Trigun (Review #1)

TITLE: Trigun
Type: Western
NUMBER OF EPISODES: 26 in TV series.

STORY SYNOPSIS:
Story begins with the destruction of a city named July...which was completely destroyed by one man, Vash the Stampede. No one died, but now Vash has a bounty hanging over his head worth $60,000,000,000! Well, many years later we meet two wonderful characters, Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson whom work for the Berndelli Insurance Agency. The Agency sends these two to go find Vash and stop him from causing any more damage. Whom they find though is the last person they expected to be the man whom destroyed July. This red coat wearing goofy cannot be the legendary Vash...can he? Well, a battle soon follows between Vash, and two bounty hunters which reveals his true potental. He then sticks around the two insurace agents because they still don't believe he's Vash!!!!
The rest of the story is rather fun but soon develops a more serious plot line as we find out that Vash is actually looking for a murderer named Knives, whom he plans to stop for good because of the horrible things he did in the past. Also me meet another character.....Wolfwood, whom is dedicated to protecting the innocent just as Vash is. He's a priest too.....uh, so to speak ^^;;;; And also theres Rem, the woman who taught Vash to be the way he is.

MY TAKE:
This show is a riot. Especially the first episode. Also I luv Milly, she's just so clueless and luvable and dangerous with that chain gun of hers O.o Anyway this is a very nice anime....and it teaches a very good lesson of how valuble life itself is. I rather enjoyed this anime very much, and I highly reccomend it.

WARNINGS:
Intense gun fights.......and.....gun fights......and more gunfights ^^;;;;

CHRISTIAN SUBJECT MATTER:
Theres the fact that Wolfwood is a Minister....although he doesn't act like one (he smokes, swears, drinks) there is a wonderful scene where he asks for forgivness that is very touching indeed.

RATING: 5/5

ALSO RECOMENDED:
Coyboy Bebop (For older viewers!)
Outlaw Star

You actually LIKE dubs? Now that's one of the strangest things I've ever heard. And one of the funniest!

If you get cable, there's a dubbed version Monday-Friday at 1:00 AM on Cartoon Network. That's what I watch, although I really want the subbed box set sometime.

Well, I've never seen a single episode of Trigun.
However, after seeing everyone rave about it around here, I'm obliged to now. I must see this!

Oh I loved the dubbed! It was really, really good...the man playing Vash (Johnny Yong Bosch) does an excellent job.

Two things I want to add:

First of all, someone mentioned downloading episodes. Unless you paid for them, this is stealing just as much as walking into an anime shop and shoplifting it from the shelves would be. Either watch it on TV, pay for it, or at the very least borrow it from a friend.

Secondly, I did want to mention something that's a little different between the manga and the anime. There are *many* differences, most of which are mere plot differences and would be inconsequential in the sense of what the review would be concerned with-but in Trigun Maximum 5, it's potentially hinted that Wolfwood was um, "involved" with Midvalley before he left the Gung Ho Guns (which would make him bisexual) although the relationship did end badly for some reason (according to what I heard), and in the manga, there is also a GHG member that is male but dresses as female (Elendira the Crimsonnail).

(I get my information on the manga second-hand: I don't own it and I can't read Japanese LOL.)

Those are basically the only two points SO FAR that would make the manga more potentially objectionable than the anime (though I personally still plan to read the manga).

In the anime though, Wolfwood is definitely straight, and in both the anime and manga, his relationship with Vash is a totally platonic friendship and not in any way sexual. (I thought I'd better say this with some of the um, "overly imaginative" yaoi sites out there.)

And yes, she's right October. I don't know if my brother told you, but we have the entire series on tape...you can just borrow that sometime instead.

Call me whatever you want, LOL.

Anyway, I added some things for accuracy's sake to my previous post and I'll provide some sources for the information if you want it.

Anyway, if anyone wants to see something really kawaii look at my attachment. Someone posted it to a site and my friend Mari (Ichigo) from Anime Angels sent it to me. If I got the right file to attach, it should be a chibi fan drawing of Wolfwood from a site.

Trigun is definately a series worth watching!

I was quite hesitant about watching it. I'm not really into the whole "shoot 'em up" genre. However, after watching one episode I was quite frankly hooked!

Surprisingly, I liked the dub! I think the dubbers did a genuinely good job! However, that doesn't mean I'm not interested in eventually seeing the original. (^.^)

Cartoon Network did alright in their anime choice on this one...

It's on at midnight for us, Annette. Used to be eleven, but they swapped it out into the later time slot.

I liked Trigun quite alot. I only watched the subbed version for the first 3 episodes, then I switched the dvd over to English. (Later on I'll post my comments about subbed vs dubbed) I didn't even know there was a manga. I should have just assumed I guess, but it never crossed my mind. Although Trigun held my rapt attention until the very end, it doesn't have any repeat value for me. But I'll always remember the characters and use and recognize certain quotes and examples from the anime.

The manga existed before the anime, and it's what the anime is based on, although there are some big plot differences (which I'm not revealing since this board has no way to hide spoilers yet and these plot differences are some major spoilers for the later episodes of the anime. If djnoz includes a way to hide spoilers I'm posting these differences)

By the way, the Trigun manga has finally been licensed in the US for English translation by Dark Horse Comics. The first volume is out this November for $14.99. -^.^- :jump:

I just ran into this thread again, and the bad part of downloading from the internet just hit me. It's not that I think I'll get caught and arrested, it's just kind of unethical and unfair. Sadly, I just downloaded the whole series. Isn't that ironic? I would stay up and watch em, but mum is always suspicous. :bang:

btw....Not October! Not October! It's Spencer! Spencer! Just clearing that up...

Awwwwwwwwww:hug:

Sorry about that. . .

Edited offer, I see you live in Texas. Too bad, if you lived near me, I would have loaned you my tapes of the TV dub, but I don't trust the US postal system much (they've lost stuff before) so I can't loan mine to you. :hits_self

Haha, actually, I live nowhere near California. I live in Texas. The reason Ashley offered to let me borrow her tapes or dvds or whatever is because I am good friends with her brother (Who i am coincedentally on the phone with now)

Thanks for the offer, though.

anime

Postby *Hope* » Wed Jun 11, 2003 3:26 pm

No, not an anime section, it has like a video section, but they have a lot of anime in it, like blue seed, cowboy beebop and the likes. The computer search thingie shows what the surrounding libraries have too so if our library doesn't have i can order it.

Mine has a video section too, but I've never checked it out to see if they had anime. Probably won't either just yet: I'm a closet fan due to not knowing how my family would react to my liking anime as much as I do. . .

Though I haven't ever watched Trigun, I feel obligated to give it a shot now.

I have a question though. Outside of what Ashley has already told us, what is the anime's treatment of religion? Ever single poster I see for Trigun has crosses on it. Are those all graves?

Most of the crosses are indeed graves. My own review (posted as Trigun #2) went into the religion thing too...Wolfwood does poke a bit of fun at some aspects of religion--like coffessionals--but it's never truly mocking or offensive (this could be because I'm a protestant and it doesn't effect me as much). It would be one thing I suppose if Wolfwood was truly a horrible person, but he's really more of a good guy doing desperate things. A good example, I guess, of how no one's perfect even those called by God. Overall I'd say the treatement is alot better than most other anime, especially Evangelion IMO.

The crosses may be graves. however, if it's a single cross being held by a dark-haired guy and it's almost as tall as he is, it's most likely
Wolfwood s weapon.
