May as well share a little about myself

Postby CDLviking » Sun Feb 22, 2004 2:42 pm

My name is Erik Everson and I was born Dec. 29th 1982. I was baptized and raised a practicing Catholic. Around my junior year of high school the Holy Spirit gave me a new zeal for the faith, and I began to learn more and conform my life to holiness. Around the same time I got into anime. One of the first things I saw was Ninja Scroll, and it left me shocked. Ever since then I have been searching for a place to reveiw anime before I watch it, because the back of the box just doesn't give you all the details.

With my new zeal for the faith brightly burning, I went to a private christian college studying pre-med. My entire family on my moms side has always had some kind of medical background. She is a nurse and the oldest of six, all of whom have at least worked in a hospital, another is also a nurse, and another is a doctor. I was pretty sure this is what I wanted to do with my life.

Halfway through my first year though, I felt a calling from God. I had felt the same calling my junior year when I first caught this new fire, but I hadn't really discerned it very much. I felt called to the priesthood. I called the vocation director for my diocese and started the application process which was very lengthy. The application itself was 25 pages long, then I had to write to essays and an autobiography. After that I went through a psychological evalution (no, I'm not crazy, that's just standard procedure), and a review board. Finally I got approval from the bishop, but by that time a new school year had started and I was involved in a ministry with high school juniors since that was the time that had most affected me. So I waited another year to enter seminary, and here I am now in Oregon a thousand miles from anywhere :shady: .

I'm doing my best to infect my fellow seminarians with a love for anime. A popular favorite seems to be Ranma 1/2. The insane comedy is a welcome relief from the costant philosophy we have to read. My own personal favorite is Now and Then, Here and There, which I plan to submit a review on. It is very intense, and not for everyone, but it has such a positive theme.

Some interesting things of note about myself: I study Shinkendo and Tae Kwon Do; I have a very large beard; I hate cats; and I take a stand for vegetable rights by only eating meat.

:thumb: Good for you! It's great to see someone taking a strong stand on such an important issue.

*whispers* You don't eat cat meat, do you? Oh, you must not... you said you hate them.

Thanks for sharing your story with us! I look forward to seeing your posts on the board.

Cat meat would probably be so vile that my entire gastro-intestinal tract would collapse.

Wow. Welcome to the board, and all the best in your studies too!
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

Thanks for letting us get to know you better! :)

It doesn't look like we have a lot in common as far as details go, but there is always the common ground of Christianity and anime. :thumb:

Just Crusader, without the X.

I don't post there often, but I stop by now and then. I thought the boards were gone for good for awhile there.

I'm not sure if it's spreading, but more anime lovers are coming out of the closet. There's about 5 guys on my floor that watch it, and a couple guys in the other dorm. We have a little trade ring going around. Having one of the bigger collections, it's usually me they're borrowing from.

That's kind of interesting about how you were going to go into the medical field. The pastor who was the last one I knew from the church I went to the longest was pre-med and lots of people said that he should go to seminary and be a pastor. Finally after getting his pre-med degree and before going to medical school, he realized they were right.

Why do you hate cats?

How did you get into anime?

I just don't like cats, they're lazy and have very little personality.

DBZ was my intro into anime. I owe most of my interest to my friend Dan for getting me hooked, Cowboy Bebop for expanding my horizons, and Now and Then, Here and There for being cool enough to inspire me to start collecting.

If it was just to have fun then I'd say Japan because I love the culture, and I have friends that have been there and loved it. Otherwise I'd say Rome, because it is the center of my Catholic faith, or Jerusalem to do a pilgrimage.

I'm not sure I really have an ethnic heritage. I'm an American mutt. I have bits and pieces of Iriquois, French, French Canadian, Irish, English, and Scandinavian. Of those, the greatest is ironicly Iriquois, though I don't claim connection to any tribe.

My mom's side of the family is almost entirely Catholic, with the exception of one uncle who goes to an Anglican church, or as Robin Williams would call it, "Catholic Lite." My dad is an athiest, and his wife (my parents are divorced) is the daughter of a Baptist pastor.

Not only have I lived in Arizona my whole life, but I've lived in the same house my whole life. I can see the hospital where I was born from my house. My parents and most of my family are from Detroit, so we used to spend the summer in Phoenix and go back there for Christmas, resulting in an extreme tolerance of temperatures on my part. :eh: Being at seminary is the longest I've ever been away from home.

I used to have a dog, but she got quite old, and my mom and brother put her to sleep. As soon as I'm out of seminary I plan on getting a great dane.

I'll take that to PM. Suffice to say here that we ask Mary and the saints to pray for us in the same way that we ask each other to pray for us here in the Prayers forum.
