and when I put a game in it "reads the disk" for several seconds then it gives me "Disk read error" or something to that effect. THe warrented was over a long time ago. Any ideas as to waht could be wrong? Perhaps the lens might be dirty?

The lense being dirty is most probably the case. The lense being broken might also be the problem. There are tutorials online about how to clean your lense, but to start out with I'd just use a normal CD cleaning kit.

it doesn't make a grinding sound does it? if it does then it's probably one of those glitchy PS2s...we ended up with one of those and had to take it back.

This is a known issue with PS2's has happened twice with mine which is a first generation one. Complain enough to the tech support people and you'll be able to ship it to them for no cost on the repairs of course. Or look up a tutorial on how to crack the thing open and clean the lenses.

yeah... Sorry to say, buying a used PS2 is a very bad idea... If people are selling now, it's likely so they can ditch a lemon and get the better model. Then again, this applies to X-boxes and gamecubes too...

Yeah. Disc reading problems are common among PS2s, although I haven't heard that they're as widespread with Gamecube and Xbox. As was said earlier, there are numerous online tutorials that will show you how to open up your PS2 and clean the lens. I have also heard that the lens being moved slightly to the side could cause the problem too. I'm pretty sure there would be tutorials for that too, if that's the case.

Heh, I took it apart and cleaned the lense. It didn't lay a cleaning. disk. To do that, it needs to be able to read it first. The guy who sold was selling everything he could, along with his family to recieve less time in prison, so I think that it worked for him.

And it still doesn't work. Only now, it takes longer to read the disk before the error message comes up.

I had the exact same problem until a few months ago, when I found out that Sony will fix this problem for free.

Here is the FAQ with all of the info you need to take advantage of Sony's free repair offer:

Note: Thanks to Volt, who originally pointed me to this extremely helpful FAQ, which I am now passing on to you :) .
