anyway. But heh, maybe his parents/guardians don't have a problem with him playing games like Grand Theft Auto

If you want a good online experience along with good RPG's, then I would definitely recommend the PS2. As far as things that might be suitable for a 9 year-old, you might want to try Monster Hunter, Champions of Norrath, and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. All of those are online RPG's that shouldn't have much objectionable content. As for offline RPGs, you have a huge selection with the PS2. Some of my current favorites are X-Men: Legends and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2.

PS2 is for RPGs. The only reason you'd want a cube (like me) is for the Nintendo exclusives.

Here's the story for each......

X-box = The X-box is a great system, but not really geared to the younger folk. Most of it's acclaimed games are rated M (Ninja Gaiden, Halo 1&2, Fable). It's an American, meaning it's main strengths are action, shooting, sports, and racing.

-Online = X-box Live, without a doubt is the best online console service available. Yet, you must shell out $50 per year to play online and broadband connected. Some games I recommend are: Mech Assault (Robot combat), Halo 2 (Sci-fi shooting), and Crimson Skies (flying).
-RPGs = If they also like Star Wars.... one of the best Star Wars games is on this system; Knights of the Old Republic (sequel coming next month). It's also one of the best RPGs on the system. Followed closely by Fable. Aside from that, the only other noteworthy RPG is Jade Empire, which isn't out.
-Strategy Games = The only two good ones are Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders and Full Spectrum Warrior. They are two games that earned their "M" rating.

PS2 =
The most popular system, with a less limited game genre choice.

-Online = What Cbwing said.
-RPGs = Like everyone says, there are more RPGs than you can sake a stick out. Not to mention the backward compatible with the original Playstation.
-Strategy Games = Front Mission 4 is about the only one I can think of.

Gamecube =
System for all-ages, but still it's not everyone's cup of tea. Depend if you currently like Nintendo or not.

-Online =
Forget it.
-RPGs = Only four games I can think of at the moment that are really worth the money. Tales of Symphonia and Paper Mario 2, which are out. Baten Kaitos and Fire Emblem, when are coming out later.
-Strategy Games - Only Pikmin. Weird, but awesome game.

a 9 year old doesn't may not understand the concept of "online gaming"... anyway the nintendo gamecube is much more kid friendly, and more durable. Def gamecube

As much as I hate to admit it, I would have to say that the Gamecube is the best system for a child. Of course the PS2 has lots of kid-friendly games due to the sheer size of its gaming library, but the Gamecube has all of the familiar mascots that Nintendo has milked for years. However, if any adults are planning on playing the system, then I would not recommend a Gamecube.

Definately game cube, with child favorite games like Mario, Spyro, Sonic, Pokemon, and so many others... PS2 is, well, unless the kid is into RPG related games would be a choice. But still best to stick with a Cube.

Yeah, I'm really starting to realize that the Gamecube may not be for me. But I really want to experience Animal Crossing :sniffle:...

Animal Crossing is like the Sims. You do normal things everyday. BUT, in real time. That's what I love about it and it's what makes it interesting. It's extremely underrated.

gamecube for kids. i dont know if a nine-year-old is like resposable enough for online gaming, i mean like with the voice talking thing, you can give out a lot of info. i'd say gamecube. o yeah, and like most RPG's i've seen have been more targeted at the teen-adult range.

Just because the 'Cube is the most family friendly console dosn't mean that adults can't enjoy it too. I love the games I've got for mine, which admitidly isn't very many, and have huge wish list to get through, and I'm 28. For a nine year old, you will find more age appropriate and age enjoyable games on the Gamecube (but nothing online other than the Phantasy Star games)

PS Animal Crossing is one of the coolest games ever created. Yes there are some Sim-iliaries, but the surrealism of interacting with the different animals, looking for Jack on Halloween night, collecting fossils, trading with a racoon, and all the other wierd stuff make for a completely different experince, and one of several darn good reasons to own a 'Cube.
