Favourite Hymns/Worship Songs?

Postby Galant » Thu Sep 16, 2004 4:54 pm

Self-explanatory really.

Mine would have to be Charles Wesley's 'And Can It Be?'

If I may post the verses, the reason I love this hymn so much is that it meets anyone where they're at, no matter how low they may feel, and lifts them to the heights of God's triumphant children! It conveys its message in such beautiful and clear terms and focuses so much more on God's wonder than my own actions.

And can it be that I should gain an interest in the Saviour's blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain; for me, who Him to death pursued.
Amazing love! How can it be, that thou my God should die for me?

’Tis mystery all: the Immortal dies; who can explore His strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries to sound the depths of love divine.
’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore; let angel minds inquire no more.

He left His Father’s throne above. So free, so infinite His grace—
Emptied Himself of all but love, and bled for Adam’s helpless race.
’Tis mercy all, immense and free, for O my God, it found out me!

Long my imprisoned spirit lay, fast bound in sin and nature’s night.
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray. I woke, the dungeon flamed with light.
My chains fell off, my heart was free! I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine
Alive in Him, my living Head, and clothed in righteousness divine
Bold I approach the eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ my own.

Be blessed.

"How Great Thou Art!"

It always reminds me of what might be going on in a wild wolf's mind... =^_^=
Heart of Sword's Rhapsody

Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay
And all and all you're just another brick in the wall
Shoutin’ in the street gonna take on the world some day
But Bismallah will not let me go
Because I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
Bright eyes burning like fire
And exposing every weakness
However carefully hidden by the kids

Who will love a little Sparrow
Who's traveled far and cries for rest
Spare him his life from this monstrosity

I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all
And if the band youre in starts playing different tunes
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you!

And one of my favorites, too. Many older time hymns I prefer to some of the 'newer' stuff, as well as much of the old stuff we sing at our church. I've talked to the music director, but old habits are hard to break. I've always liked "Crown Him with Many Crowns" and "Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah", as well as many seasonal (Thanksgiving and Christmas) hymns. I don't hear them much any more. Pity.

I have many, mostly by "Planet Shakers" and "United Live"

But my favourite is probably a worship song by the Queensland rock band, "Rookie."

Jesus:

Amazing love sent to me
It's your blood that sets me free
And I can't begin to
express the way I feel.

Jesus
You gave it all for me

How could I ever repay
The debt that I owe you
You paid the price I should have paid
I've never known a love so true

Jesus
You gave it all for me

Lord you gave it all for me,
yet I'm so unworthy
Lord you gave it all for me
and now I do believe

Howdy Galant! Welcome to our little community! Hmm, my favorite hymn is "Be Thou My Vision." Oh, love that song.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I like both contemporary worship music and hymns, for different reasons.

My favorite contemporary worship songs:
Here I am to Worship (Sonicflood)
God is Watching Over You (Phil Joel)

Favorite hymns:
Onward Christian Soldiers
Victory In Jesus
How Great Thou Art
Silent Night (Christmas music)

Of course there are lots of hymns whose names escape me, but those are some of my favorites.

I love just about every hymn I've ever heard. I like many contemporary worship songs also, one of my favorites being... the last song on Micheal W. Smith's CD "Worship." I can't remember the name, but it is an awesome song.

Every Star Shall Sing A Carol
Once In Royal David's City
(insert all Christmas hymns here)
Redeemed
Morning Has Broken
My Jesus As Though Wilt
Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken
A Shelter in the Time of Storm
My Jesus I Love Thee

Most of these are on my favorites list because they're just as fun to play as they are to sing. ^_^ The first one I came across while flipping through one of my mom's hymn books. Very nice tune and equally nice lyrics. There are more, but I have a headache and it hurts to think. ^_^;

Be Thou My Vision- I can't really explain why I like it...it's just...I don't know...awesome

Before the King- So, so awesome. I don't know who does it though.
There are more that I like but I don't know their names.

I really like Here I am to worship. I have ever since this one time we were singing it at a church I used to go to, especially when we got to the part "I'll never know how much it cost/To see my sins upon that cross" and I was thinking about what the words of the song meant. That song really touches me on some deep level.

I love this country theme worship song called "Long black train" by Josh Turner

Lyrics to Long Black Train

There's a long black train
Coming down the line
Feeding off the souls that are lost and crying
Tails of sin only evil remains
Watch out brother for that long Black Train

Look to the heavens
You can look to the skies
You can find redemption
Staring back into your eyes
There is protection and there is
Peace the same burn in your ticket for that
Long Black Train

cause theres victory in the lord i say
Victory in the lord
Cling to the father and his holy name
And dont go riding on that long Black Train

Theres a engine there on that Long Black Train
Making you wonder if your ride is worth the pain
Hes just a waitin on your heart to say
Let me ride on that long black train

But u know theres victory in the lord i say
Victory in the lord
Cling to the father and his holy name
And dont go riding on that long Black Train

Well i can hear the whistle from a mile away
It sounds so good
But i must stay away
That train is a beauty making everybody stare
But its only destination is the middle of nowhere

But u know theres victory in the lord i say
Victory in the lord
Cling to the father and his holy name
And dont go riding on that long Black Train

I said cling to the father and his holy name
And dont go ridin on that black train
Yes watch out brother for that long black train
The devils a ridin that long black train.

omg I love those parts as well! My church somehow made certain lines in a differnet tone. Kinda like "backround voices". And at a youth convention, we were the only ones who did that! certianly attention grabbing! It ROCKED!

"Blessed is the name of the Lord"
"The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things... hey... the good things don't always soften the bad things; but vice-versa the bad things don't necessarily spoil the good things and make them unimportant." -11th Doctor

"The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who’ll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that’s almost never the case." - Chuck Close

Those are my 2 faves too! :) Mostly "Be Thou My Vision." It's a cry of the heart.

Be Thou My Vision

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me save that thou art
Thou my best thought by day or by night
Waking or sleeping thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom, thou my true word
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord
Thou my great Father, I thy true Son
Thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.

Be thou my battleshield, sword for the fight
Be thou my dignity, thou my delight
Thou my soul's shelter, thou my high tower
Raise thou me heavenward, O power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise
Thou mine inheritance, now and always
Thou and thou only, first in my heart
High King of heaven, my treasure thou art.

High King of heaven, my victory won
May I reach heaven's joys, bright heaven's sun
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my vision, O ruler of all.

There's another one -- not a traditional worship song or hymn, but it makes me cry every time I hear it, for some reason. It's "Calling Out Your Name" by Rich Mullins. I think it touches me because the main way I see God is through nature, and this song is all about that. I've never even seen the Prairie, but I can see it in my mind when I hear this song:

Well the moon moved past Nebraska
And spilled laughter on them cold Dakota Hills
And angels danced on Jacob's stairs
They danced on Jacob's stairs
There is this silence in the Badlands
And over Kansas the whole universe was stilled
By the whisper of a prayer
The whisper of a prayer

And the single hawk bursts into flight
And in the east the whole horizon is in flames
I feel thunder in the sky
I see the sky about to rain
And I hear the prairies calling out Your name

I can feel the earth tremble
Beneath the rumbling of the buffalo hooves
And the fury in the pheasant's wings
There's fury in a pheasant's wings
And it tells me the Lord is in His temple
And there is still a faith that can make the mountains move
And a love that can make the heavens ring
And I've seen love make heaven ring

Where the sacred rivers meet
Beneath the shadow of the Keeper of the Plains
I feel thunder in the sky
I see the sky about to rain
And I hear the prairies calling out Your name

From the place where morning gathers
You can look sometimes forever 'til you see
What time may never know
What time may never know
How the Lord takes by its corners this old world
And shakes us forward and shakes us free
To run wild with the hope
To run wild with the hope

The hope that this thirst will not last long
That it will soon drown in the song not sung in vain
And I feel the thunder in the sky
I see the sky about to rain
And I hear the prairies calling out Your name

I know this thirst will not last long
That it will soon drown in the song not sung in vain
I feel the thunder in the sky
I see the sky about to rain
And with the prairies I am calling out Your name

I feel the thunder in the sky
I see the sky about to rain
And with the prairies I am calling out Your name

I love "Blessed Redeemer."

Blessed Redeemer, Jesus is mine
Oh what a foretaste of glory divine...

I cry just thinking over the fact that our Lord is the foretaste of Glory. When we sit alone and pray, it is only a moment of His presence, a foretaste of what we will have one day. ^___^

I always cry when I sing "Amazing Grace." I can't make it through the song without crying. Also, "How Great Thou Art." I cry whenever I hear this.

And when I hear the chorus well, "Then sings my soul... my Savior God to thee..." that's where I always start crying. And I stop and listen to the words, choked up and unable to go on. The chorus just vibrates through my heart as I listen to the transcension of voices hit the church ceiling and then fall back down upon my ears. Whoa, what a song!

YOU SEE

You see into the deepest part of me ---

beyond the fog I hide behind.

You cast your light upon the shadows

that stretch like cobwebs in my mind.

You ease the pain when I am hurting,

and morbid visions from my past

pierce into the realm of Reason

as though I danced on blades of glass.

You grant me strength when I have fallen

and, once again, I've lost my way.

You take my hand in Yours and lead me

into the promise of a brand new day.

You bring order to all my chaos,

yet set my well-laid plans awry.

You place me on a firm foundation ---

then give me wings so I can fly.

You sand away my roughened edges

and polish all the dullest parts

until I stand before Your presence...

a newly-sculpted work of art.

You see into the heart within me,

right through my motives and selfish will.

And yet, in spite of all You see

You say You love me even still.

That one is great. On Christ the Solid Rock I stand is another good hymn. For non-hymn type songs I really like Blessed be the name of the Lord, the Happy Song that delirious does and Undignified from David Crowder Band... the last two because they did them at youth stuff and a worship thing at my college and everyone was so into just worshipping God it was really neat to see Godly joy in so many young people lol.

Does the first verse go like this, " Mine eyes have seen the coming of the glory of the Lord. He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored. He has loosed the fearful lightning of his terrible swift sword. His truth is marching on." If so, then it is The Battle Hymn of the Republic.
