Just got a cool job offer! But unsure...

Postby Golden_Griff » Thu Sep 02, 2004 2:11 pm

...if I should take it. Okay lemme explain.

I just got a call from my academic advisor telling me about a lady who works for a newspaper which (I think) is the newspaper for the school. The lady asked my advisor if she knew anyone that could draw comics for the paper. And my advisor said that I was the first person she thought about.

So I was very honored that my advisor considered me as the person who has the potential to do the job.

BUT, although it sounds like a neat thing to get involved with, I'm not sure if I should take it. I mainly say so because...I don't know if I got what it takes for sure. What I mean by that is will they be impressed with my work? Even if my school doesn't have a program that fosters skills in animation of any kind, and even if drawing cartoons is my first love anyway, I sorta kinda feel like I haven't mastered art enough to take on something that will be distributed to the public.

I don't even know what all is involved when making a comic for a newspaper. I mean, will I be the one to make the entire thing myself? Or am I just doing the actually artwork as part of a team? Seriously, I have no idea what's involved.

Maybe I'm overthinking it, maybe I'm just worrying too much over what I am or am not capable of. I went ahead and told my advisor that I'm interested (which could turn into "I'll do it!") but...I dunno...

As soon as I got off the phone, I sat down and prayed to God to help me determine whether to take up on this offer or let it pass. And if I do decide to take it (which I probably will) I asked for Him to help me with whatever I am needed to do.

Like I said, I've prayed about it, but I would like to make a small request for anyone who cares to pray that God will show me what He thinks about the situation.

I know I made a recent appearance in the prayer room, so I really appreciate it if you decide to remember me in your prayers again tonight

Thanks guys.

Of course I'll pray for you! (And don't worry about "appearances" here, it's nice to have others to pray for.)

A bit of advice: drawing a comic regularly would be able to sharpen your skills. Practice makes perfect. I really think you should take it! *~_~* *hugs*

Don't seat the talent angle. I mean have you seen the paper recently? Relax and keep it simple if you decide to go with the job. You'll do fine.

As a person who has been immersed in journalistic settings since high school, I know that you can't be sure you're good at something until you submit it -- whether that be articles, photos, or, in your case, comics. I think you should ask some questions to the people in charge and definitely try it out -- believe me, I wish we had someone to draw comics for my newspaper at UVa-Wise!

I'll pray for you.

This is a good chance for you to practice drawing for an audience. I'd go for it Griff.:thumb:

Well, I have made a few complete comics when I was younger (middle school/early highschool days). But that doesn't mean I knew what I was doing as far as how a comic is constructed. Yeah I had the thought bubbles and speech bubbles but I never really knew how to indicate who's the first speaker or how to indicate that a person is talking offstage. :?:

It's been a while, but I do have a little bit of experience.

Actually I don't read any part of the paper so I don't get normal exposure to comics. But I do know that they can be very simplified  But will my comics make people smile or go "bleh" :shady: ?

I agree on that :thumb:

Yes, I think I will give it a shot :) I could study some comics to get a better idea of how it works in the meantime. Thanks for you're prayers and words of encouragement everyone :thumb:
